ATTENZIONE
Le onde S necessitano di un
materiale acusticamente solido
per propagarsi efficacemente,
quindi non attraversano i liquidi
o le roccie fuse
NOTICE
S waves require an
acoustically solid material
for effective propagation, so
they cannot pass through the
liquids or the melted rocks

A powerful tool used by the Geophysicists
is the Seismic. Natural seismic waves
are generated by the earthquakes. Their
study is very useful to understand the
interior of the Earth.
L’Ipocentro è dove le fratture
delle rocce dentro la Terra
rilasciano l'energia. Due tipi
principali di onde si formano:
The compressive ‘P’ waves are
faster and generally less
destructive than the ‘S’ shear
waves which arrive later.
The Focus is the place inside
the Earth where rock fractures
release energy. Two main
types of waves are generated:
Uno strumento potente usato dai

naturali sono generate dai terremoti ed il
loro studio è molto utile per capire
l’interno della Terra.
Le onde compressive ‘P’ sono
più veloci e in genere meno
distruttive delle trasversali onde
‘S’ che arrivano più lentamente.

The seismic waves leave the Focus in all
directions at a velocity dependant upon the
properties of the material.
The seismic wave paths are
not strait because generally
the rocks inside the Earth are
not homogeneous.
The ray-path is subject to
reflection and to refraction
effects.
Some secondary waves run
on the surface of the Earth
along the interface between
ground and air, where
there is an abrupt velocity
decrease. The buildings
are often shaken down
by these waves
Le onde sismiche lasciano l’ipocentro in
tutte le direzioni ad una velocità dipendente
dalle caratteristiche del materiale.
I percorsi delle onde
sismiche non sono
rettilinei perché in genere
le rocce dentro la Terra
non sono omogenee. Essi
sono soggetti alle
riflessioni e alle rifrazioni.
Certe onde secondarie
viaggiano sulla superficie
della Terra lungo
l’interfaccia fra il suolo e
l’aria, dove c’è una
diminuzione brusca di
velocità. Gli edifici sono
spesso fatti crollare
da queste onde. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If a single earthquake
shakes the rocks, they will
end up swinging after
some time. So the sudden
ground movement does
not end shortly after, as
one can see in the figure.
Actually the ground
movements are the
combination of the
sets of oscillations
related to the
various types of
waves reaching the
recording station.
Se una singola scossa
sismica squote le rocce,
queste smetteranno di
oscillare dopo qualche
tempo. Quindi l’improvviso
moto del suolo non termina
subito, come si può
osservare nella figura.
In realtà i moti del
terreno sono la
combinazione di un
insieme di
oscillazioni dovute
ai vari tipi di onde
che raggiungono la
stazione di
registrazione.

The Seismic Stations are equipped with
seismographs that record the acceleration
of the ground motion along the three main
components. This helps in computing the
characteristics of the Earthquakes like the
location of the Focus.
The data from many
Stations are integrated to
get reliable and accurate
results.
Le Stazioni Sismiche sono attrezzate con
sismografi che registrano l’accelerazione
dei movimenti del suolo lungo le tre
componenti principali. Questo aiuta nel
calcolo delle caratteristiche dei Terremoti,
come l’ubicazione dell’Ipocentro.
Per ottenere dei risultati affidabili
ed accurati si integrano i dati di
molte Stazioni.

The number of seismic
waves that reach the
stations from a single
Earthquake could be
large. In fact there are
many paths that the
waves follow from the
Focus to the recording
station so the ground
could vibrate many hours.
Actually there are waves that are reflected
or are refracted inside the Earth in addition
to the waves mentioned before. Sometimes
it happens that P waves are converted to S
waves and vice versa.
The detailed studies have highlighted the
presence of a sort of concentric layering
inside the Earth related to changes of
acoustic impedance. The three main layers
are: the Crust, the Mantle and the Core.
The S waves are not able to cross the Core
which therefore is believed to be melted.
Il numero di onde
sismiche che raggiungono
le stazioni da un singolo
terremoto potrebbe
essere grande. Infatti ci
sono molti percorsi
dall’ipocentro alla
stazione di registrazione
e quindi il terreno può
vibrare per ore.
In effetti, oltre alle onde menzionate
prima, ci sono onde che si riflettono o
rifrangono all'interno della Terra. A volte
accade che onde P vengano convertite in
onde S e viceversa.
Studi approfonditi hanno evidenziato la
presenza di una sorta di stratificazione
concentrica dentro la Terra dovuta a cambi di
impedenza acustica. I tre strati principali
sono: Crosta, Mantello e Nucleo. Le onde S
non sono in grado di attraversare il Nucleo
che, pertanto, si presume essere fuso.

Comment:
The velocity of the P and S waves increase with
the distance. This happens because when the
distance is higher the rays travel deeper, where
actually higher velocity has been detected.
Commento:
La velocità delle onde P e S aumenta con la
distanza. Infatti quando la distanza è maggiore
i raggi viaggiano più in profondità, dove
effettivamente si sono rilevate velocità più alte.

There is a ring shaped
area on the Earth
surface where the P
waves generated by
the Earthquakes
cannot be detected.
The area is located
approximately at the
opposite side of each
Focus and it is caused
by the refraction of the
rays when they start to
get into the Core.
-There is also a round
area, at the opposite
side of each Focus,
where the S waves are
absent because they
cannot cross the Core.
- C'è anche un’area
circolare, sul lato
opposto agli ipocentri,
dove le onde S sono
assenti perché non
possono attraversare
il Nucleo.
- C'è una zona anulare
sulla superficie
terrestre dove le onde
P generate dai
terremoti non si
possono rilevare.
L'area è situata
approssimativamente
sul lato opposto di ogni
ipocentro ed è dovuta
alla rifrazione dei raggi
quando iniziano ad
entrare nel Nucleo.
- The computations have shown that no
Earthquake originate deeper than 700 km, so
the rocks are not rigid starting from that depth.
- I calcoli hanno mostrato che non ci sono
terremoti più profondi di 700 km, quindi le
rocce non sono rigide sotto quella profondità.

The real number of the
raypaths crossing the
Earth is high because
there is an additional
boundary at the base
of the Crust and
apparently the inner
part of the Core is
solid. The reflections
and the changes of P
waves into S and
viceversa makes the
number even larger.
The scientists have
created a ray
nomenclature to take
into account all the
possible set of waves.

Il numero reale di
percorsi sismici che
attraversano la Terra è
alto perché c'è un altro
limite alla base della
Crosta e forse la parte
interna del Nucleo è
solida. Le riflessioni e
le conversioni delle
onde P in S e
viceversa aumentano
ancora il numero.
Gli scienziati hanno
creato una sorta di
nomenclatura dei raggi
per poter considerare
tutti i possibili gruppi di
onde.
