2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Our music video uses the convention of a narrative through out. However we kept the narrative ‘loose’ and ‘suggestive’ rather than realistic. This is because we wanted to promote the band and by keeping the story line loose, the audience can interpret the narrative how they want to. Our narrative was the male actor running however it doesn't show the audience where he is running from or where he is running to- it is left to the audience's imagination. This worked well as we asked different people where they though he was running to and we received a variety of feedback ranging from running to see his lover to running to college as he has missed his bus. We also used a male singer which keeps to the conventions of music video’s, that the same sex has to be singing/miming the lyrics. However , we also challenged this by having two females miming a few lines near the beginning of the video. We did this to add an unexpected take on the male’s voice. Even though we had the two girls miming, they were not looking straight into the camera. This comes across as being feminist because the two other males actors are looking into the camera.
3. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? The link between our music video and our print work is very prominent. We wanted to have a clear link so that the audience would remember the cover to the DVD pack and so that it would stand out in a music store and remind them of the music video. We had the idea of throwing paint on the male actor to give an original take to an Indi music video. We then decided that it would fit nicely to have this as our icon and the front covers as it very memorable. The male actor covered in paint is the main image presented through the video so if you walked into a music store and saw this image again, you would remember exactly where you had seen it and this would influence you to buy the DVD/CD. We also kept the booklet ( which is found inside the DVD pack) with the same style as the front cover and the video. We did this to show continuity and to make sure the image was easily identifiable.
4. What have you learnt from your audience feedback? Most of the feedback we received was positive for example, one of our audience members wrote ‘ I really enjoyed watching the music video and fully understood the storyline. In particular I liked the ‘paint throwing’ section as I thought it original and I had never seen anything like it before’. We were both extremely pleased with this quote as we worked hard to make sure the story line was recognisable. However , another audience member quoted that the second chorus should have had a different video section and not the same repeated twice. We fully understood that this would have been some peoples views on the repeated chorus however we did it because we noticed (in our planning) that repetition was a key feature in music video within our style. However we will bare it in mind for future projects.
5. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? As a finished product I think we used new media technologies well . Editing was conducted on Adobe Premiere Pro which took some time to get use to but in the end became second nature. This must have been the most used media technology as editing took the longest to complete. The camera we used was a Canon Digital. This was easy to use from the beginning and the finished quality of the video looked professional and this was due to the sharpness of the recording. We also used ‘YouTube’ as a new media technology and this was vital for the research part of the task . If the internet wasn't present then it would have MUCH harder to research the Indi style as that too is fairly new. In the case of the internet not being there, we would have had to use books to do our research, however it was much easier and more efficient to log on to the World Wide Web to get our information. Another new media technology was the ‘Blogs’. Apart from last year, this is a new concept to me however it became more easy as we completed more. We tried to keep our blog fun and interesting and not just essay after essay. We added video, power points and picture to make the finished blog look fun and exciting. We also kept in touch through the project through texts, emails and phone calls which are also forms of new media technologies.
