5. Search as an application tool
ï Itâs fairly obvious but we can search for content
ï Quick access to a dataset
ï Could be cached
ï Could be near real time
ï Security Trimmed results
ï Cross Site Content
ï Easy to work with LARGE sets data
ï Can use SharePoint 2013âs GeoLocation field type to even return results near
userâs location
9. Whatâs the problem
ï All the results look the same
ï Documents and sites look the
same but are not the same
ï This is the experience that
everyone is used to.
10. Current Problem
SharePoint 2010 Search
ï Not easily customizable
ï Changes to Search require an admin
ï SharePoint Enterprise Search not as feature rich as needed
ï FAST Search costs extra
ï FAST Search is not easily configured
ï Refiners are not very snazzy
ï Not easy to administer
11. SharePoint 2013 Search
ï Rewritten to combine SharePoint Enterprise Search and FAST search
ï New Functionality
ï Display Templates
ï Result Types
ï Query Rules
ï Query Builder
ï Site/Site Collection Search Management
ï Result Sources
ï Continuous Crawl
ï Automatic Property Creation
ï Improved speed and scalability
ï Search Data available through REST
12. Display Templates
ï Determine how the content for search will be rendered
ï Written in HTML/JavaScript instead of XSL
ï Best approach is to take an existing template and copy it
ï Place your display templates in your master page folder
15. Result Types
ï Result Types are a combination of conditions and display templates
ï Conditions match properties to identify a particular type of result
ï The result type allows the changing of the appearance of this particular item
ï This is what allows us to bring our and highlight the information that is useful
for each item in search.
ï Based on the conditions we can have specialized displays of content based on
any managed property
16. Building a Result Type
ï Plumb any properties you need into search
ï Create the look you want with a Display Template
ï Hook up the template to a Result Type
ï Try it out with a search!
18. Query Builder: Connecting you to results
Create queries Preview Results

query builder

queries
Fully
integrated
with result
sources and
query rules
Query
variables are
substituted at
query time
