MAJOR TANK GAUGING PARTS Radar level transmitter Temperature transmitter Tank side mointering Field communication unit Field bus modem Tank gauging HMI Interfacing with DCS 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 23
Radar level transmitter There are no of types of radar transmitters are used according to the application, they are as follows. Pro Parabolic Antenna Gauge. Pro Still-pipe Array Antenna Gauge. Pro Cone Antenna Gauge. Pro Still-pipe Antenna Gauge. Pro Process Seal Antenna Gauge. Pro Rod Antenna Gauge Tank Radar Rex 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 24
Radar level transmitter These measure the level either by PULSE or FREQUENCY method The type of gauge will depend on various factors such as. Noozle height. Medium. End connection details. Pressure, Temperature values. 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 25
Temperature transmitter There is also an temperature transmitter which measure the temperature of the tank. There are 2 provision for this , it may be single spot temp measurment and mulit spot temp measurment . The o/p from this transmitter will be a 4 to 20 ma hart config. 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 26
Tank side monitoring The main purpose of this tank side monitering is to receive various signals from the radar , temp transmitter…..and give a standard signal to the FCU(field communication unit) 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 27
Field communication unit The Field Communication Unit (FCU) is a data concentrator that continuously polls data from field devices such as Radar Tank Gauges, Data Acquisition Units and Remote Display Units and stores them in a buffer memory. Whenever a request for data is received, the FCU can immediately send data from a group of tanks from the updated buffer memory . The FCU acts as a slave on the group bus and as a master on the field bus. The unit has six communication ports. The ports can be individually configured as either group bus ports or as field bus ports according to one of the alternatives below: 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 28
Field communication unit An interface board can be connected for each communication port. These boards can be either FCM boards for the TRL/2 Bus or FCI boards forRS-485 communication. Two group bus ports canal so be configured as RS-232 by connecting a jumper connector instead of an FCM or FCI board . As standard the Field Communication Unit is delivered with six FCM boards and two RS-232jumper connectors. 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 29
Tank gauging HMI HMI plays an important role in tank gauging because all the inventory calculations are seen there.. 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 30
Field bus modem BENEFITS • Increases the possible distance between a FCU and TankMaster PC • Diagnostic LEDs on front cover • Enables multidrop - one TankMaster can serve many FCUs via the FBM 2180 • Multiple mounting options • Enables FCU redundancy 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 31
OVERFILL PROTECTION The measurement of the level for overfill protection is independent of other gauging systems installed on the tank. High and high-high level alarms that can bee seen or heard by the operator controlling the tank transfer, such as audible sirens or horns and visual lights. A device that when activated can automatically trigger a shut down procedure for the process causing the alarm. 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 32
ore stringent regulations may be required for facilities with: Permeable ground materials that are inside the containment area "Old" tanks that can be more susceptible to corrosion. Tanks near surface water such as rivers, wetlands or lakes 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 33
Measuring for Overfill  Single point measurement  For single point measurement, an instrument is installed at the high and/or high-high level and will sense when the product reaches that level. The most common of which are simple stand alone mechanical switches or electronic tuning fork technology. Single point measurement devices tend to be simple, very reliable, low cost units that can be installed easily 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 34
continuous measurement For continuous measurement, a standard level gauge is a common solution. Any of the major gauging technologies can be used, float and tape (mechanical), servo, radar or magnetostrictive technologies. Each provides their own benefits based on the application. Continuous measurement is favored by some over single point measurement. Your operators can check the status of the gauge at any time and the gauge's operation can be monitored for deviation against the primary level device. The main benefit - you know if there is a problem with the gauge before it becomes an overfill problem and your operators do not need to climb a tank to check the operation. 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 35
Overfill protection 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 36

  • 33. ore stringent regulations may be required for facilities with: Permeable ground materials that are inside the containment area "Old" tanks that can be more susceptible to corrosion. Tanks near surface water such as rivers, wetlands or lakes 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 33
  • 35. continuous measurement For continuous measurement, a standard level gauge is a common solution.
  • 36. Overfill protection 8/12/2009 SARAVANA KUMAR B.T 36
