2. Type/Purpose
• Qualitative
• Purpose- to examine predictors of coaching
efficacy, predictors of athletes perceptions of
their coach’s effectiveness and examine the
extent to which coaches’ reports of coaching
efficacy differed from athletes’ perceptions of
their coach’s effectiveness
3. Coaching Efficacy Model
• What is Coaching Efficacy?
• Focuses on four dimensions: motivation, game
strategy, technique and character building.
• Its proposed that certain desirable outcomes
from both athletes and coaches should result
from high levels of coaching efficacy.
– Example of outcomes
• What variables influence Coaching Efficacy?
4. Background
• Athletes perceptions-mediate the relationship
between coaching behaviours and athlete
outcomes
– Two studies (Ice-hockey & intercollegiate soccer;
competence)
• Predictors of perceived coaching effectiveness
may be affected athletes’ personal
characteristics/individual variable.
*Model was developed out of a 5-week seminar with 11 coaches in which dimensions of effective coaching were identified—and it coincided with coaching education literature.
An example would be the coach’s commitment to the team and use of effective motivational techniques.
* Variables that influence Coaching Efficacy includes Coaching experience, prior team success, perceived skill of athletes, social support from school, community and athletes’ parents.
First study- How competent the head coach was in the four dimensions
Second Study- Athletes’ perceptions of motivation competence had a moderately large and positive relationship
