4. The role of Corps of Electronics & Mechanical Engineers
[EME] is to achieve and maintain the operational fitness of
electronic, mechanical, electrical and optical equipment of the
Indian Army. The Electronics and Mechanical Engineers who

5. The Corps is responsible for providing engineering support to
the army equipment ranging from light vehicles to tanks, guns,
missiles, radars, computers, helicopters, communication
equipment, night vision devices, simulators and so on during

in the sophistication, quantum and variety of military
hardware.
6. The Corps of Engineers consists of three major
constituents namely:
1.Combat Engineers
2.The Military Engineering Service (MES)
3.The Border Roads Organisation (BRO)
7. Combat Engineers:
In war, Combat Engineers provide mobility to own forces
by constructing bridges, tracks and helipads; on the
other hand the Corps denies the same to the enemy by
creating obstacles such as laying mine-fields and
demolition of bridges. The need for accurate survey arose
before combat engineering.
8. Military Engineer Services:
The Military Engineer Services, or the MES, are
responsible for the design, construction and
maintenance of all works, buildings, air fields, dock
installations, etc., together with accessory services
such as military roads, water and electricity supply,
drainage, refrigeration, furniture, required by the
Army.
9. Border Roads Organisation:
The Border Roads Organisation consists of Border Roads
Developement Board and GREF. GREF is headed by Lt General of
Corps of Engineers known as DGBR.BRO has made its own
contribution to the nation by constructing national highways,
airfields, buildings and bridges. The Border Roads, by constructing
a large number of roads in once inaccessible areas of
the Himalayas, Rajasthan and North East States have contributed
significantly to their economic development.
