Explain why a pH of 7 indicators a neutral solution- why not some other number?
Explain why a pH of 7 indicators a neutral solution- why not some other number?
Solution
The pH scale is 0-14
So, half of it is pH 7
below pH 7 is acidic and above pH 7 is basic
Thus as we increase pH from 0 to 14, we come across middle of pH scale that is pH 7, where, amount of H+ and OH- in solution are equal to each other, making the solution neutral.
Below pH 7, amount of H+ is greater than OH- and above pH 7, amount of OH- is greater than H+ in solution.
