The document summarizes Rahwa Mahari's work on various tasks for an A2 Media Studies course. It discusses analyzing trailers to understand their effectiveness, creating a synopsis and changing the storyboard for a horror film trailer, researching conventions of the horror genre used in films like Scream and Insidious, targeting an audience of teens and young adults, applying techniques like close-ups and lighting to build atmosphere, crafting mise-en-scene, using practical and post-production elements like costumes, props, sound, and editing the trailer. Rahwa took responsibility for various production roles along with classmates and provides a production schedule and comparisons of the original and new storyboards.
2. TASK ONE The research enabled me to look at
On our first lesson, we were given the task to pick a trailers, from a media students
trailer which we most thought was effective. prospective- allowing me to
Then we had to analyse it and say what we liked identify what made the trailer
most about it: effective. This was important
because it helped me notice
the themes and conventions of
a trailer which were used to
capture the viewers attention
e.g. Close ups, intertextual
titles and themes /genres of
romance and action.
Which overall gave me a good
understanding of how to
outline the teaser trailer e.g.
Speed- starting slow and the
increasing speed to increase
tension to a climax.
3. TASK TWO
Brief synopsis of individual film: family move in to new house-daughter Arael is
haunted by a dead girl who previously got murdered in the house; after being
constantly attacked, Arael confronts dead girl- Arael, finding out her story, tries to
find out Luefiea’s murderer. Extreme religious next door neighbour Iago- is the
character portrayed in a positive way, but is cruel and is the one who killed
Luefiea.
Representation and symbolism is key in this movie: the name Iago is cross
reference to Iago from Othello, Arael means lion of God, while Luefiea is
associated with evil. The element of representing a character in a different light,
adds the suspense theme to the movie. Overall the movie is a horror, haunted
house, supernatural movie.
However because my storyboard was picked randomly to be used for the trailer
teaser, we as a group had to change the storyboard and storyline : were still using
the part with the family moving in and were still sticking to the genres of horror
and haunted house; but the house is haunted by an evil spirit- masked. the evil spirit
makes girl paranoid and it keeps provoking her till she kills herself because no one
believes her. The house is associated with the illuminate that’s why the evil spirit
lives in the house.
4. TASK TWO
The three horror movies:
Scream, Insidious and Carrie-
were effective in projecting
the genre of the movie in the
teaser trailers. All three teaser
trailers influenced the groups
teaser trailer, through the use
of the classic opening- long
angle shot of the house or
hall (illustrating that it is
going to take place in
setting). All three movies are
haunted house and horror
genres too, so they were our
guidelines to making our
teaser trailer.
5. TASK THREE
Through the creation of suspense and mystery, I want the audience to question the character’s next move. For
audience to get panicked, scared and to relate to the character’s. Moreover for the audience mind to be
provoked to new thoughts/beliefs; to invoke audiences fears. Moreover 15-28 are most likely to want to
expose their minds to horror/mystery genre movies.
The target audience are teenagers and young adults from the age 15 to 28. As mostly couples go watch scary
movies on a date (guy expecting to comfort the girl when she’s scared 0.o). However more males are
expected to watch a haunted, horror genre movie because stereotypically are more willing to watch scary
movies to convey that they are brave and to compete with one another. Moreover from the group
Questionnaire Research Results, most of the people said they would go to cinema more often when asked
verbally to go by friends. And it is mostly young adults and teenagers who go in groups. Moreover People
aged 15-28 are more exposed to technology, so they are more likely to be familiar with the theme illuminati.
6. TASK FOUR TO SIX
The classic codes and conventions of a horror movies containing the elements of haunted house
and isolated setting, we are using it in our teaser trailers e.g. Through out the trailer there is only
one victim character being violated and tortured by the villain. We did this to connote an
isolated setting, we did this to create sympathy from the viewer with main character. In the shot
we illustrate blood on the mirror to connote to the viewer that the victims life is under threat.
The task helped me observe and
understand the techniques used in
many conventional -classic horror
movies. And I highlighted these
techniques (which were applied to
our teaser trailer) on the right. This
was one of the first tasks we were
told to do in class, to understand our
project much more.
