2. What is Broadband?
As per DOT:
Broadband is an “An always-on data
connection that is able to support
interactive services, and has the capability
of minimum download speed of 256 kbps”
Note: This definition for throughput may
undergo upward changes in the future.
3. Existing Internet Service
Categorized as Narrowband Service:
Dial up Internet Service (PSTN + ISDN)
Direct Internet Access Service (DIAS)
Internet Leased Line Service
5. Wire line & Wire less
3G Mobile
DSL (Digital Sub’s Wi-Fi (Wireless
Fidelity) ,
Line)
Wi-max (World wide
Cable Modem interoperability for
Optical Fibre microwave access)
Technologies LMDS (Local multi
PON, FTTH, FTTB, point distribution
system.)
FTTC
MMDS
PLC (Power Line FSO (Free Space
Communication) Optics)
Satellite
6. DSL Technology
DSL may offer more than 100 times the network
performance of a traditional analog modem
DSL uses the same telephone line as traditional
modem
Provides simultaneous access to Web &
Telephone removing the need for a second
telephone line.
DSL remains always-on all the time
Customer no longer need to physically dial up
to the ISP to “log in to the internet”
On power failure, telephone line is still available
like a standard telephone line.
7. DSL Family
Tree
DSL
Symmetric DSL
Provide identical data rates upstream & downstream
Asymmetric DSL
Provide relatively lower rates upstream but higher rates
downstream
ADSL is upgraded as:
ADSL 2
ADSL 2+

10. Advantages of Broadband
Always on ( Not on shared media)
Fast (speed ranging from 256 kbps)
No disconnection
No additional access charge
Telephone and Data simultaneously
11. Multiplay Network Components
BNG – Broadband Network Gateway
RPR – Resilient Packet Ring
OC LAN – Other City Local Area Network
DSLAM – Digital Subscriber Line Access
Multiplexer
CPE –Customer Premises Equipment
14. Services available through Broadband
• High speed Internet Access: This is the always-on Internet
access service with speed ranging from 256 kbps to 24 Mbps.
• Bandwidth on Demand: This will facilitate customer to
change bandwidth as per his / her requirement. For example a
customer with 256 kbps can change to 1 Mbps during the
video Conferencing session.
• Multicasting: This is to provide video multicast services,
video-on-demand etc. for application in distance education,
telemedicine etc.
• Dial VPN Service: This service allows remote users to access
their private network securely over the NIB-II infrastructure.
15. Services on IPTV
• Live TV
– Broadcasted Programs; support for multicast video delivery.
• Time shifted TV
– Schedule less television;
– Allows current or previously broadcasted programs any time
• Near VoD (N-VOD)
– Channels are created, scheduled and run by the operator in staggered
manner.
– Staggered channels are played at certain delay from original channel.
– A subscriber purchases a “ticket” and can access all the channels
running the same movie in multicast. The channels are so phased that
by pressing “FF” or “RW” the subscirber can switch the channels and
skip number of minutes back or forth giving him a near VOD
experience.
17. Error 678
• This is most common problems.
