1. French Cinema Club

Short description of tasks:
The pupils attended whenever possible to
watch French films with English subtitles.
Aims and Objectives:
• Learn about French culture;
• Appreciate the importance of language
learning;
• Associate more fun with learning French

2. Relevance to CfE capacities
This project helped students to:
- Realise the importance of language learning: the students saw it was
interesting for them to learn a new language because they could
discover a whole new culture, especially as a cinema lover, since
French cinema is very diverse and produces quality pieces.
- Become more confident in their capacities: students recognised that
even if their French was not the best, they could still follow the story
with context and transparent words, or help themselves with the
English subtitles, and even learn new vocabulary thanks to it.
- Learn more about French culture: students discovered an aspect of
France that they didn’t get to see in class and learned that French
could be fun too.

Watching French films has improved my knowledge of not just
culture, but also the language, as it required me to listen in order
to understand a lot of things. I really enjoyed watching the films,
especially ‘Eyes without a Face’ as it is a classic of the horror
genre. I am confident that one day I will be able to watch French
films without English subtitles, which is great, because it is
possibly the best way to learn the language!

In her year here Agathe ran a film club for S5/6 pupils. This gave
the pupils an opportunity to watch films in French and also to see
films they might not have otherwise been able to watch,
enhancing not only their language skills but their cultural
awareness of France as well.
