2. Introduction
How many of you have watched the Iron Man Movie?
The protagonist uses a screenless display to
perform operations.
It looks like it's some out-of-the-world graphics,
right?
It's what called “Screenless Display”
The screenless display technology is used to
transfer or display information without using a
physical screen.
3. Introduction
• Screenless display is the present evolving technology in the field of
the computer-enhanced technologies.
• It is going to be the one of the greatest technological development
in the coming future years.
• Development work still going on this new emerging technology
which can change the whole spectacular view of the screenless
displays.
4. Technical Background
• First screenless display is Google Glass
sits on the face like a pair of glasses, and
on one eye it has a block of glass that
allows you to see augmented reality.
• Images can be displayed right in front of
your eye, as well as text and information
about objects and places that are in front of
you.
5. Technical Background
• Virtual Retinal Display (VRD), a screenless display technology allowing
the image directly to be projected on to the retina. In VRD, no real
image is produced. It just beams the image to our eye balls directly. The
user will feel that the display is floating in the space in front of him.
6. Description
• VRD uses a photon source generating a coherent beam of light.
Laser Diode like coherent source will help the VRD to give a
diffraction limited spot on retina. Followed by Intensity
Modulation of light beam is done generally to match the intensity
of the image. Then, Beam Scanning is done to keep the image
pixels properly on the retina.
7. Synaptic Interface
• Synaptic Interfaces(another screenless display technology) does not
use light at all and the visual image is directly given to the brain. The
technology is in the advancement mode and it is now been tested on
humans too.
8. Virtual Reality Googles
• Virtual Reality Goggles (VRG) is an eyewear display device. Wearer
feels like he/she is interacting with a series of computer generated
images. Consist display screens in front of face. These lenses will
show two images, one per each eye and the brain combines them to
form a three dimensional image.
9. Advantages
• Low power requirements
• Higher resolution images
• Greater portability
• Wider angle of view
• More accurate color
• Greater brightness and better contrast
• Ability to present 3D images
10. Disadvantages
• You'll miss enjoying entertainment with your family or friends.
As the screenless display technology is designed only to
accomodate single user at a time!
• You'll miss physical touch of your device as there'll be no
screen.
• It'll be a hard time to convince users to switch from traditional
devices(with screen) to this screenless-display technology
• Screenless display is costlier than on-screen technology
11. Real Time Applications
• Screenless displays are used mainly in medical holography
for medical imaging applications.
• They are expected to find applications in commercial,
consumer, aerospace & defense, and automotive sectors.
• They are currently used in holographic displays, head
mounted displays, and head-up displays.
• The total screenless display market was valued at USD 242.1
Million in 2014 and expected to reach USD 1,242.3 Million
by 2020
12. Conclusion
• The screenless display technology is used to transfer or
display information without using a screen.
• The advancement in the field of screenless displays would
lead to the replacement of touch screen displays by
screenless ones in the near future.
• In due course of time, hardware component is expected
to become economical.
• This technology is not developed fully till now and is
available in a limited range of products.
