James J. Metcalf
I want to teach my students how
To live this life on earth,
To face its struggles and its strife
And to improve their worth.
Not just the lesson in a book,
Or how the rivers flow,
But to choose the proper path,
Wherever they may go.
To understand eternal truth,
And know right from wrong,
And gather all the beauty of
A flower and a song,
For if I help the world to grow
In wisdom and grace,
Then I feel that I have won
And I have filled my place.
And so I ask your guidance, God
That I may do my part,
For character and confidence
And happiness of heart.

Field Study 6 portfolio was created guided by the following objectives:
1. Describe the characteristics of a teacher as a person.
2. Identify the competencies that make-up a professional teacher in the classroom, in
the community and in the world.
3. Document the best practices of outstanding teachers.
This portfolio showcases the role of the teacher who plays a crucial role in the
development of the students to meet societal formation. Presented here are the
observations and interviews conducted from the different individual/personalities to
get their perspectives on the role of the teacher, the role of the school and the
counterpart of the community in attaining sustainable and quality education.

Teacher’s Responses
Our Analysis
(Values Reflected)
Our Analysis
(Philosophy Reflected)
Our Reflection
Why teach?
 To shape my student's
behavior.
 To help student
understand and
appreciate themselves.
 To make students
become very good
decision-makers and
God-fearing
individuals.
 committed
 disciplined
 motivator
 value-oriented
 Behaviorism
 This philosophy
focuses on the
modification and
shaping of student's
behavior.
 Existentialism
 This philosophy help
students understand
and appreciate
themselves as unique
individual.
 Essentialism
 This philosophy
contends that teachers
teach for the learners
to acquire basic
knowledge, skills and
values. Learners are
not only equipped
with vast amount of
knowledge but with
the values they need.
As future teachers,
it is not the
teaching that must
only considered
but it is what and
how we teach. Let
us always bear in
mind what Henry
Adam Brooks
said "Teacher
affects eternity
and we don't
know where his
influence stops."
What to teach?
The skills which students
need to face the
challenges of the 21st
century. These skills are:
1. communication
skills
2. Learning and
innovation skills
• communicator
•committed
• innovative
 Progressivism
According to this
philosophy, "Change
is the only thing that
does not change."
Thus, teachers in this
viewpoint are more
concerned with
teaching the learners
As future teachers,
we must teach our
students the skills
and knowledge
that they can use in
the future.
According to
Chinese proverb,
"It takes a village
25
3. Information, media
and technology
skills
4. Life and career
skills
the skills to cope with
change.
to raise a child."
Thus, we must
equip our students
vast of knowledge
and skills that will
gear them in the
future.
How to teach?
 By using teaching
strategies/techniques
that are tailored or fit the
students learning styles.
Strategies
-cooperative learning
-Computer-assisted
interaction,etc.
Techniques
-film showing
-simulation
-brainstorming projects
-interactive learning
-problem-solving
• demonstrator
• commitment
• enthusiasm
 Existentialism
Existentialist methods
focus on the individual
that suggests that
learning is self-paced
and self-directed.
Educators as we
are must not only
stick to one
strategy/method to
use in teaching but
use as many
applicable
methods/strategies
to the subject
matter. "Different
strokes, different
folks," this
statement suggest
that we have
diverse types of
learners inside the
classroom, thus,
the teacher must
use
diverse/different
strategies/methods.
26
Transforming student through
Engaging them to participate in real learning situation and other
Authenticpractices to
Cultivate their skills and potentials to become
Holistically -developed
Eagerly motivated and become
Responsible, competent individuals, packed with professionalism and
positive outlook in life.
27
a. My goal/s for my student is/are
As a future teacher my goal to my students is to help them develop their own skills. I
will help my students become a good citizen in the society, by treating them fairly and
inculcate in their mind that every individual as its own capability of doing things. I want
also that my students learned more in my subject taught before living, by employing
different strategies that will cater their needs.
b. What I really want to teach to my students is/are
I want to teach to my students the knowledge that they need that is anchored to my
subject taught through using varied teaching method. Imparting them good behavior to
become a better person.
c. I teach my students by
As a future teacher I will teach my students by inspiring them and motivating them to
study hard, like the saying “teacher who inspire know that teaching is like cultivating a
garden, and those who would have nothing to do with thorns must never attempt to gather
flowers”. Because if a teacher keeps on scolding or getting angry inside the classroom
even in a single matter or small mistakes of a students will lead to the students to get
bored or he/she will not attend my class.
d. What philosophy do you adhere to? Why?
Existentialism, because the main concern of existentialist is to help students
understand and appreciate themselves as a unique individuals who accept complete
responsibility for their thoughts, feelings and actions. So as a future teacher my role is to
help students define their own essence by exposing by exposing them to various paths
they take in life by creating an environment in which they freely choose their own
preferred way.
MARY GRACE V. CASTRO
REFLECTIONS
28
a. If you were a school tool (ruler, pencil, paper, etc.), what would you be? Why?
If were a school tool, I want to be a pencil
because as future teacher I am a person who were
responsible for the learning of students, I’m the one
who will nurture the lives of each students, I’m the
one who will develop their own skills so that they
will become a productive citizen in the society and
in the country as whole.
b. If you were a school furniture (table, chair, blackboard, etc.), What should you
be? Why?
If I were a school furniture I want to be a
chair because as a future teacher I’m reliable for the
learning of my students, I will provide to my
students all the knowledge that they need that is
anchored to my subject taught. Because I want them
that they were comfortable and confident enough
that had learn all the knowledge if they will proceed
to the next level.

a. My goal/s for my students is/are
to educate and to help them build and achieve their aspirations and dreams in life. I will
be their guide to discover their potentials and gifts from God. I will let them feel that they
are of great importance and that they must be given attention so as to cater their diverse
learning needs and to develop life-long learning among them.
b. What I really want to teach to my students is/are
the necessary skills and attitudes essential for their holistic development. I will teach
them how to keep abreast with technological and educational development so as to
become globally aware. I will also teach them the 21st century skills so that they may
become leaders and productive members of the developing society.
c. I will teach my students
by providing real learning experiences in a student-centered and value driven teaching-learning
environment. I will teach them by providing authentic tasks to develop and
enhance their skills so as to become life-long learners. I will make use of the recent
educational software and high technologies incorporating varied and appropriate teaching
techniques and assessment methods in teaching a certain concept so that they may learn
progressively and become globally competitive students in their generation.
What philosophy do you adhere to? Why?
I really adhere to progressivism because this educational philosophy reminds me of the
most important stakeholder in a certain school known as the center of the educative
process, the learners. As a teacher in the future, I should primarily consider the diverse
learning needs and interests of my learners. Also, I really believe that understanding them
is of great significance and involving them in the teaching- learning process is a must so
as to help them achieve life-long learning.

a. If you were a school tool (ruler, pencil, paper, etc.), what would you be? Why?
If I were a school tool, I would be a
calculator because I want to solve the
problems of my students by providing
correct answers such as acceptance, care,
love, attention and motivation to pursue
despite of their problems and struggles in
life. I will teach them on how to solve the
formula of success and lead them for a better
future.
b. If you were a school furniture (table, chair, blackboard, etc.), what should you be?
Why?
If I were a school furniture, I would
be a fluorescent lamp because I want to be
the light of my students to fulfill their
dreams in life. I will guide them so that they
may not stumble over the challenges and
trouble that may come. I will lead them for a
brighter future!

