More and more people are now having to combine studying and work and nowadays. And I can
tell you from experience that it is tough to nd way ways on how to balance school and work.
I somehow managed to juggle my way through and I know that you too can do the same as well.
You just need to learn from my experience and other people’s experience.
There are several reasons as to why working people nd themselves having to study. In my case,
it was because as an Accountant I had to get a professional quali cation to increase the chances
of career progression.
I have however seen others combine the two because they did not have access to student loans
and had to work to pay their way through college.
Regardless of your reason for doing it you still have to nd ways of combining the two if you are
to be successful. Otherwise, if you are not careful one of the two may su er.
I have seen people who due to work are so exhausted in class that they end up sleeping
through the lectures. In some cases, one might nd that they cannot nd time to study or study
less and end up with low grades.

work.

1. Time Management Is Key
You need to decide beforehand the maximum amount of time you can spend on both. This has
to take into account the fact that you also need time to rest.
Further, if you are a family man or woman then you need to spare time for the family too. You
do not want a situation where your family su ers.
To avoid this you may need to involve your family in making this decision. While involving them
is necessary you also need to make sure that you keep your side of the bargain.
If you have promised your family that you will spend an hour with them every day then do so
unless there is good reason not to.
In scheduling your time make sure that you select the best time for each. For instance, if you
nd the morning to be the best time to study then you can schedule the morning as the time for
study.
I honestly found that early mornings were the best times for me to do my studying. I felt that my
brain was fresh and I could easily concentrate and absorb more.
This is, however, a personal decision and we are all di erent.
2. Go for online courses instead.
One thing that I like about online courses is the ability to watch recorded lectures if you miss
the live sessions.
When I was studying for my professional ACCA quali cation, I had beside the class lectures the
option to watch recorded lectures. This meant that I could easily miss classes sometimes and
still be able to watch that day’s lecture in my own spare time.
I would, therefore, advise anyone trying to balance work and study to seriously consider going
for online courses. Especially the ones that o er recorded lessons as it will lessen the burden of

Taking online courses mean that you don’t have to be at a certain place at a certain time to
attend your lectures. You just need access to a good internet connection and you are done.
Another advantage I found is that for the recorded lessons I had the option to rewind as many
times as I wanted. In a live lecture, there is a limit to what you can do if you miss something
during the lecture.
I honestly think that in the future most lessons will be o ered online. It cuts costs for
universities and increases the number of students they can enroll without having to worry
about accommodation and class buildings.
3. You need to be motivated.
In any endeavor in life, one has to be motivated to progress further. If there is no motivation you
end up just going through the motions.
I have heard of sports stars who lose motivation and therefore as a consequence the re in their
belly that pushed them to achieve more. Once that happens they just play because they have to
and end up not achieving much.
In trying to balance school and work one has to identify the things that are motivating them to
do it. It could be that you want to earn more money or just want to see some career progression.
Whatever that is, is what will push you through the di cult times that will surely come as you
work and study.

4. I personally remember leaving the o ce very tired and being tempted to miss some studying or
classes. What pushed me however was the goal that I had set to nish my studies and push for
a promotion at work.
4. Seek the assistance of friends and family.
It is tough to nd ways to balance school and work. One of the ways to balance the two is to seek
the assistance of friends and family.
This is especially true when you are a parent as you need assistance on childcare while you are
studying. This is where family and close friends come in as they could take care of your children
when you go to school.
They can also relieve you of childcare when you go to the library to study.
Family has been indispensable to me as I studied and I am grateful for their support.
They can also be there to o er support and encouragement during this time.
I remember there were days when I did not feel like studying but due to pressure and
encouragement from the family, I went ahead and studied. My success was their success too.
5. Discuss with your boss.
Another thing that will be of great help during this time is the involvement of your boss. You
need to inform your boss about your studies.
I discovered during my studies that the company I was working for had some schemes to
support sta that were studying. I would not have known this without discussing with my boss.

5. And because my boss knew that I was studying he allowed me sometimes to knock o early on
school days.
Discussing with your boss about your studies can also help him understand the stresses that
you are going through and he or she will be more understanding.
He will understand if you are struggling with work and may o er a hand.
6. Ask your boss to do work-related school
projects during working hours.
If you are attending a course that is related to your current job you can use the time at work to
collect information for work-related school projects.
For instance, if you are studying accountancy and you have a project on how companies do
budgeting you can ask your boss to do it during working hours.
You can during working time interview the people involved in budgeting and get all the
information that you need.
Your boss can also take advantage of your studies for someone to assess how they are doing
their work and o er tips for improvements.
It can be a win-win situation for both you and the company.
7. Avoid distractions.
I like watching soccer and struggled to study while knowing that my favorite team was on
television playing an important game.
While I managed to avoid watching soccer most of the time, I failed to keep my commitment at
other times.

6. When you have to combine school and work time is very limited and therefore some distractions
will have to be avoided. To me it was soccer but to you, it could something else.
I found that to avoid watching soccer I had to go to the library to study instead of studying at
home. I knew that if I studied at home I would not resist the temptation to switch on the
television.
For others, it may mean asking your wife to control the television remote control.
Time management is critical for anyone trying to nd ways on how to balance school and work.
8. Find time to rest.
When trying to balance school and work there is always a risk of burnout. This could be a very
stressful time and you need to take care of your health no matter what.
You, therefore, need to nd time to rest and recharge your batteries. When someone is tired
they start to lose focus and may not perform well in anything.
I remember going to class and be there only in body but not in spirit. Fatigue needs to be
tackled if you are to be successful.
To rest you can take a nap or go for a walk or whatever you nd refreshing.
9. Find study buddies.
Man is a social being and therefore bene ts by having someone doing the same thing so that
you can encourage each other.

I bene ted from a study buddy as we were able to discuss our dreams and aspirations and
discussed tips on studying.
I, therefore, know that you too can bene t by nding a study buddy.
10. Be willing to adjust your balance of
school and work.
A few years ago I read a quotation from a former Secretary-General of the United Nations who is
quoted to have said, “only fools don’t change their minds”.
As you are juggling school and work you may nd that it is impossible to have both at the same
time. In that case, be courageous enough to drop one.
There is no point in continuing to do something that is not working.
If you can drop work and concentrate on studies then do it.
I have also seen people who have suspended their studies and went on to work and save
enough money for their studies. Enough money to be able to come back and not have to work
during studies.
Another thing that could be a ected during this balancing act will be your household budget
