Understanding The Emotional Aspects Of Arthritis
1. Understanding The Emotional Aspects Of Arthritis
Everyone knows that arthritis affects the physical health of the sufferer, but many disregard the
emotional aspect of the disease. It can really be difficult for many people who are diagnosed with
arthritis to cope with the many problems that come with it. Below, you will find information about the
different emotions that are tied to living a life with arthritis.
Obviously, you are going to feel concerned about how the arthritis is affecting you. You should. If you
are not concerned with how it is going to affect your life, you will not have the desire to do something
to treat it. Treating it can help you live a much more comfortable life doing the things that you love.
You may feel fear related to not knowing how bad your arthritis is going to get and how quickly it will
get worse. Staying in touch with your doctor and allowing him to monitor the progression of the
disease will help him find treatments that will slow the arthritis.
You are likely going to deny that you now have physical limitations. It can be very difficult to learn that
you are no longer able to do some of the things that you love to do. Many times, this comes hardest
for those who have arthritis in the hands.
You will feel frustrated about the changes that you must make in your life. It is not easy for people to
change, especially when it is forced on them because their body just will not work the way that it used
to. Allow yourself to be frustrated, but do not allow your frustrations to ruin the relationships with the
people you love.
Go ahead and get mad! You are allowed to be mad that you cannot do the things you want to do. If
you keep all of that anger bottled up, it will consume you. This is one of the easiest ways to allow the
disease to take over your life. You must find new things that you can do so you are not so angry
about the things that you cannot do.
You may even feel hopeless because you do not have any control over this disease. Sure, you can
take some steps to decrease your discomforts, but you have no way to make it go away. You should
2. find someone to talk to about this feeling because it can quickly lead to depression.
Finally, you must gain the feeling of acceptance. You can still live a full life while dealing with arthritis.
There is no reason to allow it to have power over you and keep you from living your life. If need be,
find a local support group so you have people to share your feelings with. If you get them all out, you
will feel much better about life.
You may be fortunate enough to not experience every emotion that was listed here, but even the
ones you do can change your life. Allow yourself to experience these emotions, but do not allow them
to rule your life.
