Lesson-01
Lord Krishna teaches Arjuna in this chapteras to how His
devotee sees the world with equal vision. He also explains
as to how a person can achieve peace in this world.
HOW DOES A KRISHNA CONSCIOUS PERSON SEE THE
WORLD?
He sees everyone with equal vision, because he identifies
everyone as a soul and not by their externals. He seessoul
not just in all the human beings but also in all the animals
and in all the living entities for that matter. Thus he never
commits unnecessary violence by harming them. Rather
he respects every living being as a part of Krishna. Then
what about non-living material things like stones? A
Krishna conscious person sees everything material—
whether it be pebbles, stones or gold—as the same. This
2. is because he knows that all these things ultimately come
from matter.
The pastimeof Purandardas
There is a nice story of a diamond merchant named
Purandardas who later becomes a very great devotee. He
was a very stingy diamond merchant very much attached
to his wealth. Later Lord Krishna Himself intervenes in
his life in a miraculous way and gives him so much mercy
that Purandarbecomes His devotee. He then spends all his
money for serving Krishna. He puts Tulasi leaf on his
diamonds and says: Krishnarpanam. This is all offered to
Krishna and then he himself becomes a beggar and goes
to Tirupati along with his wife. He accepts Vyasatirtha as
his spiritual master, who is also the spiritual master to the
king Krishnadevrai.
When Krishnadevrai sees Purandar das in Tirupati, he
becomes doubtful. “How come this stingy merchant has
become a devotee?” He tells his guru Vyasatirtha that this
must be Purandar’s new business trick, “I know this
fellow very well. When I used to go to him to purchase a
few diamonds, he would charge me even for the milk that
he would offer as hospitality. Let us test whether he is
genuine.” As they are discussing, Purandardas comes
there with a begging sack filled with grains. Immediately
he offers obeisances to his guru Vyasatirtha and his
godbrotherking Krishnadevrai. Taking this as
3. opportunity, Krishnadevrai puts handful of precious
diamonds in Purandar’ssack without his noticing it. Next
day, Krishnadevrai along with Vyasatirtha go to
Purandar’shut. Purandaris not at home, so his wife, who
is also a staunch devotee, receives both the guests. Wife
explains her schedulethat each day they would beg alms
and grains. Then they would feed guests and vaishnavas.
After that they would eat. Wife further explained, “But
yesterday, one sinful person put so many pebblesin my
husband’sgrain sack that I and my husband had to pick
them out. Krishnadeverai (surprised) asks, “Where are
those pebblesnow?” Purandar’s wife replies, “We threw
them in our backyard.”
Vyasatirtha and Krishnadevrai then actuallyfind the
diamonds lying on the ground at the back side of the
house. Purandar, who was a diamond merchant earlier,
can’t even tell difference between diamonds and pebbles
now. This is the glory of devotional service. King
Krishnadevrai appreciated Purandar’sdevotion to
Krishna.
MORAL: Because a devoteeis onlyinterestedin Krishna
consciousness, he considers all materiallyvaluablethings
as insignificant. This is to say that he does not have any
personalinterestin enjoyingany kind of matter. But of
course, if some material thingcould be used in Krishna’s
4. service,he is ready to utilizethat thingin Krishna’s
service.This is called “yukta vairagya”
