How did PB achieve this?

1. Setup named layers in MicroStation file
   1. Default Levels 1 – 63 removed
   2. Save File into categories as “templates”

Setting up of Preference Files

1. Import layers into Active File
   1. Copy InRoads “.ini” Files with V8 Suffix i.e.
      Configuration and Wysiwig files
   2. Edit V8 Preference by exchanging the old level to
      the new layer
   3. Save Preference
   4. Remove the pre V8 Preferences

Demonstration
• Creation of Level/ Layer
• Editing of Preference file
• Chainages
• Long Section

Food for Thought?
• When will VicRoads upgrade?

• What do we do with our UCM’s, MDL’s etc?

• Are VicRoads Standards appropriate?

• What if V8 has too many bugs?

• What about the additional training?

  1. Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) is a leading transport, infrastructure and environmental consultancy, committed to delivering technical excellence and superior service. We have around 600 staff throughout Australia with offices in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle, Singleton and Bathurst. We have been in business throughout Australia for over 30 years. Our clients include international id agencies, multinational companies and governmental authorities in Australia and Asia, and numerous large, medium and small enterprises within our area of operations. Formerly known as PPK Environment and Infrastructure, Parsons Brinckerhoff is part of a major global engineering consultancy with over 9000 professional and technical staff operating from 250 offices in nearly 80 countries.
  2. The subject matter of this presentation is InRoads in MicroStation V8, and more specifically “how do the InRoads preference files interface within the revolutionary V8 version of MicroStation”. It is the purpose of this session to provide a brief overview of a very practical way of yet doing as such and to demonstrate that this is easily achievable. The software versions that this demonstration is based upon are MicroStation V8.1 and InRoads V8.4.
  3. The area that has the most significant impact on the operations and interfacing of V8 to the InRoads software is in the Level or now known also as layers structure. With the old pre V8 versions i.e. “J” & “SE” and before the levels hierarchy was governed by a numerical list restricted between 1 to 63 levels. These levels could only be displayed by either the active setting or the symbology. The numerical values were meaningless to anyone who did not possess a hard copy of the coded standards or who was familiar enough with the standards to know them off by heart (as most of you do). The new V8 has addressed these limitations and freed up the old structure to provide additional benefits to the user. These benefits include unlimited level/ layer names inclusive of textual descriptions. Moreover, in addition to providing levels by active, the new structure now caters for levels/ layers by active, symbology or by level. By level means that all the attributes of the symbology may be built in to reside within the level. Therefore, with the selection of by level, the color, weight and line style may also be assigned within the level. The remaining enhancement for V8 is that the defined level/ layer consists of some intelligence in that when the cursor is placed over the lifework, the name of the layer is exhibited on the screen. This facilitates the easy recognition and identification of any level/ layer.
  4. The challenge for V8 users is to adopt a standard suitable for V8. What standard in Victoria is now suitable for MicroStation V8? It could be an In-House, National or the existing VicRoads Standard.
  5. Parsons Brinckerhoff, Melbourne has determined their solution for the the present environment where there is a reluctance from former prime leaders to embrace the new technology. It was decided to adopt the VicRoads Standards as depicted in plan and adopt the level naming structure by replacing the 1-63 level system with the named description of those levels/ layers. The end result is in look and feel at the Cad interface and hard copy output, a true and yet much enhanced VicRoads style standard. The rigidness of the 1-63 level system is now freed up to provide a more complete solution.
  6. The cover of the manual shows the pre V8 version of the VicRoads Road Design Guidelines Part 11 Final Drawing Presentation
  7. The pre V8 standards show the levels defined by numerals, whereas the objective in V8 is to define the same by instead, the description.
  8. How did PB achieve this? There was a three step process involved. The first was to remove the defaulted levels and establish the named level/ layers in MicroStation in template files which covered the required categories. The new layers were then created in the category along with the associated symbologies which enable the layer to be defined “by level”.
  9. The template files are illustrated in the windows explorer page as shown above.
  10. The new look levels/ layer box is activated quickly by clicking on the panel on bottom right of the MicroStation Graphical user Interface. The layers may be added easily and the symbologies assigned.
  11. Once the layers are built into templates, the InRoads preference and style files may be edited to accommodate the new layer settings. To edit these files, first of all the layers must be imported into the active file. If these layers are not present, it will be impossible to capture them in the preference file. The most practical solution is then copy the InRoads preference file and rename it with a V8 prefix. Each individually scaled preference setting is then copied with a V8 prefix and edited to the new V8 symbology. The former V8 Preference file may then be deleted after saving of the new Preference.
  12. We seek to demonstrate these simple setups of editing the preference and settings files and to demonstrate the outputs in the Chainages (stationing), long sections and roadway modelers.
  13. In finishing r
  14. VicRoads are currently testing and assessing V8 and are seeking to move up to V8 shortly. The upgrading to V8 provides a welcome opportunity to upgrade the dated UCM’s currently used. Software evolution should not be confined to the main package but also to subsidiary packages. A lot of the subsidiary packages functions may be no longer required as they are sometimes incorporated into the main package. VicRoads standards are appropriate in the main in look and content. The V8 layers provide the opportunity to enhance the usefulness and to rationalize some of the over prescribed level usage. V8 has provided additional power and functionality along with stability. The perception it contains a lot of bugs belies reality. Additional training should be welcomed and not shunned. The need for further training is in itself an acknowledgement that the users skills base requires broadening which in itself is an asset both to users and employers. It also recognizes that increased capabilities and productivities can be attained over outdated technologies.
