• To explore ways to mobilize a variety of
actions at all levels to enhance breast
feeding and IYCF.

• World Breastfeeding Week 2016 (1-7 Aug) focuses on-
• the 17 SDGs that govt. around the world
have agreed to achieve by 2030.

1st goal on “No poverty”- natural, affordable,
economical way.
2nd goal on “zero hunger”- exclusive and continued
breastfeeding n beyond.
3rd goal on “good health & wellbeing”- both child
and mother.
4th goal on “quality education”- mental and
cognitive development.

• Preventing 13% of all deaths of children
under 5 years
• Reduce 1/3rd of respiratory infection
• And about half of all diarrhea episodes.
• Lancet says longer breast fed- higher
intelligence.
• Reduction in risk of breast and ovarian
cancer of mother (7%)

POVERTY REDUCTION
• Provides long term health and nutrition
benefit to the child
• Affordable
• Reduce type-2 DM by 35%
• Reduce obesity by 26%, 1/4th of India’s
20% obese children between 5-17 age
group.
12. WHERE INDIA STANDS ON
BREASTFEEDING POLICY,
PROGRAMME AND PRACTICES
• NFHS-4 data of 17 states- India is just doing average.
• Key indicators are-
• Initiation of breastfeeding 50.5% while institutional
delivery is 84.3%
• Exclusive breastfeeding 57%
• Complementary feeding 49.6%
13. ACTION IDEAS
• Organize workshop in school and colleges
• Conduct exhibition, hold a painting, debate,
songs etc on WBW theme.
• Organize mike rally/ street theatre to
spread awareness about risk of formula
feeding.
• Use social media to inform wider group of
people.