a. My goal/s for my students is/are
1. To share ideas and to practice lifelong learning with my students.
2. To inspire them to learn by their own and let them realize how important they are as
an individual. They have their own style of learning and they must use it for their own
improvement.
3. To let them apply their knowledge and experiences as their inspiration to go on
because students will learn best in their own. Letting them show their own potential
by giving them opportunity to learn.
b. What really I want to teach to my students is / are
I really want to teach my students with the information, skills and good moral attitude
they need. I want them to learn higher order thinking skills. I will teach them on how to
value things in life. I will teach them to be good individual that shows excellent attitude
towards life.
c. I will teach my students by
I will teach them through different teaching strategies that allow my students to
participate. I will facilitate them and provide them guidance that they need to get best
answer. I will consider the Multiple Intelligences through giving appropriate assessment
method. I will let my students to learn by their own pace through letting them explore and
finding by their strength and weaknesses.
d. What philosophy do you adhere to? Why?
I like progressivism because it focuses on the whole child rather than on the content or
on the teacher. In this philosophy, learners become active participants because students
are given the chance to participate in the class. It also considers the student’s interest and

a. If you were a school tool (ruler, pencil, paper, etc.), what would you be? Why?
I choose to be ballpen because I want to be a teacher that
can help my students to create their own story through
my teachings. I want to be a teacher that influences a
good value and attitude in life. I want my students to
realize how beautiful to learn and to be a good citizen in
this country. Just like the ballpen, it can contribute
(vicarious) experiences and values to the learners. It will
allow them to draw their own story ( good story) that will
make them a better person with positive outlook in life.
b. If you were a school furniture (table, chair, blackboard, etc.), what should you be?
Why?
I choose chair because I want to be a teacher that has a
strong personality in terms of my teaching through
encouraging my students to learn. I want to be a teacher who
knows how to handle conflict situation and problems regarding
to my students. I also want to be a teacher of good moral
character and I teacher who imparts knowledge not just from
books but also in real life experiences. I want to be a teacher
who shows good personality that can be a good example in my
students and at the same time to the people around me or
within the community.

a. My goal/s for my students is/are
My goals for my students are to instill them the importance of education because
it is their only asset to face the challenges in the real world, wherein they will be
competent and they will going to apply their skills to whatever field they will going to
choose. To let them appreciate that learning is more fun when there is a cooperation,
give and take relationship between me and them so that each one of them will be
motivated to study.
b. What I really want to teach to my students is/are
I really want to teach my students what I have known as a teacher, not just what
had been written in the book but with what I have experience as an individual, in that
way I can somehow influence their outlook in life. I want to teach them the values of
a good citizen for them to be responsible by showing as an example.
c. I will teach my students by
I will teach my students by using different strategies and methods that will best
suited to their learning abilities and needs. I believe that teaching will be effective and
beneficial when my students can apply what they have learned from classroom to real
world. Learning by doing.
What philosophy do you adhere to? Why?
I adhere these to Progressivism Philosophy because progressivist’s are identified
with need-based relevant curriculum that responds to students needs and that relates to
students personal lives and experiences. Progressivist’s teachers believe that one learns
by doing.

a. If you were a school tool (ruler, pencil, paper, etc.), what would you be? Why?
If I were a school tool, I would be a ruler because I
want to make my students path straight. I would be
their guidance to make their way to success. I will
not let them to go in a wrong way and “death
curves” but if these will happened I am still here,
always available and willing to guide them until they
achieve success.
b. If you were a school furniture (table, chair, blackboard, etc.), what should you be?
Why?
If I were a school furniture, I would be a filing
cabinet because I want my students knowledge
be stocked forever wherein if they will be
exposed to the real world they will always ready
to face the challenges because they already have
their stocked knowledge that no one can get it
out from them.

a. My goal/s for my students is/are:
(1.) to produce God-fearing, responsible, value-oriented and environment-friendly
students; and
(2.) to equip them with the knowledge and skills that will help them in the real world
situation.
With these two goals, I will ensure that my students will be adept in the real world of
the working field which can be more different from the four walls of the school.
b. What I really want to teach to my students is/are I want my students the value
and significance of ‘Education for All,’ wherein every student is seen as equal no
matter what race did you came from, your socio-economic status and the
tradition/belief you believe in. I will teach them the 21st century skills so as to
prepare them in the future, especially the 21st century education. “Education for
All” will greatly help me on how to transform the lives of my students-from a mere
student into a productive individual in the future.
c. I will teach my students by giving them hands-on activities so as to allow them
construct their own knowledge out of the activities given. I will give them also the
opportunity to explore and express their own ideas in order to build their confidence,
thus, hesitations of not being accepted is prevented. According to a Chinese proverb,
“It takes a village to raise a child,” thus, if we relate this to the teaching-learning
process, a teacher has a great role to play in the development of a child. Thereby, I
must be resourceful enough in providing my students the learning resources that I
will use in presenting the subject matter in order that they will be more adept in the
acquisition of the knowledge taught.
36
What philosophy do you adhere to? Why?
The philosophy that I want to adhere to is the philosophy of progressivism,
because I do believe in the progressivist’s point of view that the student’s world is the
focus and starting point of education. I do believe also on the statement, “students are
the key participants of education,” thus, we must equip our students with the knowledge
and skills that they will need in the future. As a future teacher, I will use the learning
theory of Jerome Bruner’s “Constructivist theory” wherein students construct their own
knowledge through conducting/doing activities and the teacher’s role is to facilitate/guide
the students in achieving its goal.

a. If you were a school tool (ruler, pencil, paper, etc.), what would you be? Why?
If I were a school tool, I’d like to be a paper
because the lessons that were taught by the teacher
were written in it. Everything that a teacher wanted
37
to inculcate to his/her students is written in the
paper. Giving of tests are usually paper tests wherein
the teacher checks the paper and give his/her
feedback through grades. The paper will serve as the
“writing tool” wherein one can express his/her own
idea on a particular topic through writing.
Thus, as a future teacher, I would like to be a paper-a tool/instrument through
student’s learning because whatever students have written reflects on what kind of
teacher I am.
b. If you were a school furniture (table, chair, blackboard, etc.), what should you
be? Why?
If I were a school furniture, I would
prefer to be a filing cabinet because school files are stored in there. Important
files are stored, organized and are given great care for its useful purposes.
Thus, if I am going to connect I to teaching, a filing cabinet can be compared
to the brain of the students wherein the knowledge that they have
learned will be stored, organized, and modified for future use. If
this is so, we are making the students to become responsible in organizing, selecting, and
38
modifying information being received.
On the other hand if I will relate this as to the kind of teacher I am in the future, I
will be my student’s filing cabinet wherein student’s output, projects, artworks, paper
works, etc. will be stored, organized and modified for grading purposes.

a. My goal/s for my students is/are
tomake them skillful, knowledgeable, and competent individuals. Through this, they will
be capable enough to face and participate in their real life environment.
b. What I really want to teach to my students is/are
the improvement and development of their skills because their own skill is their very key
in their real life situation.
c. I will teach my students by
enforcing and designing task that are in line with their skill through such task they’ll be
developed and much more improved in their skills.
What philosophy do you adhere to? Why?
I adhere the philosophy of constructivism because I know knowledge isn’t a thing that
can simply put into the mind of the learners by the teacher. Rather, knowledge is
constructed by the learners themselves through an active participation on activities. I
believe that learners are constructors and builders of their own knowledge and the teacher
will serve as facilitator of learning.

