Biology Chapter 5 Lesson 1

Classification – used in
science to organize things to
make it easier to study
them.
Taxonomy – is the study of
classification

Carolus Linnaeus – credited
with the modern day
classification system. It is
based on physical similarities.
7 Taxonomic categories:
Kingdom
   Phylum
      Class
         Order
            Family
               Genus
                   Species
Mneumonic

King Phillip cut open five
green snakes.
Five Kingdoms:

Monera – bacteria
Protista – Protozoans and Algae
Fungi – mushrooms, mold,mildew
Plantae –plants
Animalia – animals both
vertebrates and invertebrates
Linnaeus also developed a
binomial (two part)
nomenclature (name) to
identify a particular type of
organism.

Called the scientific name.
Scientific Name
Uses the genus and species
Rules:
1. Latin or latinized
2. Italics or underlined
3. First word capitalized, second
   word is not
Scientific Name

Ex. Rosa chinesia (a rose)
Scientific Name
Ex. Rosa chinensis (the
Chinese rose)
Scientific Classification

• is always changing
•Currently the most accepted has
included an 8th classification the
Domain. This is more general
than a Kingdom.
Scientific Classification
Currently there are 3 Domains
broken down by cell type:

1. Domain Bacteria –
prokaryotes including some
bacteria from Kingdom Monera
Scientific Classification
2. Domain Archaea –
prokaryotes; includes the
Archaeabacteria that live in
extreme conditions of cold and
hot. Other part of Monera.
Scientific Classification
3. Domain Eukarya – Eukaryotes
that include the kingdom
Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and
Animalia.
