1. Risk assessment
All employers must conduct a risk assessment. If you have fewer than five employees you don't have to write anything down.
We have startedoff the risk assessment for you by including a sample entry for a common hazard to illustrate what is expected (the sample entry is takenfrom an office-based business).
Look at how this might apply to your business, continue by identifying the hazards that are the real priorities in your case and complete the table to suit.
You can print and save this template so you can easily review and update the information as and when required. You may find our example risk assessments a useful guide

Slips and
trips
Students or staff climbing the tower
may trip up the tower ladder and
then fall and hurt themselves.
If there’s cables on the floor, the
tower mightlose its balance ifthe
wheels hita large cable in
movement.
Making sure there’s no cables
or trailing leads in the way
where the tower is being
taken to and set up (the floor
in the hall/theatre/venue).We
are also keeping the hall
clear, e.g. no boxes left or
chairs in the way of the work
space.
Make sure we look at the floor space in
the direction of travel when moving the
tower in the workspace to reduce the risk
of unstabilising the tower. Also, you
shouldn’tbe wearing anyloose clothing
or broken shoes thatcould get caughton
the climb up to the tower and that could
get caughtwhen you’re up there.

Falling
objects and
dropping
equipment
Anyone who comes into the hall
and also the BTEC students could
be injured wherebylights that are
perhaps notrigged properlycould
fall on heads, and if you’re carrying
a heavy piece of lighting equipment
when up the tower, you mightdrop
it on the spotters below, resulting in
potential head injuries.
Learning and demonstrating
how to safelypass heavy
equipmentdown to the people
under the tower and also how
to safely rig a lantern to
ensure itwon’t fall.
Make sure lights are rigged properly, and
wear a hard hat if you’re spotting
someone who’s rigging.
Also, if there is an incidentwhere
something is dropped,the ‘dropper’
should shout“heads!” and then everyone
else mustimmediatelymove as far away
from the sound as possible.

2. Falling from
the tower
The BTEC students and teachers of
BTEC. If not standing on the tower
appropriatelyor if the tower isn’t
stable or set up properly, you could
lose balance and fall,resulting in
head injury and/or broken bones.
Making sure there’s nothing
under the wheels ofthe tower
to ensure stability,as well as
making sure there is someone
(or a few people) spotting you
with a hardhatwhilstyou’re up
the tower. Also, justlike
climbing a ladder,you must
always maintain 3 points of
contact when climbing the
tower ladder.
Make sure the tower brakes are always
on before the riggers climb up the tower,
but overall, justmake sure the tower is
fully setup and stable and that there is
enough people spotting whilstthe riggers
go up. If this is done, then this should
pretty much eliminate the risk of falling
from the tower.

You should review your risk assessmentifyou think it mightno longer be valid (eg following an accidentin the workplace or if there are any significantchanges to hazards, such as new work equipment
or work activities)