good teacher, I can live them with a much
positive and better learning in life.
b. If you were a school furniture, what should you be? Why?
If I were a school furniture, I’d like
to be a CABINET. I can file and arrange

different learning styles. I can treasure and
keep their work for their work is the fruit of

Classroom
Management Area
Description of
Supportive Measures
Comments of the
Effectiveness of the
Supportive Measures
Recommendations
1. Organizational
Plan
Classroom structuring is
flexible suited to
learner's needs.
Instructions were carried
out as both individual &
group depending on the
situation where
instruction is applied.
The organizational plan
of the teacher used was
effective because it
caters the
heterogeneous or
diverse types of
learners she have in the
class.
We have no
recommendations to
give since the teacher is
effective in her
organizational plan.
2. Schedule
Time allotment is based
on the subject tackled. If
need arise, the teacher
uses worksheet as a
filler to bridge the gap
of time the student
misses.
Since K+12 curriculum
uses module in guiding
the teachers in
discussing the topic,
there is an allotted time
for each topic to be
discussed which ranges
from 1-2 sessions
depending on the topic
to be discussed and its
complexity. In
addition, the teacher
utilizes fillers in
maximizing her
instructional time
which is one of the
effective ways in
achieving effective
classroom
management. Thus, we
can say the teacher is
effective.
The teacher is effective
in implementing her
schedule and in
maximizing her
instructional time, thus,
no recommendation is
needed.

3. Record Keeping
Attendance of the
students is monitored by
the teacher. Teacher
monitored students’
attendance/
performances based on
their written and actual
outputs/ activities for the
day. A portfolio is
required for every
student to show
individual progress for
grading purposes and
keeping of records.
The teacher is effective
in monitoring student's
attendance through on-track
checking of their
daily quizzes and
outputs/activities
[Paper-and-pencil test
& product-oriented/
Performance-based
assessment.
No recommendation is
needed.
4. Physical
Environment
Seats are
heterogeneously
arranged. Group of
students were assigned
for each area to monitor
and maintain cleanliness
and orderliness of the
room.
The physical is
conducive for learning.
The seating
arrangement is flexible,
thus help minimize
students’ disruptive
behaviors.
No recommendation is
needed.
5. Discipline
Classroom rules and
regulations were
provided but due to
diversity of learners,
these were not really
followed. On the other
hand, the teacher sees to
it that the students keep
on track during
discussions and
individual/group works.
The teacher must have
a firm authority inside
the classroom so as to
maintain effective
classroom
management.
Positive reinforcement
such as the use of
rewards, praises, etc.
can be established to
boost student's
motivation &
participation, thus,
minimizes disruptive
behavior.
6. Routines
There is an assigned
student a day to lead the
prayer. The teacher
recapitulates the
previous topic before
proceeding to the next
one.
The teacher is effective
in implementing
classroom routines.
No recommendation is
needed.

ANALYSIS
1. In what area of the classroom management was the teacher most effective? Which of
the supportive measures were effective? Why?
Based from the responses given by the teacher, we can say that the teacher is effective in
five areas of the classroom management except in the area of discipline because the
supportive measures established were effective for managing the classroom. However,
among these effective areas of classroom management, the most effective is the record
keeping because the teacher thoroughly monitors and records student’s progress based from
their daily performances.
2. In what are of the classroom management was the teacher least effective? Which of
the supportive measures were not effective? Why?
The teacher is least effective in the area of discipline because she cannot handle well
student’s disruptive behavior that could distract their peer’s concentration. In addition, if
these students with disruptive behavior will not be controlled, the tendency is it may affect
student’s performance and to the extent, targeted competencies may not be achieved. The
teacher has implemented classroom rules and regulations but it may not be agreed between
the teacher and the students. Therefore, students might not follow it.
45
3. Suggest more effective ways for your answer in number 2.
To improve classroom discipline, the teacher must:
 set an agreement with her students on the rules and regulations inside the
classroom;
 have a managing strategy/technique in handling student’s disruptive behavior;
 reinforce positive behaviors through rewards, praises, etc; and
 resolve minor inattentions and disruptions before they become a major problem
inside the classroom.

2. What characteristics do you have at present that can make you an effective classroom
manager?
Elaborate how these characteristics can help you.
Open-minded, as a future teacher this trait can help me to become an effective classroom manager,
because being open minded also means that I am open and willing to accept and listen the ideas and
suggestions of others, so in order to have harmonious relationship inside my classroom between
teachers-students, and students to students, as a teacher I will make rules and regulations that is being
agreed by everybody.
3. What characteristic do you have at present that can hamper you from becoming an effective
classroommanager? How can you overcome these characteristics?
Impatient, being impatient is the characteristic that I have at present that can hamper from
becoming an effective classroom manager. I can overcome this characteristic though controlling my
temper, and then consider others why they behave like that through knowing or asking the reason
behind. And of course I’ll ask guidance from God that He will give me more patients, that He will
help me control my temper.

1. Describe at least 3-5 characteristics of a teacher who can establish a well-managed

classroom?
To be able to establish a well-managed classroom, a teacher must possess the ff.
characteristics:
a. Good Facilitator .A teacher must possess this character in order to facilitate the
learning of the students inside the classroom. Facilitating student’s learning while
doing group activities will guide them in achieving their learning goals. Thus,
behavior and learning of the students are monitored.
b. Disciplined. If a teacher is well-disciplined, he/she could be able to impose
discipline inside the classroom. A disciplinarian is not synonymous to a terror
teacher. A disciplinarian teacher is a person who modifies student’s behavior
through the implementation of classroom rules and regulations agreed by the
teacher and the students.
c. Organized. A teacher should know on how to organize his/her lesson to avoid
misleading of concepts with regards to the lesson to be discussed.
d. Good Time-Manager. A teacher should know when to start or to end his/her lesson
so that the time allotted for the lesson to be discussed will be followed without
being left behind with the other concepts.
2. What characteristics do you have at present that can make you an effective
classroom manager? Elaborate how these characteristics can help you.
The characteristics that I have at present that can make me an effective classroom
are:
Being punctual-This character could help me as an effective classroom manager in
such a way that I can start my class on time and accomplished my tasks as early as I
54
can.
a. Disciplined-Since I am not yet a teacher I cannot disciplined students but the
discipline I am referring to is self-discipline. This will help me act in a tactful way
or as a ‘teacher-to-be.’
b. Organized-being organized in doing/accomplishing tasks will gear me as a future
teacher in such a way that I could also teach my students in an organized manner
which follows the time frame in discussing my subject matter.
3. What characteristics do you have at present that can hamper you from becoming
an effective classroom manager? How can you overcome these characteristics?
I think being not a good time-manager can hamper me from becoming an effective
classroom manager because I could not deliver my lesson on time and accomplished
tasks. This is usually my problem because there were times that different the subject
teachers gave their requirements at the same time, thus, I could not think properly what
to do first and when to start. Clear thinking, good decision-making and being a good
time-manager should go together so that tasks could be accomplished on time and with
organized ideas.

