RI President-elect Sakuji Tanaka will ask Rotarians to build Peace Through Service in 2012-13. Rtn.
Send Reports Tanaka unveiled the RI theme during the opening plenary session of the 2012 International
& Feedbacks to Assembly, a training event for incoming Rotary District Governors on 16th January 2012. "Peace,
rotaract3230eb@gmail.com in all of the ways that we can understand it, is a real goal and a realistic goal for Rotary," he said.
"Peace is not something that can only be achieved through agreements, by governments, or
through heroic struggles. It is something that we can find and that we can achieve, every day and
in many simple ways." Peace has different meanings for different people, Rtn. Tanaka said. "No
definition is right, and no definition is wrong," he said. "However we use the word, this is what
peace means for us. "No matter how we use, or understand the word, Rotary can help us to
achieve it," he added.
Rtn. Tanaka, a businessman from the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan Area, shared how becoming a
Rtr. PP. Manikandan K. Rotarian broadened his understanding of the world. After joining the Rotary Club of Yashio, in
DRR 1975, he said, he began to realize that his life's purpose was not to make more money, but to be
useful to other people. "I realised that by helping others, even in the simplest of ways, I could help

to build peace," Rtn. Tanaka said.

Chairman - Newsletters individual helped his country rebuild after the tsunami and earthquake in March. "This is a lesson
that I think the whole world can learn from, in a positive way. When we see the needs of others as
more important than our own needs -- when we focus our energies on a shared goal that is for the
good of all -- this changes everything," he said. "It changes our priorities in a completely
fundamental way. And it changes how we understand the idea of peace." Tanaka will ask
Rotarians to focus their energy on supporting the three priorities of the RI Strategic Plan , he said.
He added that he will ask the incoming leaders to promote three Rotary peace forums, to be held
in Hiroshima, Japan; Berlin; and Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. “In Rotary, our business is not profit. Our
business is peace,” he said. “Our reward is not financial, but the happiness and satisfaction of
seeing a better, more peaceful world, one that we have achieved through our own efforts.”

It was James Wheeler Davidson, considered as the Marco Polo of Rotary in Asia, who started the Rotary
Clubs of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras. Sir Frederick E. James (he was knighted in 1941) was no stranger to
Rotary. He had been president of the Rotary Club of Calcutta in 1924-25 and 1925-26. It was his job as Vice
President of the United Planters Association of South India that brought him to Madras a fortunate move
from the Rotary's point of view. It must have been a great encouragement to Davidson to find another so
devoted to the extension of Rotary in India. Sir F. E. James is described as having been 'a man of high
character and pleasing personality, a good speaker and, most important of all, he possessed a
comprehensive knowledge of Rotary.
Davidson recommended that Rotary International appoint Sir James as Honorary Commissioner for
Rotary International of the Middle Asia Region. In 1932, Sir James organized the first Convention of Rotary
Clubs in India, Burma and Ceylon. The convention was held at Calcutta. The first meeting of the Rotary
Club of Madras, the first club in South India, was held on May 10,1929, at the Connemara Hotel. The 30
charter members included Sir James represented the leaders of society and industry. All but three were
present at that first meeting. The first President of the Club was Rtn. C.G. Armstrong, Chairman of the
Madras Port Trust; the first Secretary was Morton Chance of the Hotel Chain.
The Club was chartered on July 19,1929.It is a matter of pride that the first Director of Rotary International
from India was none other than Sir F. E. James of the Rotary Club of Madras. He served in this post during
1933-34. Sir James added another first to his credit when he became the first Governor of District 89 in
1936-37 and served a second term in 1938-39. The first district conference was also held during his tenure
as Governor in 1937. It is interesting to note that Sir F.E. James became the first District Governor of our
District after becoming the first R.I. Director from India. The Rotary Club of Madras originally belonged to
District 56 in 1929. District 56 became District 89 in 1937-38. In 1942, this was in District 91, and then 93.
In 1959-60 District 320 was formed, comprising of the States of Kerala and Madras in South India and
Ceylon.
In 1984, Rotary International took up the work of reorganizing the Districts and District 320 became
District 323. Subsequently this became the current District 3230 and now comprises of the Revenue
Districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Tiruvannamalai. Our R.I. District 3230 is one of the
532 Districts spread out in 207 countries of the world, and as of 31st December 2007, the total number of
clubs is 32912 with a membership of 1.21 million. As of May 2008, District 3230 consists of 103 clubs and
total membership of over 4200.

3. IGNITE - District Interact Conference
The District Rotaract Council conducted District Interact Conference - IGNITE on
21st January 2012. Rtn. PDG. Kalimamani Abirami Ramanathan was the Chief Guest
for the inauguration. Rtn. Omprakash, Chairman - Interact, R.I. District 3230 was the
Guest of Honour. The event saw the participation of 280 Interactors from 14 Schools
in Chennai. Rtn. Babu Peram, District Rotary Secretary, R.I. District 3230 was the
Chief Guest for the Valedictory. Prof. Vijay Kumar, Faculty Advisor, RC D.G. Vaishnav
College was the Guest of Honour.
PROJECT SMILE
The District Community Service Team conducted ‘Project Smile’, a medical camp at
Madipakkam Village, Kancheepuram District alongwith Rotary Club of Guindy and
Arignar Anna Youth Welfare. Rtr. Kishore was the Project Chairman. 200
octogenarians and septuagenarians of the village benefited from the project. It is of
significance that the District Rotaract Council has adopted this village for
conducting its ongoing and future projects with regards to community service. All

The Word 'Conference' symbolises a gathering where Rotaractors from different walks of life and from different
clubs come together and share information. SIGARAM has already generated huge response from Rotaractors
and is expected to host more than 1500 Rotaractors during the 2 day extravaganza.
Some of the highlights of our conferences are: Sessions on Personality development, Current Affairs, Debate,
Business, Cultural Presentations, Light Music and entertainment for the delegates through professional
performances. An important feature of our conference is a session wherein we institute an award namely, “The
Example to Youth Award” to a person who has proved to be an example to the youth by means of their service to
the community through Professional Prowess and Personal Commitment.
