At the beginning of this short clip we see 
a young boy sitting on the floor of a 
bedroom on his own with only a pen 
and paper to occupy him. We can clearly 
see that on the piece of paper he has 
drawn a child and a father looking down 
at him. The father seems to be shouting 
at him so Immediately we notice that 
something is seriously wrong within the 
house he lives in. The camera shot type that they have used is a high angle. When high angle 
shots are used in films it indicates to us that the person in shot is weak or frightened which is 
exactly what they have tried to do here. The boy carries on with his drawing on the bedroom 
floor but he stops once he hears 
a noise in the distance and runs 
into the wardrobe in front of 
him. In this image they have 
used a wide shot to imply to us 
that he is lonely in the room 
with no one else around and 
that maybe that noise signifies 
that something is wrong.
Once the young boy hides in the closet, we see a man walk into the room. The shot 
that they have used hasn’t let us see his face at this point. This could be because 
they don’t want to let the audience know who it is. We have some sort of idea that 
it is someone who looks after him so we intend that it’s the father. The lighting that 
they have used when he is tying the doors together is half and half. On the left hand 
side, where the child is hiding inside, is completely darkened out. Whereas on the 
right hand side where the father is standing, it is brighter. Having the father 
brightened up puts the main focus on him and implying to the audience that we 
need to know what is going on.
The next clip that we see is from when he is older. We see that he is now the father and he has 
a child of his own. There are many shots in which we can clearly see the hierarchy. The young 
girl is always looking up to the father and the father is always looking down at the child to show 
who’s more dominant. Also, the lighting in these shots aren't very bright. They look dull and 
boring, as if where they are living isn't a good place. The audience can see that he has clearly 
picked up what his father did to him when he was younger and this implies that children to pick 
up things fast.
At the end of the NSPCC short clip we see 
credits at the end. It simply says ‘Kids learn 
fast’. Earlier on in the short film, we saw the 
young boy 30 years later and it is clear that he 
followed on from his father. The fact that he 
was standing there shouting at his child that 
she had done something wrong just shows that 
kids can pick up habits fast. The way that this 
text is written at the end isn't to complicated. 
It simply says what will happen if you shout 
and argue in front of your young child because 
they will probably end up to grow up to be like 
you. 
Overall I think that this short film gets straight 
to the point with the message it is trying to 
get across. The use of camera shots and 
angles are good because you can easily tell 
who is weak and who is in control in this 
situation.

NSPCC analysis short film