COMMUNITY TOUR OBSERVATION REPORT
Name of the School Observed: SAGAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
School Address: POBLACION II, SAGAY CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL
Date of Visit: SEPTEMBER 8, 2014
Locality of The School
The school is situated in Poblacion II, Sagay City, Negros Occidental. In front of the school is the
SagayBus Terminal which is just a walking distance and is beside the St. Joseph Parish Church.
Its neighboring community composes of residential houses and supermarkets/hypermarkets,
industrial and commercial firms, and other business establishments which made the city “Third
City”.
The historical landmark that can be found in the city and considered as one of its attraction
is the Legendary Siete (the train found in the City Plaza). Siete is a three – feet and six inches
gauge 4-cylinder compound 0-6-6-0 mallet that was built in 1925 by Locomotive Baldwin Works
in Philadelphia, U.S.A. painted with the name Insular Lumber Co. This is considered as the
“World’s most incredible steam survivor” as stated in the book of Colin Goratt, “Iron Dinosaurs”.
Issues/Concerns/Problems of the Community
One of the main concerns of the community is the improper waste disposal and segregation which
could be threatening to the health of the people. According to Hon. Florencio E. Ibanez, the
barangay kagawad assigned to the Environmental Concerns and Solid Waste Management, that
“there are tricycle drivers who throw their garbage everywhere they wanted to. So far there are no
reported cases in relation to peace and order, children and youth concerns, political issues and
assigned personnel (Brgy. Kagawad) in each areas to maintain its proper function. Peace and order
is maintained by the different scheduled barangay tanods in each day and celebration of fiesta is
minimized to avoid the cause of crimes and murderous acts.
58
Community Resources
The community resources that can be found in the locality are:
Library Hub – can be used for research purposes and other referential tasks.
City Health Office – provide relevant seminars for awareness regarding health issues,
and promoting health campaigns to equip the people in the community with
sufficient knowledge in self-awareness.
Parks (e.g. Lady Circle, Sagay City Plaza) – may aid in presenting the lesson
through community field trips.
City Gym – can be utilized as venue during the upholding of the school’s activities such as
Intramurals, JS Prom, Graduation, etc.
Community Assistance/Service Given by the School
The school provides assistance to the community through the participation in
different activities namely: tree planting, feeding program, coastal clean-up (e.g. Paninlo sa
Suba Program), mangrove planting/reforestation, and fiesta celebrations. In addition, the
school advocates on programs like Anti-Illegal drug campaign, feeding program, gift-giving
program especially during Christmas, parenting and child abuse campaign andClean &
Green Activities.
The school teachers serve as resource person especially in the neighboring areas like the
BJMP wherein training of prisoners with welding skills are conducted. They also contribute in
doing research studies by acting as advisers/mentors & transfer technology/livelihood skills
(e.g cookery) to the people in the community.
During town celebrations, the school band leads the parade, join the street dancing,
volunteer group maintain the cleanliness during the celebration & school offers
entertainment particularly the so-called “Lanton kag Saot” and artistic activities such as
body painting, booth display and visual arts.

ANALYSIS
1. Suggest new ways by which the school can creatively use the resources of the
community.
We could no longer suggest new ways by which the school can creatively use the
resources of the community because it has utilized the available community resources to the
best possible way. With the collaboration of the school and the community, the school has
attained its goal – to provide quality education to the students so as to transform them into a
responsible and value-oriented individual in the community.
2. How can the school address the issues/concerns/problems of the community?
Improper waste disposal/segregation is the main problem that the community is
encountering as of right now. The community in the cooperation with the school tried their
best to solve this problem by doing educational awareness/campaign in the proper disposal
and segregation of waste. In addition, truancy of students is school’s problem due to internet
gaming since the location of the school is close to nearby gaming stations. In return, the
school tried to solve this problem by linkaging different agencies like the community.
Thus, the school tries to address the issues/concerns/problems of the community & in
return, the community does the same also.
3. What possible linkages can the community and the school have?
“We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible
threads & along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes & return to us as
results”. Thus, linkages and networking with organizations is very essential in the field of
education. One of the linkages made in education is between the school & the community.
Therefore, the interconnection between the school and the community is very beneficial in
the success of educating an individual in the society. As the saying goes, “No man is an
island”, that is why, the school cannot do the educational process alone without the help
and support of different stakeholders (e.g. community, parents, public & private sectors,
60
etc.).
The possible linkages that the community and school have are:
1) the resources available in the community can be used as educational resources;
(2) the school’s counterpart during fiestas & other activities in the community, e.g. the
school band leads the parade & joining the street dance; and
(3) other activities wherein each one mutually give their counterpart towards a harmonious
community.

Reflections
1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you
learn that you might have taken for granted before?
When I go around the community I feel happy because I found out things which I have
taken for granted before, like the Brgy. Hall of Poblacion II, it have mini- library inside in
which students can stay to read.
2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?
As a future teacher, I think I will became a leader or president in our Purok in which I
will be in-charge in planning and preparing for the events during annual fiesta, like dance
sports, street dancing and etc. In this case the youth will enjoy and develop their skills and
they will not be engage in any vices.
3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students?
Through discussing to my students for example the effect of burning plastics and
improper disposal of garbage to our health and our lives as a whole. After that I will
encourage them to start cleaning up our environment such as coastal clean-up,
panglimpyosasuba,etc.
Then during Christmas day will have gift giving, to encourage them I will discuss to
them the essence of love and also through giving they become blessings to others. And
there will be more blessings to come in their lives, as what the line says, “The more you
give the more you receive.”

1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you
62
learn that you might have taken for granted before?
I feel tired in going around in the community even if I feel tired but still it is worthy
because of the new experiences that we had with my group mates. There is no thing I had
taken for granted because I had been there when I was in high school.
2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?
As a future teacher, these will be my roles in my community:
a. I will teach my students to be aware of the rules and regulations of the community and
teach them to follow it.
b. I will help my community to maintain peace and order through teaching my students
and other members of the community to be a functional and a better teacher in the
society.
c. I will set myself as a good example to the people around me to influence them the good
values and love of their own community.
d. I will support organizations that help in preventing crimes and illegal works.
3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students?
I will encourage more community participation among teachers and students through
participating in community services that are conducted in our community. I will teach my
students the importance of community services for them to be aware of it. I will lead a
community services that will help my community improve.

1. How did you feel while you we re going around the community? What things did
63
you learn that you might have taken for granted before?
As I go around the community, I feel the favorable atmosphere that the people showed
us especially the principal of Sagay National High School and the two barangay Kagawad
of the community during our interview. The people in the community have been so
cooperative in answering our queries not only on the problems and issues that they are
facing but also on the community resources that could help the students, the teachers and
school.
By roaming around, I learned that the school has its nearby community resources such
as the Library Hub, Gymnasium, Public Library, etc., that could really help for the holistic
development of every student which I had taken for granted before. I also learned that the
school and the community are interconnected in the sense that whenever the school is
holding an activity (e.g. tree planting, coastal clean-up, etc.) the community has a great part
on it.
2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?
In the future, my role in the community as a teacher is to:
a.) become a role model among all the people by keeping myself morally upright and
by not involving in immoral relations, political activities, gambling or any other
activity that could harm me, my family, the people around me and the community;
b.) act as a counselor in matters affecting the welfare of the people;
c.) lead any program that could enhance the environment and resources of the
community; and
d.) become a resource person in seminars and an active leader in any activities (e.g.
coastal clean-up, feeding program, tree planting, etc.) that could greatly help the
64
people and the community itself.
3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and
students?
I will encourage more community participation among teachers and students by
motivating them to participate in activities such as tree planting, feeding program, coastal
clean-up, etc. I will act as role model by participating in such activities and I will let them
feel that the community needs them. I will let them realize that their participation and
contribution to the community could be of great importance for the people and for the
betterment of the community. Furthermore, I will tell them that their roles are of great
significance especially in preserving the culture and the natural environment of the
community.

