6. Division
• Division is splitting into equal parts or groups.
• We use the symbol, or sometimes the symbol to divide.
Example: 4 2 or 4 / 2 or 4
2
Symbols
7. Terminologies
Dividend:
The amount that you want to divide is called “ dividend”.
Divisor:
The “divisor” is the number that the dividend will be divided by.
Example:
10 5
8. The left over is called Remainder.
sometimes we cannot divide things up evenly ... there may be something left over.
Example: There are 7 bones to share with 2 pups.
But 7 cannot be divided exactly into 2 groups,
so each pup gets 3 bones,
but there will be 1 left over:
Remainder
9. Quotient
The answer after you divide one number by another
i-e dividend ÷ divisor = quotient
Example: in 12 ÷ 4 = 3
3 is the quotient
11. How to identify division word problem
• Divide evenly
• Cut
• Split
• Share
• Each
• Every
• Average
• Equal pieces
• Out of
• Ratio
• Quotient
12. Mandy has 36 cookies and she wants to share
them with her friends 6 friends. How many
cookies will each friend receive.
The key words here are share and each
because they both refer to division.
14. Strategy no. 1
• Add the divisor until you get the dividend digit
• Example
• 24 3
• 3 3+3 = 6 6+3 = 9 9+3 = 12 12+3 = 15 15+3 = 18 18+3 = 21
21+3 = 24
• So 8 is the answer.
15. Strategy no. 2
• Subtract the divisor from the dividend unless you get zero. The
number of times you have subtracted is the answer to your
question
• Example
16 2
• 16-2 = 14 14-2 = 12 12-2= 10 10-2 = 8 8-2 = 6 6-2 = 4 4-2 = 2
2-2 = 0
• 8 is the answer. 8
2 16
16
17. Strategy no. 4
Ali has 6 pieces of pizza. He wants to share it with Aliya. How
many pieces of each of them will get?
Total pieces = 6
We will share one by one such as
So each of them gets 3 pieces of pizza.
18. Practice it on your own
1. 24/3
2. 45/9
3. 49/7
4. 84/4
5. 135/3
6. 215/5
7. 48/6
19. 1. There are 2 students in the class and 16 marbles. If the
marbles are divided equally among the students, how many
does each student get?
2. There are 5 students in the class and 25 eggs. If the eggs are
divided equally among the students, how many does each
student get?
3. There are 36 bananas in Diane's banana collection. If the
bananas are organized into 6 groups, how big is each group?
4. There are 10 students in the class and 90 eggs. If the eggs
are divided equally among the students, how many does each
student get?
5. There are 7 students in the class and 63 tickets. If the tickets
are divided equally among the students, how many does each
student get?
6. Albert has 35 oranges stored in boxes. If the are 7 boxes, how
many oranges must go in each box?
7. There are 4 students in the class and 4 eggs. If the eggs are
divided equally among the students, how many does each
student get?
