HISTORY
PRE-COLONIALISM:
• Human habitation of Australia is estimated to
have begun around 65,000 to 70,000
years ago.
• The first inhabitants of Australia were the
ancestors of modern Aboriginal
Australians.
• At the time of European settlement in the
late 18th century, most Indigenous
Australians were hunters.
HISTORY
Captain James Cook (British) discovered Australia in 1770.
He landed in New South Wales and claimed this land for the King of
England.
A British penal colony was set in Australia: Britain sent prisoners and criminals.
Europeans sold the land of Aborigines and killed thousands of them.
EUROPEAN ARRIVAL
HISTORY
NATIONHOOD:
Between 1855 and 1890, the six colonies individually gained
responsible government, while remaining part of the British
Empire.
On 1 January 1901 Australia obtained the
independence and the Commonwealth of
Australia was established as a dominion of
the British Empire.

•The Outback is the vast, remote interior of Australia.
•Characterized by: a low human population density and a huge natural environment.
•Indigenous Australians have lived in the Outback for approximately 50,000 years.
•There you can find reed kangaroos, dingoes, camels and snakes.
•The weather in the outback is extreme (very dry and hot during the day but the nights are
cold).
MY TRIP TO
THE OUTBACK
My French friend and I booked a three-day tour.
We saw the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park
and Kings Canyon.
We went there in July (the Australian winter)
We could saw something very unusual in this area... And very special!!

WILDLIFEAustralia is one of the most important nations on Earth for
biodiversity.
Most of Australia’s wildlife is found nowhere else in the world,
making its conservation very important.
Sadly, Australia is facing an extinction crisis. Australia has the
worst mammal extinction rate in the world: 30 native mammals
have become extinct since Europeans arrived.
Kangaroos and koalas
are only found in