1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you
65
learn that you might have taken for granted before?
While going around the community I felt happy and enjoy all the view. There’s no
thing I’d taken for granted because the place was my hometown and I am familiar with the
places of Poblacion 2, thus its history is very interesting because as you can see example th
train in the public plaza, you see it as just a decoration but it has a meaningful purpose why
it is there as a center of attraction. While going around the community even if the
sunshine’s hot I enjoy a lot because I have the chance to visit and as for me to unwind.
2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?
As a future teacher, my role in the community would be an encourager to students to
be vigilant in their community so that each one of them can be helpful by avoiding chaos,
helping others by good deeds, and practice good values.
3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students?
I will encourage more community participation among teachers and students through
community services like feeding program, coastal clean-up, gift- giving wherein the teacher
and students can have a strong bonding the same time helping others.
LEONEZA D. GARCIA
BSEd IV-A
1. How did you feel while you we re going around the community? What things did you
66
learn that you might have taken for granted before?
As I go around the community, I feel as if I am one of the members in the community due
to the fact that the people there are very approachable and receive us with a very warm
welcome especially the school principal of Sagay National High School, who had given her
utmost time and effort to supply the information we need. On the other hand, the things that I
have learned that I might have taken for granted before is the responsibility that the teachers
play inside the school and in the community and the cooperation/collaboration between them
that could greatly help in improving the lives of the people living in the community. As we
have conducted the interview, I have realized these things-that the responsibility of the teacher
is so wide and complex and the school and the community should collaborate/cooperate in
achieving their goals.
2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?
As a future teacher, my role in the community is not only to serve as an educator but also
as a mentor and role model. The teacher fills a complex set of roles-some these roles are
performed at home, in school and in the community. Thus, the role of the teacher does not limit
only to the four walls of the classroom. Therefore, I must not limit the things that I can do for
my community just as what Abraham Lincoln said, “Do not think of what your country can
do for you, rather think of what you can do for your country.” This is evident during town
celebrations wherein the teachers is considered as “Purok adviser” or sometimes act as an
emcee. With this, I should possess flexible skills which could use in different situations.
3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students?
In order to persuade more community participation among teachers and students, I must
inculcate in them: the importance and the role that each one play in improving the community,
the counterpart that they contribute to the community is very essential for the community to
become successful, and the values and relationship created with the interaction with them. In
greater sense, I will encourage and motivate them to participate in tree planting, feeding
67
program, gift-giving and other activities in the community.
ROSEBEM MORALES GARGARITA

1. How did you feel while going around the community? What things did you learn that
68
you might have taken for granted before?
When I’m going around the community, I have observed different structures like the
statues of Dr. Jose Rizal in the Sagay Public Plaza, the train and even the statue of the girl
beside the Tali-ambong. I thought of all of it for display only but now I know I must not
neglect our national hero, the tragedy behind the story of the train and the girl statue which
promotes tourism here in Sagay City. Other than the plaza there are some establishments
like the Mercury Drug Store, Prince Hypermart, Terminals and Church beside the Sagay
National High School. I learned that community around the school really takes it role in
serving its community.
2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community?
As a future teacher, it came to me that my role in my community is that I will be
pursuing what is good for my community. I must not use or make any harmful act against
it, instead I must become a medium to serve the well-being of the people by teaching my
learners how to become like one.
3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students?
I will encourage more community participation among teachers and students by
letting our school activities be part of our community itself. The activities may not be
done only inside the school walls but also outside of our school. There are out-reach
program where learners and teachers finds way to give their help and support to the
people in this community.

ANALYSIS
1. From the responses of the teacher, what conclusions can you make about the
knowledge that a global teacher should have?
Based from the responses given by the teacher, we can conclude that a global teacher
must be knowledgeable enough on the country’s culture, tradition, ways of living, linguistic
and economic background where s/he will be teaching. Through this, the teacher can
communicate well to his/her students knowing their individuality. Global teachers must be
flexible in delivering his/her topic considering that each students from different parts of the
globe is different from that of the other, thus, it is a great challenge for teacher to meet the
needs of their students. In addition, teachers must possess amiable attitude towards his/her
students so as to build rapport with them.
2. From the responses of the teacher, what conclusions can you make about the skills
that a global teacher should have?
Based from the responses of the teacher, global teachers must be well-adept on his/her
subject matter taking into consideration the country’s educational system used and the foci
of their education, the ambience of the classroom must be conducive for learning
considering as well their culture and providing a classroom environment which encourages
students to become engaging and motivated in attaining learning.
3. From the responses of the teacher, what conclusions can you make about the values
that a global teacher should have?
Based from the responses of the teacher, a global teacher is not only required to be
globally-competitive but s/he must be value-oriented/value- laden as to what Mahatma
Gandhi uttered:
“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
― Mahatma Gandhi
The statement quoted by Gandhi reminds us that teachers have great influence
towards the students, thus, the values that they possess might affect what and how s/he
teaches. Henry Adam Brooks once said that, “Teachers affect eternity he can never tell
where his influence stops” thus, the values that you possess could greatly influence the
values that your students might acquire.

Be a Pro-Change Teacher
by Professor Joe Martin
Many teachers (especially experienced ones) suffer from what I call “change phobia.”
And if not carefully monitored, even new teachers can be inflicted with this the career-ending
disease. What is “change phobia” you ask? It’s exactly what you may think it is; it’s an
unhealthy fear of change.
As teachers, we can’t afford to be “change phobics”; the nature of our job dictates that we must
remain open to change (sometimes at a moment’s notice). But what if you’re not used to it or
don’t know where to start? Well, I’m glad you asked, because here’s something I want you to
try.
...continued
I want to you to do an exercise with your class I call “Teacher for a Day.” The effectiveness of
this exercise depends on the maturity level of your class (and your receptiveness). I would think
4th grade and above would work fine, but I’ll let you make the call.
Have your students take out a blank sheet a paper, and then I want you to write this question on
the board:
“If I was teacher for a day…
this is what I would do to make our class more fun and educational?”
Have each student write down at least one to three ideas on their sheet of paper and turn it in
with their names on it. It doesn’t have to be written in narrative form; it could be written as a list
of items, as long as it’s legible. This shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes.
After they turn in their papers, take them home with you, and see what ideas make the most
sense and are the most realistic to implement. Then simply determine how you can (and will)
incorporate those ideas (i.e., changes) into your lesson plan.
I must warn you to prepare yourself to be shocked by the creative (even weird) ideas you’re
going to receive from your students. Also, as an added (and optional) bonus, announce which
students came up with the best and most creative ideas, and give them some special gift, treat, or
prize.
Trust me, after you implement a few of these ideas, I guarantee you’ll reduce the chances of ever
becoming (or return to being) a “change phobic.”

