In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
Creating my magazine Front cover, contents page and double page spread, I used forms and conventions from
three main magazines in particular, I used NME (New Musical Express), Hammer Metal And Kerrang!
From each magazine I picked out obviously the front cover and contents pages, but also I chose a double page
spread from each magazine so I had different structures of which I could get ideas from and then develop them on
some what better, this is my front cover of which forms and conventions I have included into my final media
product of the basic design stages.

As you can see from both of these front

This is the final design of my front cover and these are the forms and conventions of which I have used and
developed into my own way which I believe works as I’m using professional ideas as inspiration and then
including my own ideas on top.

These four sections of text here of which

magazine which I have found, I have used this

or down to right/left as this is where the ideas are there I have developed them into
towards the buyer which is representing the
buyer looks, straight at the main photo my own as I have a different layout which
story line of which all front covers have and
which also represents the genre. suits the space better.
These are more of the conventions which I felt challenged me most and I developed more towards my
final production of the front cover.

These are nine front covers from all three magazines which I have used to help me create my front
cover and the main convention which challenged me most was the main photo, the main photo
represents the whole magazine which then represents the genre and to be able to get this to fit
together challenges my ideas and conventions of which I developed to put together my photo’s.
All three magazines of which I bought I believe was connected to my final genre of my magazine
production, I didn’t want to buy girly magazines as this wasn’t connected to my ideas I had from the
beginning but then neither on the other hand did I want to go buy men's magazines about cars as
this isn't at all my magazine genre, the three magazines which I bought were genre’s of rock/heavy
metal/indie/pop and they are all related to my genre in the music business.
Also where on all these magazines they have placed there main photo is very central, as this is where the main eye looks when browsing a shelf
full of magazines, if the front cover has a band photo placed onto there layout this then covers the page from left to right, which I have achieved.
Some of the the front covers have more than just one photo which then continues onto a different story but the photos are not genially in the
main eye they are towards the bottom of the page either left or right which I have also achieved.
Some of which there magazines do/don’t have on there layouts are the plus! Section at the bottom but I felt that looking at these magazines the
plus! Section gave me inspiration and room for development in my production, I looked over my research and studied that in the plus! Section
this is extra information can be on anything it can be freebies, to reviews, to gigs anything that is interesting and will grab the buyers eye which is
also challenged me to make this section try to stand out more than I originally realised from the beginning.
This is my final construction of my contents page production, these are the forms and conventions
which challenged me and which I also developed onto my own ideas.

Looking at these two contents pages of which I’m As you can see from both contents page they both have
using as examples, on the left the contents page is different conventions and are structured differently but
from Kerrang! And on the right NME contents page, I in some of the sections they are similar but they are the
didn’t take any ideas from my Hammer metal so that’s
conventions of which I challenged and developed…
why I’ve only imported these two contents pages.
I have broken the conventions and forms into sections of which I used and developed together to create my final
                                       production of my contents page.

These two structures of which are from NME
magazine are placed at the top of the page it
says ‘this week’ in a large, black, bold font, this
addresses the audience that this is a weekly
As I have combined ideas from NME and magazine. It is also a more informative
Kerrang! For the top section of “this approach to the title rather than just saying
Month” I also used both conventions for ‘contents page’, this is a good convention
the editors section at the top of my there for I developed my idea onwards and as
contents page as I had already decided to my magazine was monthly I decided to use
use my name of the magazine in that part “This Month” instead.
I didn’t have room to place my magazine
The NME logo is kept in the top left hand
front cover so I just decided to use the

From this convention I then realised that there
This particular section is from the Kerrang! needs to be a immediate link between the two

in different boxes separating each individual story/ as the logo/name and there for the link
news/gossip section which I felt worked really well, between the two pages will immediately be
this then challenged me to try and add this to my seen by the reader.

This would then leave me enough room to add the apply my name of the magazine in the corner
text sections of contents to the right of the page, I but this challenged me as I needed the “this

didn’t want gaps between boxes so I boxed mine off,
for the name of the magazine in the corner

These are my contents page conventions of which I have challenged and guided me through.

These are the Conventions of which have challenged me throughout creating my double page spread production.

This logo/title of the Kerrang! Magazine inspired me in a completely different way than I
could have imagined, analysing this logo/title I really found that the lines coming out of the
text onto the black background looked very effected they reminded me of a laser beam, I
then kept this thought in mind and developed this onwards…
I new I couldn’t of used the whole idea from Kerrang! And I found it challenging having to
find different ways of which I could use the laser beams on my double page, but then I
developed my ideas on and on and realised that as these lines go well with a black
background I would use the black as my main background on the double page spread as
this would cover it all and along with covering the page will be beams of different colours
mainly bright colours to draw attention but I wouldn’t have these beams shooting out of
text, I would have them shooting out of a picture but I didn’t want them to be shooting out
of the main picture which would be the biggest as the size of that picture would already
draw enough attention to it, so the smaller photo I felt would be much more appropriate.
This photo effect I found in
the double page spread I had planned to have the text at the top of my page, but as the black was being used for
from Hammer metal, there the background and the colours for the beams I was unsure which colour would be best
were two photo’s like this suited with this page, so i printed off the font in several different colours, one of which
on the right, but they had being white and I felt that the white was best suited, black and white go together and the
the effect of the tilt and the colours are still in the attention and wont be distorted in anyway over the white text.
photographic old effect with
Also from the Kerrang! Logo I liked the effect the font gave, it seemed slightly distorted but
the white edging and for me
still big and bold, although for my own work I used Chiller as the font I felt that this was
I thought this was different
very similar to the idea of Kerrang! So there for I feel I have achieved that effect as shown
and out of the ordinary
                                               on my own work.
which I really liked, also the
two photo’s were placed
towards the bottom of the
right side of the double
page which I liked also but I From this photo which was also used on the double page spread from Hammer metal, there are
then developed this and put two main conventions of which I liked, this photo has different levels and this I thought gave the
them the opposite side also photo a different look, usually you see bands all lined up posing but some here are sitting and
using my own ideas instead like my main photo for my double page I also had all my band members sitting down on some
of having two photo’s I steps looking relaxed.
thought three would work
Also as this photo has the same effect from the other one they both have the white edging which
as two can be tilted and
reminds the reader of when photographs started so I decided to use this on all my photos as I felt
one in the middle can be
this was a good effect its some what unusual and that is what I liked.
straight and I felt this gave
the photos depth.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The magazines of which I had bought previously to help guide me and give me inspiration were mainly representing a typical older teen as when you grow up
you tend to get your own style, your own genre of music and you become you! I deliberately bought them type of magazines as the older teen is genially aged
between 16-20 but also 14 year olds and up could then start to get into reading music so I’ve aged my magazine at 14-18. Once you get the genre of music of
which your most into, your style tends to change as you look up to the bands/singers/ as idols and try to look/dress/be like them and there for you create your
own style.

