This slide covers Ancient Greek, Roman and Syrian oil lamps. A wick made of cotton or flax would have been placed in the smaller hole, with the lamp filled with olive oil. A filled lamp would burn for about 10 hours, a light brighter than a candle, but still dim by our standards, about as bright as a 40 Walt bulb. Stay tuned for the second part of this video which will cover oil lamps from the Byzantine Empires and the Holy Lands. Visit www.sadighgallery.com to view complete collection.