In doing this portfolio, we have learned to collaborate each one’s ideas to come up
with a more organized and better ideas. We tend to possess cooperation and respect each
one’s ideas that will be included in this portfolio. Sense of unity, open-mindedness, time-management,
83
sense of responsibility, resourcefulness, and creativity are the values and
attitudes that we have developed while we are doing the different tasks/assignments
required in every episode. The answers written in this portfolio were scrutinized and
agreed by the group that satisfies the questions in the episodes. It is very time-consuming,
needs effort, money and divergent/convergent thinking that made this portfolio came into
being.
We have realized that the role of the teacher covers a wide array: teacher as a person,
teacher in the community and teacher as a global teacher. Thus, we have to educate
ourselves to provide our students with quality education considering the needs, interests,
and multiple intelligences/learning styles of the students in order to cope up with the
dynamic changes in the society.

  • 1. 1 James J. Metcalf I want to teach my students how To live this life on earth, To face its struggles and its strife And to improve their worth. Not just the lesson in a book, Or how the rivers flow, But to choose the proper path, Wherever they may go. To understand eternal truth, And know right from wrong, And gather all the beauty of A flower and a song, For if I help the world to grow In wisdom and grace, Then I feel that I have won And I have filled my place. And so I ask your guidance, God That I may do my part, For character and confidence And happiness of heart.

  • 8. 8 Field Study 6 portfolio was created guided by the following objectives: 1. Describe the characteristics of a teacher as a person. 2. Identify the competencies that make-up a professional teacher in the classroom, in the community and in the world. 3. Document the best practices of outstanding teachers. This portfolio showcases the role of the teacher who plays a crucial role in the development of the students to meet societal formation. Presented here are the observations and interviews conducted from the different individual/personalities to get their perspectives on the role of the teacher, the role of the school and the counterpart of the community in attaining sustainable and quality education. Responses made show the real life and vicarious experiences of a prospective teacher emphasizing the characteristics of a teacher as a person and as a professional. Thus, this portfolio provides us with a wide array of opportunities for self-reflection that would prepare us, the student teachers, in our future undertakings as a duly registered teacher. Educating ourselves on the kid kind of environment that we are about to face in the real world of our chosen profession.

My goal/s for my students is/are: (1.) to produce God-fearing, responsible, value-oriented and environment-friendly students; and (2.) to equip them with the knowledge and skills that will help them in the real world situation. With these two goals, I will ensure that my students will be adept in the real world of the working field which can be more different from the four walls of the school. b. What I really want to teach to my students is/are I want my students the value and significance of ‘Education for All,’ wherein every student is seen as equal no matter what race did you came from, your socio-economic status and the tradition/belief you believe in. I will teach them the 21st century skills so as to prepare them in the future, especially the 21st century education. “Education for All” will greatly help me on how to transform the lives of my students-from a mere student into a productive individual in the future. c. Thereby, I must be resourceful enough in providing my students the learning resources that I will use in presenting the subject matter in order that they will be more adept in the acquisition of the knowledge taught.
  • 36. 36 What philosophy do you adhere to? Why? The philosophy that I want to adhere to is the philosophy of progressivism, because I do believe in the progressivist’s point of view that the student’s world is the focus and starting point of education. I do believe also on the statement, “students are the key participants of education,” thus, we must equip our students with the knowledge and skills that they will need in the future. As a future teacher, I will use the learning theory of Jerome Bruner’s “Constructivist theory” wherein students construct their own knowledge through conducting/doing activities and the teacher’s role is to facilitate/guide the students in achieving its goal. • 37. a. If you were a school tool (ruler, pencil, paper, etc.), what would you be? Why? If I were a school tool, I’d like to be a paper because the lessons that were taught by the teacher were written in it. Everything that a teacher wanted 37 to inculcate to his/her students is written in the paper. Giving of tests are usually paper tests wherein the teacher checks the paper and give his/her feedback through grades. The paper will serve as the “writing tool” wherein one can express his/her own idea on a particular topic through writing. Thus, as a future teacher, I would like to be a paper-a tool/instrument through student’s learning because whatever students have written reflects on what kind of teacher I am. b. If you were a school furniture (table, chair, blackboard, etc.), what should you be? Why? If I were a school furniture, I would prefer to be a filing cabinet because school files are stored in there. Important files are stored, organized and are given great care for its useful purposes. Thus, if I am going to connect I to teaching, a filing cabinet can be compared to the brain of the students wherein the knowledge that they have learned will be stored, organized, and modified for future use. If

I will teach my students by enforcing and designing task that are in line with their skill through such task they’ll be developed and much more improved in their skills. • 42. 42 Classroom Management Area Description of Supportive Measures Comments of the Effectiveness of the Supportive Measures Recommendations 1. Organizational Plan Classroom structuring is flexible suited to learner's needs. Instructions were carried out as both individual & group depending on the situation where instruction is applied. The organizational plan of the teacher used was effective because it caters the heterogeneous or diverse types of learners she have in the class. We have no recommendations to give since the teacher is effective in her organizational plan. 2. Schedule Time allotment is based on the subject tackled. If need arise, the teacher uses worksheet as a filler to bridge the gap of time the student misses. Since K+12 curriculum uses module in guiding the teachers in discussing the topic, there is an allotted time for each topic to be discussed which ranges from 1-2 sessions depending on the topic to be discussed and its complexity. In addition, the teacher utilizes fillers in maximizing her instructional time which is one of the effective ways in achieving effective classroom management. Thus, we can say the teacher is effective. The teacher is effective in implementing her schedule and in maximizing her instructional time, thus, no recommendation is needed. • 43. 43 3. Record Keeping Attendance of the students is monitored by the teacher. Teacher monitored students’ attendance/ performances based on their written and actual outputs/ activities for the day. A portfolio is required for every student to show individual progress for grading purposes and keeping of records. The teacher is effective in monitoring student's attendance through on-track checking of their daily quizzes and outputs/activities [Paper-and-pencil test & product-oriented/ Performance-based assessment. No recommendation is needed. 4. Physical Environment Seats are heterogeneously arranged. Group of students were assigned for each area to monitor and maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the room. The physical is conducive for learning. The seating arrangement is flexible, thus help minimize students’ disruptive behaviors. No recommendation is needed. 5. Discipline Classroom rules and regulations were provided but due to diversity of learners, these were not really followed. On the other hand, the teacher sees to it that the students keep on track during discussions and individual/group works. The teacher must have a firm authority inside the classroom so as to maintain effective classroom management. Positive reinforcement such as the use of rewards, praises, etc. can be established to boost student's motivation & participation, thus, minimizes disruptive behavior. 6. Routines There is an assigned student a day to lead the prayer. The teacher recapitulates the previous topic before proceeding to the next one. The teacher is effective in implementing classroom routines. No recommendation is needed.
  • 44. 44 ANALYSIS 1. In what area of the classroom management was the teacher most effective? Which of the supportive measures were effective? Why? Based from the responses given by the teacher, we can say that the teacher is effective in five areas of the classroom management except in the area of discipline because the supportive measures established were effective for managing the classroom. However, among these effective areas of classroom management, the most effective is the record keeping because the teacher thoroughly monitors and records student’s progress based from their daily performances. 2. In what are of the classroom management was the teacher least effective? Which of the supportive measures were not effective? Why? The teacher is least effective in the area of discipline because she cannot handle well student’s disruptive behavior that could distract their peer’s concentration. In addition, if these students with disruptive behavior will not be controlled, the tendency is it may affect student’s performance and to the extent, targeted competencies may not be achieved. The teacher has implemented classroom rules and regulations but it may not be agreed between the teacher and the students. Therefore, students might not follow it.
  • 45. 45 3. Suggest more effective ways for your answer in number 2. To improve classroom discipline, the teacher must:  set an agreement with her students on the rules and regulations inside the classroom;  have a managing strategy/technique in handling student’s disruptive behavior;  reinforce positive behaviors through rewards, praises, etc; and  resolve minor inattentions and disruptions before they become a major problem inside the classroom.

