The Apache tribe originated in the 17th century from the Alaskan region, Canada, and parts of the American Southwest. They consisted of six subtribes including the Western Apache and Chiricahua. The Apache Indians lived in tepees and wickiups, ate buffalo and other meats, and used hides for clothing. They called themselves "The People" and had traditions like Sunrise dancing. By 1970, around 1,500 Apache Indians were documented living in New Mexico.
