1. Q1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
Front cover:
Before I had started to plan my own magazine I researched existing magazines to identify the
codes and conventions which are already used in existing indie music magazine. One of the front
covers I looked into was “uncut” I like how there was enough text but it didn’t look crowded. I also
liked how the main head line was over the image. My initial idea for the image was the boys
staged the way they are on the uncut magazine but the image which is now on my magazine is
much better. After seeing this magazine I used some of the ideas to create my magazine. I was
really happy with how my final front cover ended up, by keeping minimal images and text made it
look neat and tidy and also made it look more professional. As my image was initially meant to
have three models on, I used the image which only had one of them in, it was a medium close up
of a boy sitting down playing the guitar. I think his posture and facial expressions really conveys
something about the personality of him and shows a lot of attitude which fits into the genre of
music. The image being in the centre of the page made it stand out more, which also made the
cover lines more visible. As my magazine is new to the market I tried to make the title stand out
as much as possible. After experimenting on Photoshop, I decided that the black and red text
would look better and stand out clearer, making it much easier to read.
Contents page:
In my contents page I made sure the page was dominated by artist images and made sure there
was one larger than the others. I think my contents page is like a Kerrang contents page more
than any other magazines content’s page. I decided to use categories like a kerrang contents
page when I first seen it, Dividing everything up into sections is also a code and conventions so I
believe I did that well, as I separated the featured and regular articles, I also added in interviews
to make my magazine different to most. The page numbers are bold and they all stand out well.
It Is obvious of which image links to which article and it is very easy to follow.
2. Double page spread:
My contents page is very simple but does follow the codes and conventions of a magazine well.
It is a lot like kerrangs contents page which is displayed bellow. One main image fills up one
side. The main title grabs the attention of the audience, mine may grab the audience as he is a
unknown artist so they may want to get to know who he is. There is a introduction about the
audience, which will tease the audience to read the article. There is a stand first explaining how I
have wrote the article and taken the images. It consists of the same colours on the page, but also
throughout the magazine. I have used a quote from the article and printed it bigger in the middle
of the text to break it up but to also get the attention of the reader. The artist is looking directly at
you which is a direct address to the reader.
