Analysing horror film trailers
1.
2. INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 TRAILER 2013
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8B9hisNcuw
What do I like about this trailer?
•
I really like how this trailer has used old nursery rhymes in very
tense situations as I believe that it leaves the viewer on edge and
makes them feel extremely uncomfortable.
•
I also really appreciate how the main focus of there scary elements
in the trailer are things such as the character waking up in the middle
of the night and believing that there is something at the end of their
bed rather than seeing the scariest monster in the room.
3. What do I not like about this trailer?
•
I don’t like how the music over powers the importance of the scenes
in the trailer as I think that it distracts the viewer from some
significant parts of the trailer that help build up a story rather than
numerous scary things.
How has an impression of the film / artist been created
through mise-en-scene?
• From watching the trailer I can come to the conclusion that the film is
a family story featuring horror film characteristics such as dim lighting,
a dark and creepy house setting, the spirits having scary white ghost
like make-up and an in the middle of no-where setting.
4. THE CONJURING TRAILER 2013
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k10ETZ41q5o
What do I like about this trailer?
•
I love how this trailer gives you an adrenaline rush through the use of
slow prolonged movements in tense moments.
•
I also really like the use of religious elements such as a cross and
bible used to combine the feel of good (angel) against evil (devil).
5. What do I not like about this trailer?
•
I do not like how this trailer gives too much away about the films story as I
believe that it is better when trailers leave their audience wondering what the
film is about so they are more likely to go and watch it. Because even though
the trailer would scare them, they still would find the truth behind the story
from just watching the trailer.
How has an impression of the film / artist been created through mise-enscene?
•
The use of mise-en-scene features such as a spooky large house in the
middle of no-where setting and a river by the end of the garden has created
an impression of the film to be very similar to other horror films but deceiving
in the way that you are terrifically surprised by the trailers true meaning.
6. THE DEVIL INSIDE TRAILER 2012
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWPGSbHlI2w
What do I like about this trailer?
•
I like how this trailers main focus is very different to other trailers in
the way that it is not necessarily about scary things happening in a
home, it’s about something truly terrifying taking over this persons
body.
•
I also really like the short summary of what the trailer is linked to (e.g
the womans mother murdering three people when she was a child)
because it makes the trailer stand out from the others.
7. What do I not like about the trailer?
•
I do not like how this trailer gives too much away, the audience find
out too much about the story leading them to come to their own
conclusions to the whole story behind the trailer.
How has an impression of the film / artist been created through
mise-en-scene?
• The mise-en-scene elements such as a bright and white mental home
setting, religious props and gowns and a very urban setting give the
impression that this film is going to be very different to other horror
films and will break the conventions of a normal horror film by
challenging the devil and God to each other.
