2. What is a Sonnet?
• Before Shakespeare’s day, the word
“sonnet” meant simply “little song,”
i.e., a short lyric poem. It changed
towards the 16th century.
• A sonnet contains 14 lines.
• The three Quatrains of 4 lines each and
a Couplet of 2 lines.
• The themes are revealed in the
Quatrains whereas the Resolution or
Conclusion is projected in the Couplet.
