I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the student is expected to:
identify word meaning through synonyms;
deduce author’s purpose; and;
react critically to what is read.
II. Subject Matter

Springboard: Friends by Fr. Bob Garon
Materials: Handout, picture
III. Procedure
A. Pre-reading
1. Motivation
The teacher will show a picture of her with her friends and ask the student if
she has friends.
2. Vocabulary Development
The student will make a list of words that she can associate with friends.
B. During-reading
The teacher will give the student the copy of the selection entitled Friends by Fr.
Bob Garon and the student will read it and determine the author’s purpose in
writing it afterwards.
C. Post-reading
The teacher will ask the student the ff. questions for comprehension check:
1. Why do teenagers want to have friends?
2. What is meant by "They become the teenager's bridge from the home to the
outside world"?
3. Do you agree that friends strongly influence their peers? What influence do
friends have on their peers?
4. Why is it important for teenagers to choose their friends well?
5. What does the writer want to tell teenagers about friendship?
