3. Why do we have an ePortfolio?
• Fostering Student Personal
Development Planning
- Led by Dr Barbara Lee (2008)
– Do students know what PDP is?
– Do we offer course specific PDP advice?
– Do we offer any generic PDP advice?
• So… if we give our students an online space to plan, collect and
organise their work & career ideas, will they become more aware
of PDP?

13. The brief:
• Students are requested to produce an
industry standard online CV portfolio
using the appropriate software.
• The online CV portfolio is prepared with
the intention that pages can be sent to
prospective employers to obtain freelance work, a period of
attachment, or a temporary or permanent position.
• Video and Radio links can also be embedded in Mahara if the
student would like to demonstrate these skills.
• The task: http://youtu.be/sjhA0XnULy8
14. Feedback: Journalism students 2011
• “I was shocked at how easy it was to use and to navigate (once I
got used to it of course!) and that it was so easy to put together
an online package.”
• “Because myPortfolio can be accessed on any computer with
an internet connection it enabled me to complete my work in the
comfort of my own home, without the added stress of having to
venture into the uni library and attempt to find a computer. ”
• “MyPortfolio is ideal for people completing media based courses
like myself. Its simple layout makes it user friendly and unlike
many computer programs it doesn’t require hours of training in
order to grasp the basics.”
This is just a bit of Solent’s background. We have 3 faculties that offer a range of courses – many of them can be considered as excellent options for those studying BTEC National Diplomas at college.FBSE: Faculty of Business, Sport and Enterprise (http://www.solent.ac.uk/about-us/faculties/fbse/fbse.aspx)Martech: Maritime and Technology (http://www.solent.ac.uk/about-us/faculties/martec/martec.aspx)FCIS: Faculty of Creative Industries and Society (http://www.solent.ac.uk/about-us/faculties/fcis/fcis.aspx)We have our usual cohort of 18-25 yr olds that make-up the vast number of full-time students but we also have the luxury of having many mature learners as well as part-time, blended and distance learners. We have seen a ‘Moodle Explosion’ this year (September 2011) with very unit and course having their own moodle page. Mahara too has seen an increased rise in usage – mainly just first years browsing the site and looking at each others pages.
For this project to work and to grow we all needed to work together.
They all need to link to each other – one of the main reasons for choosing Mahara!
Mahara link from Moodle – it’s single-sign-on so the students must be in Moodle first!

All Courses here at Solent have a page on Moodle. All course pages have a ‘Welcome Week’ block with a link to the Online CV unit.