7. TASK SIX TO EIGHT Long shot:
this is where we see the victim in relation to her

is all going to take place there.
We used flash in a dark room, to create a
contrasting image, which we hoped would portray
or symbolise atmosphere being unbalanced.
Moreover lighting was used heavily to create a
disoriented Mise-en-scene and atmosphere.
Furthermore lighting was used to portray isolation
of the character e.g. Dark room, with the only light
being on the victims face.
8. TASK SIX
CUSTOME & MISE-
TO EIGHT
EN-SCENE
This is the bedroom clip, we tried to create a
realistic Mise-en-scene for a teenager, so we
used the magazine, phone and teddy bears as
props. Moreover we filmed in a group's sisters
bedroom; so the representation of a teenagers
room was accurately portrayed.
Another prop that we used is the mask and red
contact lenses; we used it as a prop, because it
connoted and fear of the unknown.
We used lipstick to draw on the mirror, to make
it look like blood.
We used knifes, since it was a conventional prop
used in horror movies, we wanted our trailer teaser to
have some of the classic elements that a horror
movie has.
9. Mise-en-scene: denotation if girl in the bathroom, denoted
from an over shoulder shot. Conventional setting of horror
movies; intertextuality from What lies beneath- bathroom
scene.
We filmed this shot from an over shoulder shot to build
suspense and to create fear of something watching over the
girl.
We changed the clock to 3 am, as our movie is about
illuminate and evil, and since 3am is believed to be in the
biblical terms in 3:00 to 4:00 is when jesus died in the
cross, it turns out that's when the negativity of evil began to
grow, moreover it is an intertextual from most horror movies
e.g. Exorcism.
10. CHARACTERS
THE PROPS WE USED: GLOVES, MASK
AND A BLACK HOOD FOR THE MALE
CHARACTER. FOR FEMALE CHARACTER
WE USED KETCHUP- FOR BLOOD
EFFECT AND BLACK COAT. THE
LOCATION OF THE SHOTS IS OUTSIDE
THE DRAMA ROOM, WERE THEY HAD A
BLACK WALL- WHICH WE NEEDED TO
MAKE THE PICTURES LOOK
PROFESSIONAL AND CLEAR- SO WE
COULD USE THE PICTURES FOR THE
MAGAZINE, SO THAT THE AUDIENCE
CAN BE FAMILIAR WITH CHARACTER
WHEN THEY SEE THE MAGAZINE. WE
USED A LOT OF HANDHELD CAMERA
SHOTS TO ILLUSTRATE CHARACTERS
FEARS.
11. SOUND
We as a group are going to emphasis on sound because
the surveys we gave out illustrated to us that the most
effective part of a trailer teaser and a horror film, is
sound. The target audience found sound, most effective
because of the dynamic of sound corresponding with the
build up of the tension. So in our group were going to
really emphasis on sound to create a suspenseful, scary
sound which will evoke emotion. Moreover the surveys
conveyed to us more idea of structuring our trailer teaser:
starting of with a slow speed in the beginning and then to
increase the speed of the teaser to a climax, which will
leave the consumer curious and thrilled by the trailer
teaser at the end. Which is why sound is crucial in
making the trailer teaser flow with the context to create a
climax of anxiety.
We’re using both diegetic (only when the victim is
screaming) and mostly non-diegetic sound through out
the teaser trailer. Going to use fast pace sounds to
intensify moments for tense scenes and time to reflect
victims heart.
12. TASK 14
RESPONSIBILITY
As a group everyone : Hevin, Azhar,
Imaran and me Rahwa. We did everything
from filming, making poster, taking
pictures, making the magazine, editing,
camera and sound. We never planned to
divide the roles, but because we all had
something to offer we all ended up
contributing in the different tasks,
forwarding ideas. However Imran, Azhar
and Grace were casted in the film. Imran
was the villain, Grace was the victim and
Azhar was replacing Imran as the masked
guy, because only he could wear the red
contact lenses.
