 Blood Pressure: force exerted by the blood
against any unit area of the vessel wall.
 Resistance: the impediment to blood flow in a
vessel
 Laminar: blood flows in streamlines, with
each layer of blood remaining the same
distance from the vessel wall.
 Turbulent: blood flowing in all directions in
the vessel

ν is the mean velocity of blood flow (cm/s)
d is the vessel diameter (cm),
ρ is density
η is the viscosity (in poise)

 Conductance is a measure of the blood flow through
a vessel for a given pressure difference.
 Small changes in diameter
alter vessels ability to conduct
blood
 States ‘the rate of blood flow is directly proportional to the
pressure difference and radius (^4) and inversely
proportional to viscosity and length of the vessel’
 F is the rate of blood flow,
 ΔP is the pressure difference between the ends of the vessel,
 r is the radius of the vessel,
 l is length of the vessel, and
 η is viscosity of the blood.
