Objective :Define recycle, reduce,
reuse , recover and repair in
waste materials.
S5MT – Ie- g-3
1. What materials are shown in the picture?
2. Where can we found these materials?
3. Are these materials useful?
4. How can these materials be useful?
1.Group the class into five
groups.
2. Distribute the picture to each
group and let them discuss
among the group how they
understand the 5Rs based on the
given picture

Waste management refers to the practice of proper
waste disposal. Wastes refer to used or consumed
product or materials. A very good sample of this is
garbage. Waste management is implemented
anywhere in order to clean the environment and
make everyone healthy. Surely, you do not want to
leave a place full of garbage and wastes. Aside from
their foul smell, we do not want to get sick cause by
them. A kind of waste management we follow
nowadays is the 5R’s of waste management.
5R’s in Waste Management
The 5R’s of waste management is the modern
way of organizing garbage and waste materials.
The focus of 5R’s waste materials is to:
1.Promote a clean and healthful environment.
2.Transform garbage into something useful (
Example : used cooking oil to fuel through
recycling ) , thus
3.Making the earth free from any garbage or
waste material “ zero waste “
What are the 5R’s means?
1. Reduce - simply means lessen the use of unnecessary
materials. It means buying only what is needed. It means
buying items in refillable containers and in bulk to save on
packaging. It means avoiding disposable or single use
products. It also means using cloth bag instead of plastic
bags and renting items that are used once or twice only.
To reduce is the most important part of waste
management because it lessens the unnecessary use of
materials , energy , and water before they are produced.
Refillable container
2. Reuse - means to use again, if not by you, then by others.
Clothes, cooking wares , bags, shoes and other clothes are some
reusable materials. Donate reusable items in your house that
you do not need others can use them again. Buy household
items that are made of repaired and reused. Papers,
cardboards. Glass jars, plastic boxes and bags are reusable items.
Print or write on both sides of paper or use them as scratch
papers. reuse boxes as organizer of toys and other materials.
Use reusable container for storing food and other items instead
of foil, plastic wrap, and Styrofoam. Choose food items packed in
a nice containers like box , bottles , or jars instead of disposable
plastic wrappers. You can use the empty containers as flower
vase and storage of other things.
REUSE
3. Recycle - means processing the waste
materials to make another product. Making
decorative objects out of newspaper or colored
pages of magazines or making baskets or bags
out of used tarpaulin are examples of recycling.
Papers, plastics , tin cans , cardboards, glasses,
aluminum, and other metal scraps are some of
the things that can be recycled.
RECYCLE
4. Repair - is fixing or restoring
broken items to be used again. It
means mending torn clothes and
gluing some materials that need to be
put together. Electrical appliances
computers and other electronic
devices can be repaired. Worn out
shoes and bags of good quality can be
repaired and used again.
REPAIR
5. Recover - means taking energy or
materials from wastes that cannot be used
anymore. Composting is an example of
recovery.
Recover
Study the pictures and identify which of the 5Rs each picture belongs.

5. Anna’s school always collect old newspaper to be used as scrap paper.
6. During Christmas, Kathy and her friends made a Christmas lantern made purely of mussel
shells and candy wrappers.
7. Carol bought good vegetables only enough for her one-day meal.
8. Mely opens a garage sale in her place to sell her old furniture.
9. Johnny always brings his water tumbler every time he buys juice from the canteen.
10. Instead of throwing away all the soft drinks cans, used them as pots for the plants.
1.What does 5Rs stand for?
2.How can we reduce, reuse, recycle,
repair and recover our wastes?
3. Why do we need to manage our
waste?
4. Is 5Rs helpful/effective strategy in
waste management?
• Read each sentence below. Write the word recycle, reduce, reuse, repair,
or recover before the sentence that correctly defined each of the 5Rs.

Grade 5 5Rs Science waste management.pptx

  • 1. Objective :Define recycle, reduce, reuse , recover and repair in waste materials. S5MT – Ie- g-3
  • 2. 1. What materials are shown in the picture? 2. Where can we found these materials? 3. Are these materials useful? 4. How can these materials be useful?
  • 3. 1.Group the class into five groups. 2. Distribute the picture to each group and let them discuss among the group how they understand the 5Rs based on the given picture
  • 6. Waste management refers to the practice of proper waste disposal. Wastes refer to used or consumed product or materials. A very good sample of this is garbage. Waste management is implemented anywhere in order to clean the environment and make everyone healthy. Surely, you do not want to leave a place full of garbage and wastes. Aside from their foul smell, we do not want to get sick cause by them. A kind of waste management we follow nowadays is the 5R’s of waste management.
  • 7. 5R’s in Waste Management The 5R’s of waste management is the modern way of organizing garbage and waste materials. The focus of 5R’s waste materials is to: 1.Promote a clean and healthful environment. 2.Transform garbage into something useful ( Example : used cooking oil to fuel through recycling ) , thus 3.Making the earth free from any garbage or waste material “ zero waste “
  • 8. What are the 5R’s means? 1. Reduce - simply means lessen the use of unnecessary materials. It means buying only what is needed. It means buying items in refillable containers and in bulk to save on packaging. It means avoiding disposable or single use products. It also means using cloth bag instead of plastic bags and renting items that are used once or twice only. To reduce is the most important part of waste management because it lessens the unnecessary use of materials , energy , and water before they are produced.
  • 10. 2. Reuse - means to use again, if not by you, then by others. Clothes, cooking wares , bags, shoes and other clothes are some reusable materials. Donate reusable items in your house that you do not need others can use them again. Buy household items that are made of repaired and reused. Papers, cardboards. Glass jars, plastic boxes and bags are reusable items. Print or write on both sides of paper or use them as scratch papers. reuse boxes as organizer of toys and other materials. Use reusable container for storing food and other items instead of foil, plastic wrap, and Styrofoam. Choose food items packed in a nice containers like box , bottles , or jars instead of disposable plastic wrappers. You can use the empty containers as flower vase and storage of other things.
  • 11. REUSE
  • 12. 3. Recycle - means processing the waste materials to make another product. Making decorative objects out of newspaper or colored pages of magazines or making baskets or bags out of used tarpaulin are examples of recycling. Papers, plastics , tin cans , cardboards, glasses, aluminum, and other metal scraps are some of the things that can be recycled.
  • 14. 4. Repair - is fixing or restoring broken items to be used again. It means mending torn clothes and gluing some materials that need to be put together. Electrical appliances computers and other electronic devices can be repaired. Worn out shoes and bags of good quality can be repaired and used again.
  • 16. 5. Recover - means taking energy or materials from wastes that cannot be used anymore. Composting is an example of recovery.
  • 18. Study the pictures and identify which of the 5Rs each picture belongs. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
  • 19. Classify each sentence as to recycle, reuse, repair, reduce and recover RECYCLE REDUCE REUSE REPAIR RECOVER 1. Margaret found her old dolls and gave them to her baby sister. 2. Instead of buying a new bag for the coming school days, Denise washed and fixed her old one. 3. Jason used paper bags in the grocery instead of plastic bags. 4.