TUPAS COOPERATING SCHOOL: SAGAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL TARGET At the end of this episode, we will gain competence in identifying possible linkages between the school and the communities, particularly those that will help attain curricular goals.
  • 57. 57 COMMUNITY TOUR OBSERVATION REPORT Name of the School Observed: SAGAY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL School Address: POBLACION II, SAGAY CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL Date of Visit: SEPTEMBER 8, 2014 Locality of The School The school is situated in Poblacion II, Sagay City, Negros Occidental. In front of the school is the SagayBus Terminal which is just a walking distance and is beside the St. Joseph Parish Church. Its neighboring community composes of residential houses and supermarkets/hypermarkets, industrial and commercial firms, and other business establishments which made the city “Third City”. The historical landmark that can be found in the city and considered as one of its attraction is the Legendary Siete (the train found in the City Plaza). Siete is a three – feet and six inches gauge 4-cylinder compound 0-6-6-0 mallet that was built in 1925 by Locomotive Baldwin Works in Philadelphia, U.S.A. painted with the name Insular Lumber Co. This is considered as the “World’s most incredible steam survivor” as stated in the book of Colin Goratt, “Iron Dinosaurs”. Issues/Concerns/Problems of the Community One of the main concerns of the community is the improper waste disposal and segregation which could be threatening to the health of the people. According to Hon. Florencio E. Ibanez, the barangay kagawad assigned to the Environmental Concerns and Solid Waste Management, that “there are tricycle drivers who throw their garbage everywhere they wanted to. So far there are no reported cases in relation to peace and order, children and youth concerns, political issues and assigned personnel (Brgy. Kagawad) in each areas to maintain its proper function. Peace and order is maintained by the different scheduled barangay tanods in each day and celebration of fiesta is minimized to avoid the cause of crimes and murderous acts.
  • 58. 58 Community Resources The community resources that can be found in the locality are: Library Hub – can be used for research purposes and other referential tasks. City Health Office – provide relevant seminars for awareness regarding health issues, and promoting health campaigns to equip the people in the community with sufficient knowledge in self-awareness. Parks (e.g. Lady Circle, Sagay City Plaza) – may aid in presenting the lesson through community field trips. City Gym – can be utilized as venue during the upholding of the school’s activities such as Intramurals, JS Prom, Graduation, etc. Community Assistance/Service Given by the School The school provides assistance to the community through the participation in different activities namely: tree planting, feeding program, coastal clean-up (e.g. Paninlo sa Suba Program), mangrove planting/reforestation, and fiesta celebrations. In addition, the school advocates on programs like Anti-Illegal drug campaign, feeding program, gift-giving program especially during Christmas, parenting and child abuse campaign andClean & Green Activities. The school teachers serve as resource person especially in the neighboring areas like the BJMP wherein training of prisoners with welding skills are conducted. They also contribute in doing research studies by acting as advisers/mentors & transfer technology/livelihood skills (e.g cookery) to the people in the community. During town celebrations, the school band leads the parade, join the street dancing, volunteer group maintain the cleanliness during the celebration & school offers entertainment particularly the so-called “Lanton kag Saot” and artistic activities such as body painting, booth display and visual arts.
  • 59. 59 ANALYSIS 1. Suggest new ways by which the school can creatively use the resources of the community. We could no longer suggest new ways by which the school can creatively use the resources of the community because it has utilized the available community resources to the best possible way. With the collaboration of the school and the community, the school has attained its goal – to provide quality education to the students so as to transform them into a responsible and value-oriented individual in the community. 2. How can the school address the issues/concerns/problems of the community? Improper waste disposal/segregation is the main problem that the community is encountering as of right now. The community in the cooperation with the school tried their best to solve this problem by doing educational awareness/campaign in the proper disposal and segregation of waste. In addition, truancy of students is school’s problem due to internet gaming since the location of the school is close to nearby gaming stations. In return, the school tried to solve this problem by linkaging different agencies like the community. Thus, the school tries to address the issues/concerns/problems of the community & in return, the community does the same also. 3. What possible linkages can the community and the school have? “We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads & along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes & return to us as
  • 60. results”. Thus, linkages and networking with organizations is very essential in the field of education. One of the linkages made in education is between the school & the community. Therefore, the interconnection between the school and the community is very beneficial in the success of educating an individual in the society. As the saying goes, “No man is an island”, that is why, the school cannot do the educational process alone without the help and support of different stakeholders (e.g. community, parents, public & private sectors, 60 etc.). The possible linkages that the community and school have are: 1) the resources available in the community can be used as educational resources; (2) the school’s counterpart during fiestas & other activities in the community, e.g. the school band leads the parade & joining the street dance; and (3) other activities wherein each one mutually give their counterpart towards a harmonious community.
  • 61. 61 Reflections 1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you learn that you might have taken for granted before? When I go around the community I feel happy because I found out things which I have taken for granted before, like the Brgy. Hall of Poblacion II, it have mini- library inside in which students can stay to read. 2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community? As a future teacher, I think I will became a leader or president in our Purok in which I will be in-charge in planning and preparing for the events during annual fiesta, like dance sports, street dancing and etc. In this case the youth will enjoy and develop their skills and they will not be engage in any vices. 3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students? Through discussing to my students for example the effect of burning plastics and improper disposal of garbage to our health and our lives as a whole. After that I will encourage them to start cleaning up our environment such as coastal clean-up, panglimpyosasuba, etc. Then during Christmas day will have gift giving, to encourage them I will discuss to them the essence of love and also through giving they become blessings to others. And there will be more blessings to come in their lives, as what the line says, “The more you give the more you receive.” MARY GRACE V. CASTRO BSEd IV-A
  • 62. 1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you 62 learn that you might have taken for granted before? As a future teacher, these will be my roles in my community: a. I will teach my students to be aware of the rules and regulations of the community and teach them to follow it. b. • 63. 1. How did you feel while you we re going around the community? What things did 63 you learn that you might have taken for granted before? As I go around the community, I feel the favorable atmosphere that the people showed us especially the principal of Sagay National High School and the two barangay Kagawad of the community during our interview. The people in the community have been so cooperative in answering our queries not only on the problems and issues that they are facing but also on the community resources that could help the students, the teachers and school. By roaming around, I learned that the school has its nearby community resources such as the Library Hub, Gymnasium, Public Library, etc., that could really help for the holistic development of every student which I had taken for granted before. I also learned that the school and the community are interconnected in the sense that whenever the school is holding an activity (e.g. tree planting, coastal clean-up, etc.) the community has a great part on it. 2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community? In the future, my role in the community as a teacher is to: a.) become a role model among all the people by keeping myself morally upright and by not involving in immoral relations, political activities, gambling or any other activity that could harm me, my family, the people around me and the community; b.) act as a counselor in matters affecting the welfare of the people; c.) lead any program that could enhance the environment and resources of the community; and
  • 64. d.) become a resource person in seminars and an active leader in any activities (e.g. coastal clean-up, feeding program, tree planting, etc.) that could greatly help the 64 people and the community itself. 3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students? I will encourage more community participation among teachers and students by motivating them to participate in activities such as tree planting, feeding program, coastal clean-up, etc. I will act as role model by participating in such activities and I will let them feel that the community needs them. I will let them realize that their participation and contribution to the community could be of great importance for the people and for the betterment of the community. Furthermore, I will tell them that their roles are of great significance especially in preserving the culture and the natural environment of the community. ARJEL ARQUILOS DIONGSON BSEd IV-A
  • 65. 1. How did you feel while you were going around the community? What things did you 65 learn that you might have taken for granted before? While going around the community I felt happy and enjoy all the view. There’s no thing I’d taken for granted because the place was my hometown and I am familiar with the places of Poblacion 2, thus its history is very interesting because as you can see example th train in the public plaza, you see it as just a decoration but it has a meaningful purpose why it is there as a center of attraction. While going around the community even if the sunshine’s hot I enjoy a lot because I have the chance to visit and as for me to unwind. 2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community? As a future teacher, my role in the community would be an encourager to students to be vigilant in their community so that each one of them can be helpful by avoiding chaos, helping others by good deeds, and practice good values. 3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students? I will encourage more community participation among teachers and students through community services like feeding program, coastal clean-up, gift- giving wherein the teacher and students can have a strong bonding the same time helping others. LEONEZA D. GARCIA BSEd IV-A
  • 66. 1. How did you feel while you we re going around the community? What things did you 66 learn that you might have taken for granted before? As I go around the community, I feel as if I am one of the members in the community due to the fact that the people there are very approachable and receive us with a very warm welcome especially the school principal of Sagay National High School, who had given her utmost time and effort to supply the information we need. On the other hand, the things that I have learned that I might have taken for granted before is the responsibility that the teachers play inside the school and in the community and the cooperation/collaboration between them that could greatly help in improving the lives of the people living in the community. As we have conducted the interview, I have realized these things-that the responsibility of the teacher is so wide and complex and the school and the community should collaborate/cooperate in achieving their goals. 2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community? As a future teacher, my role in the community is not only to serve as an educator but also as a mentor and role model. The teacher fills a complex set of roles-some these roles are performed at home, in school and in the community. Thus, the role of the teacher does not limit only to the four walls of the classroom. Therefore, I must not limit the things that I can do for my community just as what Abraham Lincoln said, “Do not think of what your country can do for you, rather think of what you can do for your country.” This is evident during town celebrations wherein the teachers is considered as “Purok adviser” or sometimes act as an emcee. With this, I should possess flexible skills which could use in different situations.
  • 67. 3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students? In order to persuade more community participation among teachers and students, I must inculcate in them: the importance and the role that each one play in improving the community, the counterpart that they contribute to the community is very essential for the community to become successful, and the values and relationship created with the interaction with them. In greater sense, I will encourage and motivate them to participate in tree planting, feeding 67 program, gift-giving and other activities in the community. ROSEBEM MORALES GARGARITA BSEd IV-A
  • 68. 1. How did you feel while going around the community? What things did you learn that 68 you might have taken for granted before? When I’m going around the community, I have observed different structures like the statues of Dr. Jose Rizal in the Sagay Public Plaza, the train and even the statue of the girl beside the Tali-ambong. I thought of all of it for display only but now I know I must not neglect our national hero, the tragedy behind the story of the train and the girl statue which promotes tourism here in Sagay City. Other than the plaza there are some establishments like the Mercury Drug Store, Prince Hypermart, Terminals and Church beside the Sagay National High School. I learned that community around the school really takes it role in serving its community. 2. As a future teacher, what do you think will be your role in the community? As a future teacher, it came to me that my role in my community is that I will be pursuing what is good for my community. I must not use or make any harmful act against it, instead I must become a medium to serve the well-being of the people by teaching my learners how to become like one. 3. How will you encourage more community participation among teachers and students? I will encourage more community participation among teachers and students by letting our school activities be part of our community itself. The activities may not be done only inside the school walls but also outside of our school. There are out-reach program where learners and teachers finds way to give their help and support to the people in this community. CARA D. LACHICA

