3. Hon Charlie Lynn MLC
Importance of the 10 Terminal Buildings
The Trust’s own Comprehensive Management Plan
● Classifies them as “rare & exceptional” and says
● “Original World War 2 buildings should not be demolished but be adaptively
re-used for uses compatible with their original and community uses”
4. Tim James
Howard and Abbott’s Vision
Tony Abbott said the principles I have attempted to uphold ..
● that all bushland must be protected forever;
● that there should be no large scale commercial development;
● that heritage buildings should be protected and restored;
7. The Proposed Development: Key Points
■ The proposed development involves the majority
demolition of the “exceptionally rare” * 10 Terminal
complex and replaced with a large 2 storey out of
context with others in the area
■ Estimate about 75% will be demolished (all internal
walls, most windows, ceilings and most of the roofs)
■ Increased footprint of buildings
■ The proponent claims that this is adaptive re-use!
■ It will still require an amendment to the Trust’s
Management Plan and the Minister’s approval under
SHFT Act
* Rated by Trust’s own Conservation Management Plan.
8. More Key Points
■ A narrow walkway has been provided for ‘public access’
between buildings but private secure gardens will be
fenced off
■ Ambulance drive through, access roads & loading dock
■ A heat shield (firewall for bushfire protection) 150
metres long with heights from 2 to over 3 metres, in
the form of landscaped ‘berms’
■ Loss of public parkland for buildings and car spaces
■ Wrong place for a large aged care home with 89 beds
in an isolated bushfire prone area with single road
access & no services
