4. The word 'fashion' has been defined in a variety of ways over the years.
Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear,
accessories, makeup, body, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often
constant trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles
in behavior and the newest creations of textile designers.
"Fashion is the most powerful art there is. It's movement, design, and
architecture all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we'd like to be

5. Today, most people in Europe can afford to
change their clothes every day, and most
people feel free to wear the clothes they like -
pants, skirts, saris etc. But recent laws in
Europe have been trying to force people to
show their faces on the street

6. Changes in European fashion
During 18th Century:
Men: trousers w. perfect tailoring; linen; coats cutaway in the front
w. long tails; cloaks; hats; the Dandy; Majo: short jacket
Women: hats, turbans, gloves, jewelry, small handbags - reticules,
shawls, handkerchiefs; parasols; fans; Maja: layered skirt
7. Men: linen shirts w. high collars; tall hats; hair: short and wigless, à la Titus
or Bedford Crop, but often with some long locks left coming down.
Women: short hair; white hats; trim, feathers, lace; Egyptian and Eastern
influences in jewelry and apparel; hair: masses of curls, sometimes pulled
back into a bun
8. Women: dress waist lines began to drop; elaborate hem and neckline
decoration; cone-shaped skirts; sleeves pinched
Men: overcoats/greatcoats w. fur of velvet collars; the Garrick
coat;Wellington boots; jockey boots
9. Even though European men had started wearing pants in the early
1800s, women in Europe didn't really start to wear pants until
about 100 years later, in the early 1900s. Slowly more and more
women started to wear pants. People began to wear less cloth.
Women started to wear short skirts instead of long skirts. Men
wore tighter pants and jackets.

11. Fashion of the 21st Century is used to express
one’s self. Many people use their clothes to
express a mood, feeling, attitude or way of life.
The fashion of the time is eccentric and makes a
statement. Clothing and accessories are both
ways that men, women and children show where
they came from and how they were raised.
Fashion of the century is used to tell a story and
helps people express themselves.

15. The United States is one of the leading countries in
the fashion design industry, American fashion is
eclectic and predominantly informal. While
Americans' diverse cultural roots are reflected in
their clothing, particularly those of recent
immigrants, cowboy hats, boots and leather
motorcycle jackets are emblematic of specifically
American styles. New York City and Los Angeles are
the centers of America's fashion industry. They are
considered leading fashion capitals.
16. During 1880s-1900s:
At this time, clothes were designed for women to wear in the
workplace and to accommodate an increasing interest in outdoor
activities for women. By 1880, the skirt was very narrow, and the back
of the dress had only slight padding. The woman in the early 1880s
image below wears a quite narrow skirt, and one can just make out
the gathered material at the back.
17. Throughout the 20th century cross-cultural and historical
influences had a profound impact upon fashion design. The styles,
designs and materials of other times and cultures became more
accessible to designers as improved travel and communications
enabled continents to be crossed with ease.
19. 21st century fashion embraces unique styles. There has
been less and less clothing that is appropriate. Girls feel
a need to show off their bodies to look attractive. Just
take Lady Gaga as an example. Her Madonna inspired
fashion defiantly did not conform to the popular styles.
Other hip hop arrest like Iggy Azalea and Minaj also have
their own personal contribution to fashion and in
different communities as well (“Changes is Style and
Changes in Fashion”).

22. "Fashion is not something that
exists in dresses only. Fashion is in
the sky, in the street, fashion has to
do with ideas, the way we live, what
is happening"
