South Dakota Right to Life announces its support for HB 1237, the Abortion Counseling bill. This is a pro-life bill that will save lives by limiting the 72-hour wait period for an abortion to only 72 business hours that would exclude weekends and federal and state holidays. We urge you to contact your legislators to ask them for their support on this bill. We also announce our support for HB 1236, the Wrongful Life and Wrongful Birth bill. This is a pro-life bill that will protect physicians from being sued for not carrying out an abortion or prescribing an abortion through genetic counseling. We urge you to contact your legislators to ask them for their support on this bill. We announce our opposition to HB 1094, the Gestational Carrier and Surrogacy bill. While South Dakota Right to Life does not take a stance on surrogacy, this bill needs additional protections for the gestational carrier, surrogate, and the intended parents to prevent situations in which abortions will result from coercion or extortion. We will become neutral on this bill if and when our amended changes to the bill are accepted. We urge you to contact your legislators to ask them to amend this bad bill to protect gestational carriers, surrogates, and intended parents from abortions due to coercion or extortion. We announce our opposition to HB 1192, the Durable Power of Attorney bill. HB 1192 needs additional protections within the durable power of attorney form for which this bill prescribes. As it is written, it leaves out many references to state law that define your right to continue to receive nutrition and hydration in emergency situations. We urge you to contact your legislators to ask them to amend this bad bill to protect people from health care rationing by making a vague, anti-life durable power of attorney form into a better product that protects life. We announce that we are not currently taking a stance on HB 1214, the Prenatal Care for Illegal Immigrants bill. HB 1214 seems to focus on immigration rather than the right to life or any interest in furthering the right to life for the unborn child. We ask that you keep a close watch on this piece of legislation for further updates and possible changes.