Firstly the genre which I have chosen is indie/pop as I felt these are the most popular genres in the music industry and creates the most income, most teens
listen to pop music as pop music is all around us but I believe adding in indie genre gives it that little something different as indie can be portrayed in many
ways, it can be a style of clothing or music or the way someone looks can be stereo typed into categories.

Secondly, Most teens of these ages grow up with celebrities everywhere in the media industry and as teens are growing up they tend to find a attraction to the
opposite sex, I intended to make my my media magazine for both sex’s, I felt by putting on a picture of a boy band would attract teenage girls to buying the
magazine but then also I included a girl band but I feel I didn’t achieve the appeal from my magazine to the both sex’s as I should made a bigger appearance of
the girl band I included.

Thirdly in my magazine there are sections and signs of using slag in my texts sections which could be said that’s a bad thing but I personally don’t I believe this
will capture the younger target audience as this is there everyday life, teenagers today don’t talk properly anymore, they abbreviate words and with the
technology of mobile phones teen ages seem to text things like “r u k?” as in “are you ok?” Also using the word “lol” meaning “laugh out loud”, so I feel adding
slang is the ideology of a typical teenager now.
Fourthly, going back to age’s and how different genre’s relate to different ages, indie/pop takes over the charts as teenagers like this genre but I believe that the
ideology for older generations of this world today prefer there own style of what they were brought up with and that is genres that cover classical/old folk/soul
and I believe that aiming a indie/pop magazine at 55+ age rang wouldn’t work and the buyers wouldn’t be there but aiming at the teens works they are the
ones that listen to this style the most and want to keep up to date with the latest music charts.

Also I believe that the type of colours which I have used as house colours also effect the type of buyer, from my first two questionnaires which I had created I
found the colours which my target audience would prefer there for I was able to include those colours into my final production, I felt that using purple, blue,
black and white fitted into the indie genre but only just fitted into the pop genre but I felt the look of the bands made for up for this as there just normal looking
people, they don’t have face piercing’s or anything like that as that would a completely different genre, but if I was using reds, greys and black this wouldn't
have fitted the indie genre completely as people felt this best suited rock/heavy metal genres.

Picking up again the photos and what the bands look like, I feel this is a very important aspect to any genre of music magazines, as mine was indie/pop I felt
that putting on a band dressed in black, tattoo's, facial piercing’s, blacked out eyes wouldn’t of suited this type of genre, as this would be best fitted into rock/
heavy metal, but then neither did I put on an older man holding a guitar advertising country western because teens are not into that style of genre.

Lastly I also believe that the stories of which I put with the photos are very important, as a teen you can loose interest with a boring story of how a band for
example went to there Nan's for tea, I felt that using the right stories attracts buyers they need to be funny/interesting/gossip potential and I felt I achieve this
as my double page spread for example has the question section and there are some questions of which I felt have funny answers, but I also feel that the
general layout of pages need to be clear and interesting as teens don’t want a whole page of text blabbing on and on they like pictures and I felt I have
achieved this also as I have plenty of pictures on all of my pages of which I’ve created for my final production and there for I believe my magazine represents
this type of social groups very well.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I believe that a kind of media institution that could potentially distribute my media product firstly could be obviously a music magazine publishers, there could be
opportunities for them to publish it as that’s what they do and I believe my product would attract buyers as there's sections for gossip which teens like to keep
up to date on, there's plenty of pictures that would appeal to the eye on the bands, its a different magazine as its not directly specific as it’s a mix of both pop/
indie genres which could go either way, it could be good that’s there a mix as its variety for the reader but then if its not as specific as some this could be a let
down and not attract all buyers.
Also one main thing that could be a problem is the fact it’s a music publishing distributor there for in there eyes there could not be a space in the market for this
kind of magazine as they would have a lot of music magazines they publish covering all genres and ages. I then took this Idea and had a look on the internet at
I found this music publisher…
                                                                                                                                http://www.musicmags.net/
                                                                                                                             The Music Magazine Publishers
                                                                                                                                    Association (MMPA)
…I print screened the page and as
you can see these are just some of
                                                                                                                             magazines they publish and the
variety is massive and there I feel that
                                                                                                                             this disrupter maybe wouldn’t think
                                                                                                                             that my magazine is appealing
enough, but this could still be a option.

If I was able to capture a difference in
this music publishers I believe this
could work, I maybe re-do my
                                                                                                                             magazine making it more professional
and appeal more to the eye of the
reader but then that would be missing
the point, they need to like my
magazine because they think it fits into
                                                                                                                             the market and is unique.

