3. SDL As 21st century skill
SDL Listed as a key compenent of the
21st century skills.SDL is also intricately
linked to lifelong learning which has been
listed as demand for modern society by
international organizations such as
UNESCO and OECD.In short, self
direction as now recognized as an
important 21st century skill for our
learners.some important aspect in SDl :
-Ownership of learning
-self management
-self monitoring
-Extension of learning
4. Ownership of learning
The learner’s characteristics or personal
attributes are important to SDL,particulary
possessing personal responsibility in learning.
Brockett and hamstra (1991) argue that personal
responsibility is the cornerstone of SDL.Learners
who take personal responsibility in learning have
ownership of their learning set learning goals, and
accept the concequences of their thought and
actions.Developing sense of ownership of learning
is closely related to the motivation to learn.
5. Self Management
Brockeet and hiemstra(1991) view SDL as an
instructional procees of assessing learner’s
needs,identifying learning
resources,implementing learning activities
and evaluating learning outcomes.It focuses
on teaching learning transaction an
institutional setting that is almost to
individualised to instruction.It involved
negotiation between the learner’sand the
teacher about learning goals,methods of
learning,use the resource,and assesment of
outcomes.
6. Self Monitoring
Self monitoring focuses on both cognitive and
metacognitive aspect of learning,which are
internal to the learner’s.Cognitive
process(thinking,making meaning of
information,and integrating new knowledge into
existing knowledge structure) are necessary in
all learning process.Metacognition refers to
thinking about thinking or learning to
learn, which is related to learner’s ability to
reflect on their learning.
7. Extention Of Learning
In this learning process,
where a learner has total
control about the choice of
what the learn,how to
learn,and how to evaluate
learning.
9. Possible behavioral indicators of the
salient ascpect of sdl
Salient aspect of sdl
• Ownership of learning
Some possible behavioral
indicators
1.Student identify,determine and
articulate their own learning
goals.
2.Student identify learning tasks
to archieve the goals,student
chart their learning process
3.Student challenge themselves
and set the standards for the
archievement of their learning
goal.

• Management and
monitoring of own learning
Some possible behavioral
indicators
1.Students formulate a question
and generate relevant
inquiries
2.Students explore a range of
possibilities and make sound
desicions
3.Students self-plan and self-
manage their time
4.Students critically reflect on
their learning and initiate
gathering of feedback from
theachers and peers to
archieve their learning goal.

have learn to new contexts
2. Student utilise the skills that
they have acquired to learn

SDL is a process in which students take
the initiative to diagnose their learning
needs, formulate learning goals, identify
resources for learning, select and
implement learning strategies, and
evaluate learning outcomes.
