Sleaford in the UK was the first market town in the East Midlands to establish a Business Improvement District (BID). The BID allows local businesses to collectively fund projects to improve the local trading environment. Sleaford successfully applied for funding, consulted local businesses, and held a ballot in 2007 where a majority of businesses voted in favor of establishing the BID. Since then the Sleaford BID has implemented security patrols, commissioned a parking survey, and supported local events through additional funding provided by the businesses. There are now around 75 BIDs operating across England and Scotland.