I feel it would be better if I could find
another publisher that has a wider
variety and not just publishers in
music, I feel a more open mined
                                                                                                                             approach is needed…
…New idea..
I new about ICP from being a media student and I know they are a publishing company which deals with every kind of genre of everything from fishing to hair
magazines they publish nearly anything you could think of, I went on there website and this is what they have said on there home page…
“IPC Media is a leading UK consumer magazine publisher. Almost two in every three UK women and over 45% of UK men read an IPC magazine. That's almost
27 million UK adults”
so from this I feel this could be a big opportunity for my magazine as they seem to be very popular with the buyers and there income must be massive and I
believe as they are every well known they wouldn’t mess you about and I feel they could be trusted, also on there home page they have stated..
“IPC's diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone. Our 80 magazines include What's on TV, Pick Me Up, Woman, Now, Marie Claire, In
Style, Woman & Home, Ideal Home, Nuts, Wallpaper*, Country Life, The Field, Rugby World, Practical Boat Owner and Look, our latest high street fashion and
celebrity weekly. Our digital properties include NME.com, the third largest commercial music website in the UK and housetohome.co.uk, the UK's first homes
portal. IPC’s brands are very simply at the heart of the UK's cultural life.”
So they seem very successful which is what I would need if I was going to publish my magazine, also I new they have the big music magazine NME but that’s
not exactly the genre I have for my product so I feel that for ICP there is a gap in the market for my magazine, my magazine captures a different audience and I
think that would be good for ICP, I believe I have gossip sections which can attract my target audience, I have photo’s which attract the buyers e.g. younger
girls, I feel that indie/pop as I said before isn't necessarily specific as its two genres but they are very close to each other, but that’s why my magazine is
different, also as ICP are every successful I believe together we could edit some parts of my magazine and improve it but as you can see below ICP are very
successful covering lots of different aspects of magazine’s. http://www.ipcmedia.com/
Who would be the audience for your media product?
From my research of which I bought three magazines NME, Hammer Metal and Kerrang! I was able to identify the genres and target
audience of these magazines and I felt that they were closely related to my own magazine. You can tell which magazines are what
genres and there target audience by there content in there magazines, for example the colours they use, the pictures they use, the
articles they have etc like Hammer metal, this magazines is very heavy metal/rock genre and they use red, white, black and grey and
the red could be portrayed as blood/anger which sets the scene for this typical genre. Different genre’s use different material to
attract there target audience.

My research gave me ideas of the genre I wanted to portray as pop/indie on all three pages of my work, for example I used NME
the most to inspire me through out the production as this magazine is the closet to indie/pop, I took some ideas from there pages,
photo’s, structural sections, layouts etc as this would help get my target audience so my magazine would appeal to them.

By using indie/pop material for example the name of my band [ ACID 4 ] I believe this portrays the indie side as it’s a weird name and
indie is weird as it’s a completely new style/genre but I felt by using this name made it more realistic and will attract more of the indie
side of music.
By using the colours blue, purple, black and white I believe this creates the indie look, because indie is darker colours but not dark
ones as in greys or dull colours the buyer can immediately see its pop/indie and also I believe the black background also helps
determine this as the blue and purple colours complement each other.
There for I believe I attract a niche audience, and by using the colours, pictures, articles I feel I’ve achieved aiming my magazine at
the older teen who is into indie/pop, but also I believe I could perhaps appeal to the slight percentage of rock but I think only by the
colours as they are dark colours but this would be a very slight chance of this happening.
How did you attract/address your audience?
By looking through my research I was able to identify ways of which they attract and address the audience and incorporate this with my own production for
example from the Kerrang! Magazine I was to use the idea of having the title/logo of the magazine over a strip of colour to attract attention to the buyer also by
highlighting the title this way the reader can then determine the genre of the magazine.

Placing the main attraction photo/story in the middle of the front cover also attracts attention to its self, its big bold and clear to see fro the reader and this will
then appeal to the buyer, also adding in a slogan, cheesy line helps develop on the photo by giving some information that is intriguing to the buyer so they
would buy and the magazine and read on.

Having a section where they advertise subscribing to the magazine so it can be home delivered I believe is a good way of addressing the audience of whom is
reading the magazine as this then gives the magazine publishers chance to interact with the audience but then the reader to be included as this section is
aimed jus for them.

Addressing the reader I believe I have achieved as the question section on my double page spread is there for there benefit as its gossip for them, its funny and
they are also getting to know about the band which is why they are reading on.

I feel that all the articles I have used and the photo’s I have used are in some what way addressing the audience, the articles are there for them to read but then
the publisher of the magazine are the ones who decide what goes into the columns as they know that the reader is highly interested in all the latest gossip,
news, headlines, reviews, gigs etc and the titles on the contents page of which I have chosen are there to attract the audience as the audience can go straight
to there section they want to read, I feel also adding in the plus! Section on both font cover and contents page this also attracts the readers eye as although the
sections are not big and bold they have a border on the front page around them to highlight the particular section which I believe works really well as it draws
attention to its self and catches the readers eye by having that border and arrow but every bit of research I had made has aided me throughout the process.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this
                                  product?
I feel that I have learnt varies technologies from this process….

Firstly, my ability to use adobe Photoshop has completely improved, I’m able to locate and identify how to use tools now for example, in my own media work I
have used the blending tool frequently, at first I didn’t really no the out come of all the tools and what effect I would get but once I had used them. had a look
and took time to see I was then able to think of what effect I wanted to achieve and by going to the blending tool I was able to straight away pick which effect I
wanted and I new the out come.

