3. Postmodern Elements within GTA
• Nostalgia
• Eclecticism
• Bricolage
• Acts against Modernism
• Narcissistic
• An Active Audience
• Hyper-reality
• Parody
• Pastiche
4. How is GTA postmodern?
• GTA is postmodern through hyper reality as the game is almost
‘second life’ as the line between reality and hyper-reality has become
smaller almost emerging the two.
• The game is free roam which means that the player is free to make
there own decisions.
5. PARODY
• Grand Theft Auto includes parody through the features
that the game is set in New York. The city is known as
‘Liberty City’ within GTA. The statue of Liberty holds the
famous flame, however within the game it is holding a
Starbucks Coffee, this is seen as parody and pastiche,
this also includes the idea that Starbucks is taking over
the world as GTA is a global game.
6. BRICOLAGE
• The postmodern feature of bricolage is used within the video game
GTA as there is a narrative to the game but it is all jumbled and
doesn’t follow a certain structure or story, and there are different
missions which involve different people and it is the players game
whether to take part in them or not.
This can be seen as postmodern as the player is able to do what they
want and have no rules for example they are able to kill anyone thye
want, as this game has no boundary's.
7. Blurring of genres
• GTA is part adventure game, part role-play, part simulation, part
shooter, which is blurring the genres of video games.
• It is also blurring genres in terms of being a videogame- at times we
are fed cut scenes (short ‘film-like’ moment, giving us context) which
belong to film and tv genres/
8. intertextuality
• Liberty City- is based in New York City
• Vice City- is a counterpart to Miami
• San Andreas- is based on San Francisco
• Capital City- Based on Washington DC
• Los Santos- based on Los Angeles
• Use of brands, use of cars such as Ferrari, Jaguar, use of Apple Mac.
