1. G321 Preliminary Task Evaluation
Name: Laura Fussey
In a group with: Amy Clarke and Callum Fisher
Write about the preliminary task. What were you asked to do? How did you
find each stage of the process?
For this task we were asked to create a short video that is made up of
consecutive scenes. Some of the media techniques that we had to use were
match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. To plan for this
task we had to write a short script between two people, after we created a
storybored that showed each camera shot that we were going to use, what
sound and dialogue would be heard and a brief description of the actors
needed to do along with a picture. We then filmed each of the separate
camera shot with the director in charge of the camera and all of the action
taking place. This was quite difficult because you had to make sure that the
actor did the same movements every time to make it easier to match the
action in editing. After filming when then had to edit our clips so that they
ran smoothly between each one.
Write the 3 techniques/rules you learnt about during the preliminary task:
The first technique that we learnt about was match on action, this is when
you edit two clips together so that they follow on from each other perfectly.
The second rule was the 180 degree rule, this is when you are filming you
don’t move the camera over 180 degree around the action. If you did go
over 180 then it would confuses the audience as it is harder to grasp where
about everything is in the room. The third technique that we had to use was
shot reverse shot, this is when you swap between two characters during a
conversation. For example you have a clip of actor one then it switches to
actor two and then back to actor one again.
2. List three things that went well during the filming/editing process:
Something that went well during filming was the lighting of the room,
during filming we used natural light and a bit of artificial lighting, this went
well as it allowed us to get a clear shot of the actors. It also allowed us to
have consistent lighting so that all of our clips looked the same.
Another thing that went well was the positioning of the camera, because we
stuck to the 180 degree rule all of our clips made sense and weren’t
confusing for the audience to watch.
The final thing that went well was matching up the door opening clips,
because the actor had been consistent with their movement it flowed and
matched perfectly without having to spend too much time editing it.
List three things you think could have been improved in these stages:
The first thing that I think could have been improved was the focus of the
actors. We had to do a couple of the same clips more than once because
they either giggled or looked at the camera.
The next thing that could have been improved was the conversation
between the two actors. One of the actors spoke very fast and straight after
the other one. This made it quite difficult to edit the conversion so that it
was natural and fluent.
The final thing that could have been improved was the movement of the
actors when they sat down, I found it very hard to find a perfect spot where
they both flowed on fluently. Next time I would make sure that my directing
was more precise to make the editing easier.
3. Has the preliminary task given you any ideas for you 2-minute film
opening? If so, what? If not – think, then say
The task didn’t really give me any ideas about what type of action I wanted
in my film, however it did make me realise that when I am filming I need to
be very precise with what I tell the actors to do, such as how they sit down
and the exact time when they should start speaking, this is so that when it
comes to editing I don’t have the trouble that I had during the preliminary
task and it would make the overall film run much smother.