Secondly for my album cover which I was using on my contents page, I wanted to create a new different, distorted kind of look, by this time I had worked a lot
with Photoshop as I had achieved my production of the front cover so I roughly new where about I could go to change the effects of my photo and from this
point onwards once I had gone to “liquefy” I then found a whole new range which I didn’t know was there so I just exploring the content on Photoshop I felt
guided me through just by browsing, also by doing this I was able to find more tools which helped me throughout my production for example I found the
brightness and contrast tool, the hue and saturation, colour balancing etc.
More of which I have learnt…
Thirdly, from the big tool box on the left side of photo shop I was able to change/edit a number of different things, there is a paint bucket tool of which I
could use to change the colouring of a large area, the smudge tool which guided me to editing my girl band photo, eye dropper tool which I could place
of a certain colour in my photo and this tool would pick that colour up and I could then colouring which I found use full for editing someone's face if they
had to many spot this was helping matching the correct colour so the reader wouldn’t notice, I also find just like before exploring this tools and trying
them out helped me, for example I clicked on the triangular marquee tool and I saw that this section said feather so I then experimented with effects
and options, but also the red eye tool in Photoshop is very well hidden as you have to click on a box and hold it down for the drop down box to appear
so I also think patience helped me when I couldn’t find what I was looking for.

Fourthly, I also found that if I needed to cut out parts of my photo the magnetic lasso tool was very use and helped me, with this tool you could go round
the edge of the photo and it would cut it for you but I also found this tool could be a problem, there were two main aspects which I found to be a hassle,
firstly if you happened to accidentally double click while dragging the mouse over the cutting parts the tool would then automatically join to where you
started cutting and there for would cut the photo up and the result of this would be having to start again, secondly although in the name in it states
being magnetic this was the draw back as it would get close to the edge of the cutting parts but not exact and as this would be a professional magazine
this needed to be exact, so I found this more time consuming as I either had bits of the edging missing or too much which there fore distorted the photo
and didn’t give it the professional look I aimed for.

Also one thing I found really interesting and which I felt guided me through was gathering professional photos of which I could develop my own ideas
on top, the photos which I had gathered inspired me and I think if I hadn't of found them I’m not to sure how could my photo’s would have been and if
the angles I had captured would be the same.
Lastly, something which may seem small but by knowing how to change the paint brush tool size is very useful when editing someone's skin, if they
have spots that need to hidden and the paint brush size is to big then this would be clear to the reader that I have attempted to try and cover up
certain sections but then on the other hand if the paint brush size is to small then is more time consuming as if I had a bigger section of colour to fill
in this would waste time and I felt that by being able to vary the size of the paint brush was very helpful.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
Firstly, the main thing which I found I didn’t use properly was the research part and planning, I feel from my preliminary I have gathered much more research
into similar products (music magazine genres) and I have used much more ideas of there styles/layouts/ideas as shown on my work also I believe my planning
and drafts from my preliminary have very much improved, for my preliminary I drafted out one contents and one front cover straight out and I didn’t use different
ideas and then pick out my final one like I did for this production, also I have planned much better for this production and researched into different text styles
that fit the different genres, I have researched and gathered ideas for my own photos which I have taken, the photos which I gathered were professional quality
and I felt that then inspired me and I developed my own with the ideas and for my preliminary I never done this I just took my own photos.

Secondly, as I feel I’m not one of the best to write up my own work as I find it difficult saying what I did and how, but I believe that I have improved from my
preliminary, I think now the media studies course has continued I have begun to get a better understanding of my own work, I feel the quality of how I write my
media work up has improved also as I have begun to also understand meanings of words used in media and how to put them into context, Also I feel I have
some what created my own way of writing up my media work from my preliminary, as for me seeing a page of text bores me and I think I’ve tried to avoid that in
my media work now by using more colours and using photo’s/print screens and I believe this then helps me to describe how I done things but I prefer seeing
that than a page of black and white text.

Thirdly, being organised and keeping up to date has helped me, for my preliminary I believe I could of done better, my time management wasn’t the best and I
remember rushing sections which I should of taken time on. One major time consuming part I remember messing up was I spent far to much time on my front
cover and then didn’t spend as much time as I should of on my contents page which then got rushed and I believe if I had planned this out better this wouldn’t
have happened. Also for my written work it wasn’t very good, I had left it all to the last minute and then when trying to write my lessons up I found really difficult
as I couldn’t remember a thing, so from this I have kept up to date with my media journal as its better so I can explain things as they are fresh in my head that
day.

Fourthly, the whole use of Photoshop I have completely improved in, using this software from my preliminary was very basic I dint explore Photoshop there for
the potential to create different effects wasn’t very high and not knowing where tools were was very time consuming which I would then get impatient with
because I would want to get a certain aspect done, so I felt from my preliminary my Photoshop skills have definitely improved and one in particular I feel has
improved is my ability to cut out images as time goes on I got more and more confident about cutting images out although I still don’t think they have that
professional touch on them but I believe they have improved.

I think my general ability has just improved from preliminary task and I’m very glad that we had the task from start as I can see now looking back the reason
why we had it, if we had just been given this production I don’t think mine would have been as successful as it has turned out now I would of done so many
things and I’m pleased with m final production and how it has worked out. 

