9-Il campo magnetico terrestre 9-The Earth’s magnetic field
A magnetic Field has a pair of Poles
Natural magnetic Fields:
- Permanent magnetism in iron
related minerals (mainly magnetite
and ilmenite).
- Magnetism Induced in a material by
a magnetic field (Also electric
currents induce magnetic fields).
Magnetic Susceptibility: degree of
magnetization of a material in
response to a Magnetic Field
2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
Above the Curie Temperature (on average
about 700 oC) the minerals cease to be
magnetic. Since this temperature is already
reached in the Lithosphere, the Earth
magnetism should be generated by electric
currents. Most component of the Earth, like
the rocks, has low conductivity, while the
currents can circulate easily in metals.
Therefore a metallic nucleus is expected
inside the Earth.
Un Campo Magnetico ha due Poli
Campi magnetici naturali:
- Magnetismo Permanente in minerali
ferrosi (principalmente magnetite e
ilmenite).
- Magnetismo Indotto in un materiale
da un campo magnetico (Anche le
correnti elettriche inducono campi
magnetici). Suscettività magnetica:
grado di magnetizzazione di una
sostanza posta in un campo Magnetico
Sopra la Temperatura di Curie (mediamente
circa 700 oC) i minerali cessano di essere
magnetici, e poichè questa temperatura si
raggiunge già nella Litosfera, il magnetismo
terrestre deve essere generato da correnti
elettriche. La maggioranza dei componenti la
terra, come le rocce, ha bassa conducibilità,
mentre le correnti circolano agevolmente nei
metalli. Pertanto un nucleo metallico è previsto
all’interno della Terra.

The Earth's magnetic
field has the same form
as that of a bar magnet:
a dipole field, aligned
approximately with the
Earth's spin axis.
The Earth's magnetic
field extends into the
space. That part of the
Field is called
Magnetosphere. The
Solar wind, a fully
ionized hydrogen/helium
plasma that streams
continuously outward
from the Sun distorts the
shape of the
magnetosphere by
compressing it at the
front and causing a long
tail on the side away
from the Sun.

Campo magnetico
terrestre ha la stessa
forma di quello di una
barra magnetica: un
campo di dipolo
approssimativamente
allineato con asse di
rotazione della Terra.
Il campo terrestre si
estende nello spazio e
questa parte del campo
si chiama Magnetosfera.
Il vento solare, plasma di
idrogeno/elio ionizzato
che fluisce dal Sole,
distorce la forma della
Magnetosfera
comprimendola nella
parte anteriore e
provocando una lunga
coda sul lato lontano dal
Sole.

Measures of the magnetic Field are
carried out on and above (airborne) the
Earth surface with the magnetometers.
The magnetic Field is not homogeneous
or constant. In fact it shows variations in
Intensity, Inclination and Direction.

Le misurazioni del Campo magnetico
sono condotte sulla superficie terrestre o
sopra di essa (aeree) con i magnetometri.
Il campo magnetico non è omogeneo o
costante, infatti presenta variazioni in
Intensità, Inclinazione e Direzione.

The orientation of the Earth's
Magnetic field has frequently
alternated over geologic time
(Paleomagnetism). This
information has been used to
understand some Crustal
movements.
Example:
Alternation of the orientation in
the last 5 Million Years
2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
Variations occur also in Time.
Example:
Secular changes
in Great Britain
Ci sono anche Variazioni nel Tempo.
Esempio:
Cambiamenti
Secolari in
Gran Bretagna
L’ orientazione del Campo
Magnetico terrestre si è
spesso invertita lungo i tempi
geologici (Paleomagnetism).
Questa informazione è stata
usata per capire certi
movimenti crostali.
Esempio:
Alternanze dell’orientazione
negli ultimi 5 Milioni d’anni