  • 81. 81 Be a Pro-Change Teacher by Professor Joe Martin Many teachers (especially experienced ones) suffer from what I call “change phobia.” And if not carefully monitored, even new teachers can be inflicted with this the career-ending disease. What is “change phobia” you ask? It’s exactly what you may think it is; it’s an unhealthy fear of change. As teachers, we can’t afford to be “change phobics”; the nature of our job dictates that we must remain open to change (sometimes at a moment’s notice). But what if you’re not used to it or don’t know where to start? Well, I’m glad you asked, because here’s something I want you to try. ...continued I want to you to do an exercise with your class I call “Teacher for a Day.” The effectiveness of this exercise depends on the maturity level of your class (and your receptiveness). I would think 4th grade and above would work fine, but I’ll let you make the call. Have your students take out a blank sheet a paper, and then I want you to write this question on the board: “If I was teacher for a day… this is what I would do to make our class more fun and educational?” Have each student write down at least one to three ideas on their sheet of paper and turn it in with their names on it. It doesn’t have to be written in narrative form; it could be written as a list of items, as long as it’s legible. This shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. After they turn in their papers, take them home with you, and see what ideas make the most sense and are the most realistic to implement. Then simply determine how you can (and will) incorporate those ideas (i.e., changes) into your lesson plan. I must warn you to prepare yourself to be shocked by the creative (even weird) ideas you’re going to receive from your students. Also, as an added (and optional) bonus, announce which students came up with the best and most creative ideas, and give them some special gift, treat, or prize. Trust me, after you implement a few of these ideas, I guarantee you’ll reduce the chances of ever becoming (or return to being) a “change phobic.” Joe Martin is an award-winning national speaker, author, professor, and educational consultant. • 83. In doing this portfolio, we have learned to collaborate each one’s ideas to come up with a more organized and better ideas. We tend to possess cooperation and respect each one’s ideas that will be included in this portfolio. Sense of unity, open-mindedness, time-management, 83 sense of responsibility, resourcefulness, and creativity are the values and attitudes that we have developed while we are doing the different tasks/assignments required in every episode. The answers written in this portfolio were scrutinized and agreed by the group that satisfies the questions in the episodes. It is very time-consuming, needs effort, money and divergent/convergent thinking that made this portfolio came into being. We have realized that the role of the teacher covers a wide array: teacher as a person, teacher in the community and teacher as a global teacher. Thus, we have to educate ourselves to provide our students with quality education considering the needs, interests, and multiple intelligences/learning styles of the students in order to cope up with the dynamic changes in the society.