Danielle Rippengill

  • 1. Danielle Rippengill INDIEGO evaluation
  • 2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Creating my magazine Front cover, contents page and double page spread, I used forms and conventions from three main magazines in particular, I used NME (New Musical Express), Hammer Metal And Kerrang! From each magazine I picked out obviously the front cover and contents pages, but also I chose a double page spread from each magazine so I had different structures of which I could get ideas from and then develop them on some what better, this is my front cover of which forms and conventions I have included into my final media product of the basic design stages. As you can see from both of these front cover names of the magazines they have the name and then a strip of colour behind it, This particular section comes from originally I was only going to use my name indiego the Kerrang! Magazine at the with a line underneath it but once I had placed it in bottom of the page to advertise I felt it didn’t look professional enough so I looked more of which is in the magazine back on my researched magazines and figured for the buyer to see, as I had this is option of which I then carried on to use. planned not to make this section Although the colours are very different I believe it fit across the page it didn’t look still has a very good effect because it will attract right just on half of the page so I the buyer/reader by pulling them in with a big bold decided to put two pictures there headline name. This name is them immediately instead which I believed worked recognised by the buyer as it is a form of a logo much better and this will offer the and represents the genre of magazine by the buyer more information. name and colours of which are used for the house colours of this particular magazine, Kerrang! Has chosen to make the statement title big a and bold which is the convention of which I have developed This little section at the bottom of this Kerrang! Front cover is very useful as the way they but on the other hand NME logo is small – have structured this is an advantage to the buyer as this allows them to see more subjects with in the magazine, and as the plus! Is in the arrow this also attracts attention They don’t think that the title is very important and this is why there logo isn't very big and can be as its big and bold to the buyer. But the structure is set out very well as it is in different hidden by photo’s and text very easily. sections so this is easier to read and understand towards the reader.
  • 3. This is the final design of my front cover and these are the forms and conventions of which I have used and developed into my own way which I believe works as I’m using professional ideas as inspiration and then including my own ideas on top. These four sections of text here of which are all examples from the Kerrang! And NME magazine which I have found, I have used this idea and as you can see constructed this section in the same way, also if you read these examples from the magazines they are all These two examples from the Kerrang! advertising bands and information so this is Magazine and the NME magazine gave a where my ideas came from but I just wanted a lot of inspiration to me as once I had placed dash between them so this is how I developed my photo on my front cover I looked back my own ideas from what I had seen from the on some research and noticed they either magazines of my research. use quotes from a band member, use a song title or use some cheesy related line that brings in buyers to the magazine’s. For example the Kerrang! Magazine uses a song title “anything can happen in the next half hour” this a very big song and Enter Shikari the band is well known from this These three bar codes are from all three song so once the reader acknowledges magazines of which I bought as research, this, this will then bring in the buyers. This NME, Kerrang! And Hammer Metal, I idea I then developed into my own as I had personal didn’t like the Metal Hammer one as named the band [ ACID 4 ] I then related this one is a vertical layout and I prefer the acid to science and acid is a corroding horizontal layout, also on the barcodes they chemical so this is where I created my Also I noticed that where they have give more information which includes the cheesy line “corroding there way to the top” placed this slogan is very important as price, a website, the date and the issue and I believe this achieves what I intended they don’t place it right in the middle of number and I also included these sections of because its just like a professional page but its either just under the middle information onto my barcode, although there magazine to attract attention with a slogan or down to right/left as this is where the ideas are there I have developed them into towards the buyer which is representing the buyer looks, straight at the main photo my own as I have a different layout which story line of which all front covers have and which also represents the genre. suits the space better.
  • 4. These are more of the conventions which I felt challenged me most and I developed more towards my final production of the front cover. These are nine front covers from all three magazines which I have used to help me create my front cover and the main convention which challenged me most was the main photo, the main photo represents the whole magazine which then represents the genre and to be able to get this to fit together challenges my ideas and conventions of which I developed to put together my photo’s. All three magazines of which I bought I believe was connected to my final genre of my magazine production, I didn’t want to buy girly magazines as this wasn’t connected to my ideas I had from the beginning but then neither on the other hand did I want to go buy men's magazines about cars as this isn't at all my magazine genre, the three magazines which I bought were genre’s of rock/heavy metal/indie/pop and they are all related to my genre in the music business. Also where on all these magazines they have placed there main photo is very central, as this is where the main eye looks when browsing a shelf full of magazines, if the front cover has a band photo placed onto there layout this then covers the page from left to right, which I have achieved. Some of the the front covers have more than just one photo which then continues onto a different story but the photos are not genially in the main eye they are towards the bottom of the page either left or right which I have also achieved. Some of which there magazines do/don’t have on there layouts are the plus! Section at the bottom but I felt that looking at these magazines the plus! Section gave me inspiration and room for development in my production, I looked over my research and studied that in the plus! Section this is extra information can be on anything it can be freebies, to reviews, to gigs anything that is interesting and will grab the buyers eye which is also challenged me to make this section try to stand out more than I originally realised from the beginning.
  • 5. This is my final construction of my contents page production, these are the forms and conventions which challenged me and which I also developed onto my own ideas. Looking at these two contents pages of which I’m As you can see from both contents page they both have using as examples, on the left the contents page is different conventions and are structured differently but from Kerrang! And on the right NME contents page, I in some of the sections they are similar but they are the didn’t take any ideas from my Hammer metal so that’s conventions of which I challenged and developed… why I’ve only imported these two contents pages.
