Career Education Officer Program
The Center initiated the Career Education Officer (CEO) program, which selects students to become
ambassadors for and supports the Experiential Learning & Career Development Center (ELCDC). The CEOs
market and promote the Center’s services and events to students, as well as train their peers on proper resume
building, interview techniques, and other forms of professional development.
NCDOT
The Center hosted a professional development
workshop sponsored by the North Carolina
Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Beginning
with a keynote speech from North Carolina Secretary
of Transportation Tony Tata, the students spent the
day learning about NCDOT’s career opportunities,
using social media for job hunting and how to create
a professional resume. More than 50 student interns
from historically black colleges and Universities
(HBCUs) across North Carolina, including four
students from Shaw University, participated in the event. The interns participate in one of two NCDOT
internship programs. The first is the HBCU/ Minority Institutions of Higher Education (MIHE) Internship
Program, a 10-week summer program for students attending North Carolina HBCUs. The second program, the
Business Research Summer Internship, allows students to work with and assess NCDOT’s certified minority,
disadvantaged and women-owned firms. Both internships provide stipends of up to $3,500 for participating
students..
Charlotte School of Law Pre Law Academy
Seven students were selected to attend the Charlotte School of Law Pre Law
Academy, a 12-day residential legal camp. Students who successfully complete
the program are guaranteed admission into the Charlotte School of Law, or any
other law school within the InfiLaw Consortium, including the Florida Coastal
School of Law and the Arizona Summit Law School. Four of the seven students
are now attending Charlotte School of Law.
Career Closet
The Center has opened the Shaw University Career Closet, which serves as a resource of new and gently used
business casual and business professional attire available, free of charge, to all currently enrolled Shaw
University students. The Career Closet assists students with their professional dress needs whether it may be
for an interview, a career fair, office visit, or on the job. This service is provided to our students free of charge,

and they do not have to return any of the clothing, it is theirs to keep. We currently receive donations from the
community, staff, faculty, and alumni, and local consignment shops.
National Leadership and Success Society, Sigma Alpha Pi
Sigma Alpha Pi is a national Leadership Honor Society (3.0+ GPA or member of Honors College) which build
leadership development, and professional development, and peer-to-peer networking for students around the
world. There are several avenues the students must take before becoming an inducted member, which include,
attending the Leadership Training Day, attend speaker events, and participating in the success networking team.
We sent out over 300 invitations. Our first scheduled program is slated for October 7, 2014. The Shaw
University chapter was awarded a $2800 grant, which pays for the first year of organization chapter dues.
YMCA
Camp High Hopes
Created a partnership with YMCA’s Camp High Hopes program which allowed middle and high school
students to camp on Shaw University’s campus from June 16th
through August 1st
. The partnership allows
University students to have preferred application status when they apply for future internships or volunteer
services.
Y-Achievers
Through YMCA partnership, Shaw University students will be participating in the upcoming year for the Y-
Achievers program as volunteers, interns, and mentors.
Tru Access Career Boot camp
The Center partnered with Tru Access, the YMCA, and Student Activities to host a two part career boot camp
series, the first event to take place in November, the second, in February, in preparation for Professional
Development Week, February 9-12, 2015

interview techniques, reviewing peer resumes, and presenting career development workshops on Saturday,
