History Of Computers
•Before the 1500s, in Europe, calculations were made
with an abacus
Invented around 500BC, available in many
cultures (China, Mesopotamia, Japan, Greece,
Rome, etc.)
•In 1642, Blaise Pascal (French mathematician,
physicist, philosopher) invented a mechanical
calculator called the Pascaline
•In 1671, Gottfried von Leibniz (German
mathematician, philosopher) extended the Pascaline to
do multiplications, divisions, square roots: the Stepped
Reckoner
None of these machines had memory, and they
required human intervention at each step

In 1822 Charles Babbage (English
mathematician, philosopher), sometimes called
the “father of computing” built the Difference
Engine

Machine designed to automate the computation
(tabulation) of polynomial functions (which
are known to be good approximations of many
useful functions)
– Implements some storage

In 1833 Babbage designed the Analytical
Engine, but he died before he could build it
– It was built after his death, powered by
steam

• In electronics, a vacuum tube, electron
tube (in North America), thermionic
valve, tube, or valve is a device
controlling electric current through a
vacuum in a sealed container. The
container is often thin transparent glass in
a roughly cylindrical shape
• A transistor is a semiconductor device
used to amplify and switch electronic
signals and electrical power. It is
composed of semiconductor material with
at least three terminals for connection to
an external circuit. A voltage or current
applied to one pair of the transistor's
terminals changes the current through
another pair of terminals.
• Because the controlled (output) power can
be higher than the controlling (input)
power, a transistor can amplify a signal.
Today, some transistors are packaged
individually, but many more are found
embedded in integrated circuits.
• A semiconductor is a material which has
electrical conductivity between that of a
conductor such as copper and an insulator
such as glass. The conductivity of a
semiconductor increases with increasing
temperature
• An electrical insulator is a material
whose internal electric charges do not flow
freely, and which therefore does not
conduct an electric current
• An integrated circuit or monolithic
integrated circuit (also referred to as an
IC, a chip, or a microchip) is a set of
electronic circuits on one small plate
("chip") of semiconductor material,
normally silicon. This can be made much
smaller than a discrete circuit made from
independent components.
• Integrated circuits are used in virtually all
electronic equipment today and have
revolutionized the world of electronics.

• ICs can be made very compact, having up
to several billion transistors and other
electronic components
• Very-large-scale integration (VLSI) is
the process of creating integrated circuits
by combining thousands of transistors into
a single chip. VLSI began in the 1970s
when complex semiconductor and
communication technologies were being
developed. The microprocessor is a VLSI
device.