  • 6. I have broken the conventions and forms into sections of which I used and developed together to create my final production of my contents page. These two structures of which are from NME magazine are placed at the top of the page it says ‘this week’ in a large, black, bold font, this addresses the audience that this is a weekly As I have combined ideas from NME and magazine. It is also a more informative Kerrang! For the top section of “this approach to the title rather than just saying Month” I also used both conventions for ‘contents page’, this is a good convention the editors section at the top of my there for I developed my idea onwards and as contents page as I had already decided to my magazine was monthly I decided to use use my name of the magazine in that part “This Month” instead. I didn’t have room to place my magazine The NME logo is kept in the top left hand front cover so I just decided to use the corner there for I could see the link between idea of the small text. both front cover and contents page which symbolises the magazine being as one with links which I felt works well as there isn't a contrast between these two pages which are the most important as the reader directly goes to the contents page but is drawn in by the front cover. From this convention I then realised that there This particular section is from the Kerrang! needs to be a immediate link between the two Magazine, there convention of this part is clear and pages so I added in the blue strip across the easy to see to the eye as you can see there set out top of the page as this will be well recognised in different boxes separating each individual story/ as the logo/name and there for the link news/gossip section which I felt worked really well, between the two pages will immediately be this then challenged me to try and add this to my seen by the reader. own production, I then figured if I cut out this Also from using the NME ideas I was able to section… This would then leave me enough room to add the apply my name of the magazine in the corner text sections of contents to the right of the page, I but this challenged me as I needed the “this Month” to be big and bold but also keep room didn’t want gaps between boxes so I boxed mine off, for the name of the magazine in the corner added in a background sticking to the house colours.
  • 7. These are my contents page conventions of which I have challenged and guided me through. The main story of the This contents page is the magazine needs to be one from NME as this advertised a lot and from this magazine genre is Kerrang! Contents page I felt closely related to mine this was very clear and good and the conventions I for achieving this, placing the have used ideas from, main photo of the band near clearly from this contents the central part of the page page you can see that I immediately grabs the readers have used the idea of eye so there for they will read having a box behind the on to the double page spread, text to highlight the also some text over the photo headers which will is good but the text needs to appeal to the reader as be worth while and I feel this is clear to see also putting “new band” will attract a audience as they are to make things more always interested in the newest bands and gossip on clear quick and easy the them also but putting the page number quite central to numbers of the page are the photo will immediately catch the readers eye and in different colours. Also I there for they will turn to the pages. liked the idea of having the first line next to the number of the page in bigger text than the line As you can see from my Contents page its under it as this will got a white back ground but if you look at the highlight what's on the two contents page examples there This section from Kerrang! page and advertise to backgrounds are plain as they need the Interacts with the reader and attract the attention of attention on the main issues and articles gets them involved with the the reader and the little used to appeal to the reader and if I was to magazine more, also this will writing just gives it that add a brightly colour background one this bring in a profit/income to the extra section of would take the eye off of the main articles publishers as they are getting information to draw in and two this wouldn’t fit in with my genre or the money, but the main thing the reader. The house colours as they are not bright colours. is that this is very realistic, convention of the arrows every magazine has these are very clear and make sections for subscription this appeal to the reader although I couldn’t fit a picture as this saves time and is of my magazine in I believe I very direct as it says “on have achieved the look of the front cover” in a bright subscription section. colour.
  • 8. These are the Conventions of which have challenged me throughout creating my double page spread production. This logo/title of the Kerrang! Magazine inspired me in a completely different way than I could have imagined, analysing this logo/title I really found that the lines coming out of the text onto the black background looked very effected they reminded me of a laser beam, I then kept this thought in mind and developed this onwards… I new I couldn’t of used the whole idea from Kerrang! And I found it challenging having to find different ways of which I could use the laser beams on my double page, but then I developed my ideas on and on and realised that as these lines go well with a black background I would use the black as my main background on the double page spread as this would cover it all and along with covering the page will be beams of different colours mainly bright colours to draw attention but I wouldn’t have these beams shooting out of text, I would have them shooting out of a picture but I didn’t want them to be shooting out of the main picture which would be the biggest as the size of that picture would already draw enough attention to it, so the smaller photo I felt would be much more appropriate. This photo effect I found in the double page spread I had planned to have the text at the top of my page, but as the black was being used for from Hammer metal, there the background and the colours for the beams I was unsure which colour would be best were two photo’s like this suited with this page, so i printed off the font in several different colours, one of which on the right, but they had being white and I felt that the white was best suited, black and white go together and the the effect of the tilt and the colours are still in the attention and wont be distorted in anyway over the white text. photographic old effect with Also from the Kerrang! Logo I liked the effect the font gave, it seemed slightly distorted but the white edging and for me still big and bold, although for my own work I used Chiller as the font I felt that this was I thought this was different very similar to the idea of Kerrang! So there for I feel I have achieved that effect as shown and out of the ordinary on my own work. which I really liked, also the two photo’s were placed towards the bottom of the right side of the double page which I liked also but I From this photo which was also used on the double page spread from Hammer metal, there are then developed this and put two main conventions of which I liked, this photo has different levels and this I thought gave the them the opposite side also photo a different look, usually you see bands all lined up posing but some here are sitting and using my own ideas instead like my main photo for my double page I also had all my band members sitting down on some of having two photo’s I steps looking relaxed. thought three would work Also as this photo has the same effect from the other one they both have the white edging which as two can be tilted and reminds the reader of when photographs started so I decided to use this on all my photos as I felt one in the middle can be this was a good effect its some what unusual and that is what I liked. straight and I felt this gave the photos depth.
