A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile in 2010, causing widespread damage. The earthquake destroyed buildings, bridges and roads across many areas of Chile. It also triggered a tsunami that caused over $30 billion in losses and hundreds of deaths in Japan. The earthquake and resulting tsunami cut power, water, and telecommunications in Chile and Hawaii. Aftershocks continued to hit Chile in the aftermath.

The Chile earthquake occurred in 1960. This
earthquake occurred in Chile that was on the
opposite side of Japan. However,The quake
damage was received in Japan. Of course,
there was damage also in the Pacific Ocean
other than Japan. The scale of the
earthquake is assumed to be magnitude 9.5.

3. Damage in Japan
The damage of the tsunami due to the
earthquake was large in Japan. This tsunami
was named a Chile earthquake tsunami. The
tsunami of 10m reached in the maximum in
Iwate. The dying number of people is
assumed to be hundreds of people.

The 8.8 quake caused widespread

and roads in many areas. Electricity,
water and phone lines were cut. Hawaii
later lifted its tsunami warning after
waves measuring just under 1m (3ft)
high struck but caused no damage.

were killed, several buildings collapsed
- including a car park where dozens of
cars were smashed.A fire at a chemical
plant in the outskirts of the capital
forced the evacuation of the
neighbourhood.Ms Bachelet declared a
"state of catastrophe" in affected areas
and appealed for calm.

Other residents of Chillan and Curico said
communications were down but running water
was still available.Many of Chile's news websites
and radio stations are still not accessible. In
Washington, President Barack Obama said the
US had aid resources in position to deploy
should the Chilean government ask for help.

7. United States Geological Survey
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the
earthquake struck at a depth of about 35km. It also
recorded at least eight aftershocks, the largest of 6.9
magnitude at 0801 GMT. The USGS said tsunami
effects had been observed at Valparaiso, west of
Santiago, with a wave height of 1.69m above normal
sea level.