  • 9. How does your media product represent particular social groups? The magazines of which I had bought previously to help guide me and give me inspiration were mainly representing a typical older teen as when you grow up you tend to get your own style, your own genre of music and you become you! I deliberately bought them type of magazines as the older teen is genially aged between 16-20 but also 14 year olds and up could then start to get into reading music so I’ve aged my magazine at 14-18. Once you get the genre of music of which your most into, your style tends to change as you look up to the bands/singers/ as idols and try to look/dress/be like them and there for you create your own style. Firstly the genre which I have chosen is indie/pop as I felt these are the most popular genres in the music industry and creates the most income, most teens listen to pop music as pop music is all around us but I believe adding in indie genre gives it that little something different as indie can be portrayed in many ways, it can be a style of clothing or music or the way someone looks can be stereo typed into categories. Secondly, Most teens of these ages grow up with celebrities everywhere in the media industry and as teens are growing up they tend to find a attraction to the opposite sex, I intended to make my my media magazine for both sex’s, I felt by putting on a picture of a boy band would attract teenage girls to buying the magazine but then also I included a girl band but I feel I didn’t achieve the appeal from my magazine to the both sex’s as I should made a bigger appearance of the girl band I included. Thirdly in my magazine there are sections and signs of using slag in my texts sections which could be said that’s a bad thing but I personally don’t I believe this will capture the younger target audience as this is there everyday life, teenagers today don’t talk properly anymore, they abbreviate words and with the technology of mobile phones teen ages seem to text things like “r u k?” as in “are you ok?” Also using the word “lol” meaning “laugh out loud”, so I feel adding slang is the ideology of a typical teenager now. Fourthly, going back to age’s and how different genre’s relate to different ages, indie/pop takes over the charts as teenagers like this genre but I believe that the ideology for older generations of this world today prefer there own style of what they were brought up with and that is genres that cover classical/old folk/soul and I believe that aiming a indie/pop magazine at 55+ age rang wouldn’t work and the buyers wouldn’t be there but aiming at the teens works they are the ones that listen to this style the most and want to keep up to date with the latest music charts. Also I believe that the type of colours which I have used as house colours also effect the type of buyer, from my first two questionnaires which I had created I found the colours which my target audience would prefer there for I was able to include those colours into my final production, I felt that using purple, blue, black and white fitted into the indie genre but only just fitted into the pop genre but I felt the look of the bands made for up for this as there just normal looking people, they don’t have face piercing’s or anything like that as that would a completely different genre, but if I was using reds, greys and black this wouldn't have fitted the indie genre completely as people felt this best suited rock/heavy metal genres. Picking up again the photos and what the bands look like, I feel this is a very important aspect to any genre of music magazines, as mine was indie/pop I felt that putting on a band dressed in black, tattoo's, facial piercing’s, blacked out eyes wouldn’t of suited this type of genre, as this would be best fitted into rock/ heavy metal, but then neither did I put on an older man holding a guitar advertising country western because teens are not into that style of genre. Lastly I also believe that the stories of which I put with the photos are very important, as a teen you can loose interest with a boring story of how a band for example went to there Nan's for tea, I felt that using the right stories attracts buyers they need to be funny/interesting/gossip potential and I felt I achieve this as my double page spread for example has the question section and there are some questions of which I felt have funny answers, but I also feel that the general layout of pages need to be clear and interesting as teens don’t want a whole page of text blabbing on and on they like pictures and I felt I have achieved this also as I have plenty of pictures on all of my pages of which I’ve created for my final production and there for I believe my magazine represents this type of social groups very well.
  • 10. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? I believe that a kind of media institution that could potentially distribute my media product firstly could be obviously a music magazine publishers, there could be opportunities for them to publish it as that’s what they do and I believe my product would attract buyers as there's sections for gossip which teens like to keep up to date on, there's plenty of pictures that would appeal to the eye on the bands, its a different magazine as its not directly specific as it’s a mix of both pop/ indie genres which could go either way, it could be good that’s there a mix as its variety for the reader but then if its not as specific as some this could be a let down and not attract all buyers. Also one main thing that could be a problem is the fact it’s a music publishing distributor there for in there eyes there could not be a space in the market for this kind of magazine as they would have a lot of music magazines they publish covering all genres and ages. I then took this Idea and had a look on the internet at I found this music publisher… http://www.musicmags.net/ The Music Magazine Publishers Association (MMPA) …I print screened the page and as you can see these are just some of magazines they publish and the variety is massive and there I feel that this disrupter maybe wouldn’t think that my magazine is appealing enough, but this could still be a option. If I was able to capture a difference in this music publishers I believe this could work, I maybe re-do my magazine making it more professional and appeal more to the eye of the reader but then that would be missing the point, they need to like my magazine because they think it fits into the market and is unique. I feel it would be better if I could find another publisher that has a wider variety and not just publishers in music, I feel a more open mined approach is needed…
  • 11. …New idea.. I new about ICP from being a media student and I know they are a publishing company which deals with every kind of genre of everything from fishing to hair magazines they publish nearly anything you could think of, I went on there website and this is what they have said on there home page… “IPC Media is a leading UK consumer magazine publisher. Almost two in every three UK women and over 45% of UK men read an IPC magazine. That's almost 27 million UK adults” so from this I feel this could be a big opportunity for my magazine as they seem to be very popular with the buyers and there income must be massive and I believe as they are every well known they wouldn’t mess you about and I feel they could be trusted, also on there home page they have stated.. “IPC's diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone. Our 80 magazines include What's on TV, Pick Me Up, Woman, Now, Marie Claire, In Style, Woman & Home, Ideal Home, Nuts, Wallpaper*, Country Life, The Field, Rugby World, Practical Boat Owner and Look, our latest high street fashion and celebrity weekly. Our digital properties include NME.com, the third largest commercial music website in the UK and housetohome.co.uk, the UK's first homes portal. IPC’s brands are very simply at the heart of the UK's cultural life.” So they seem very successful which is what I would need if I was going to publish my magazine, also I new they have the big music magazine NME but that’s not exactly the genre I have for my product so I feel that for ICP there is a gap in the market for my magazine, my magazine captures a different audience and I think that would be good for ICP, I believe I have gossip sections which can attract my target audience, I have photo’s which attract the buyers e.g. younger girls, I feel that indie/pop as I said before isn't necessarily specific as its two genres but they are very close to each other, but that’s why my magazine is different, also as ICP are every successful I believe together we could edit some parts of my magazine and improve it but as you can see below ICP are very successful covering lots of different aspects of magazine’s. http://www.ipcmedia.com/
  • 12. Who would be the audience for your media product? From my research of which I bought three magazines NME, Hammer Metal and Kerrang! I was able to identify the genres and target audience of these magazines and I felt that they were closely related to my own magazine. You can tell which magazines are what genres and there target audience by there content in there magazines, for example the colours they use, the pictures they use, the articles they have etc like Hammer metal, this magazines is very heavy metal/rock genre and they use red, white, black and grey and the red could be portrayed as blood/anger which sets the scene for this typical genre. Different genre’s use different material to attract there target audience. My research gave me ideas of the genre I wanted to portray as pop/indie on all three pages of my work, for example I used NME the most to inspire me through out the production as this magazine is the closet to indie/pop, I took some ideas from there pages, photo’s, structural sections, layouts etc as this would help get my target audience so my magazine would appeal to them. By using indie/pop material for example the name of my band [ ACID 4 ] I believe this portrays the indie side as it’s a weird name and indie is weird as it’s a completely new style/genre but I felt by using this name made it more realistic and will attract more of the indie side of music. By using the colours blue, purple, black and white I believe this creates the indie look, because indie is darker colours but not dark ones as in greys or dull colours the buyer can immediately see its pop/indie and also I believe the black background also helps determine this as the blue and purple colours complement each other. There for I believe I attract a niche audience, and by using the colours, pictures, articles I feel I’ve achieved aiming my magazine at the older teen who is into indie/pop, but also I believe I could perhaps appeal to the slight percentage of rock but I think only by the colours as they are dark colours but this would be a very slight chance of this happening.
  • 13. How did you attract/address your audience? By looking through my research I was able to identify ways of which they attract and address the audience and incorporate this with my own production for example from the Kerrang! Magazine I was to use the idea of having the title/logo of the magazine over a strip of colour to attract attention to the buyer also by highlighting the title this way the reader can then determine the genre of the magazine. Placing the main attraction photo/story in the middle of the front cover also attracts attention to its self, its big bold and clear to see fro the reader and this will then appeal to the buyer, also adding in a slogan, cheesy line helps develop on the photo by giving some information that is intriguing to the buyer so they would buy and the magazine and read on. Having a section where they advertise subscribing to the magazine so it can be home delivered I believe is a good way of addressing the audience of whom is reading the magazine as this then gives the magazine publishers chance to interact with the audience but then the reader to be included as this section is aimed jus for them. Addressing the reader I believe I have achieved as the question section on my double page spread is there for there benefit as its gossip for them, its funny and they are also getting to know about the band which is why they are reading on. I feel that all the articles I have used and the photo’s I have used are in some what way addressing the audience, the articles are there for them to read but then the publisher of the magazine are the ones who decide what goes into the columns as they know that the reader is highly interested in all the latest gossip, news, headlines, reviews, gigs etc and the titles on the contents page of which I have chosen are there to attract the audience as the audience can go straight to there section they want to read, I feel also adding in the plus! Section on both font cover and contents page this also attracts the readers eye as although the sections are not big and bold they have a border on the front page around them to highlight the particular section which I believe works really well as it draws attention to its self and catches the readers eye by having that border and arrow but every bit of research I had made has aided me throughout the process.
  • 14. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? I feel that I have learnt varies technologies from this process…. Firstly, my ability to use adobe Photoshop has completely improved, I’m able to locate and identify how to use tools now for example, in my own media work I have used the blending tool frequently, at first I didn’t really no the out come of all the tools and what effect I would get but once I had used them. had a look and took time to see I was then able to think of what effect I wanted to achieve and by going to the blending tool I was able to straight away pick which effect I wanted and I new the out come. Secondly for my album cover which I was using on my contents page, I wanted to create a new different, distorted kind of look, by this time I had worked a lot with Photoshop as I had achieved my production of the front cover so I roughly new where about I could go to change the effects of my photo and from this point onwards once I had gone to “liquefy” I then found a whole new range which I didn’t know was there so I just exploring the content on Photoshop I felt guided me through just by browsing, also by doing this I was able to find more tools which helped me throughout my production for example I found the brightness and contrast tool, the hue and saturation, colour balancing etc.
  • 15. More of which I have learnt… Thirdly, from the big tool box on the left side of photo shop I was able to change/edit a number of different things, there is a paint bucket tool of which I could use to change the colouring of a large area, the smudge tool which guided me to editing my girl band photo, eye dropper tool which I could place of a certain colour in my photo and this tool would pick that colour up and I could then colouring which I found use full for editing someone's face if they had to many spot this was helping matching the correct colour so the reader wouldn’t notice, I also find just like before exploring this tools and trying them out helped me, for example I clicked on the triangular marquee tool and I saw that this section said feather so I then experimented with effects and options, but also the red eye tool in Photoshop is very well hidden as you have to click on a box and hold it down for the drop down box to appear so I also think patience helped me when I couldn’t find what I was looking for. Fourthly, I also found that if I needed to cut out parts of my photo the magnetic lasso tool was very use and helped me, with this tool you could go round the edge of the photo and it would cut it for you but I also found this tool could be a problem, there were two main aspects which I found to be a hassle, firstly if you happened to accidentally double click while dragging the mouse over the cutting parts the tool would then automatically join to where you started cutting and there for would cut the photo up and the result of this would be having to start again, secondly although in the name in it states being magnetic this was the draw back as it would get close to the edge of the cutting parts but not exact and as this would be a professional magazine this needed to be exact, so I found this more time consuming as I either had bits of the edging missing or too much which there fore distorted the photo and didn’t give it the professional look I aimed for. Also one thing I found really interesting and which I felt guided me through was gathering professional photos of which I could develop my own ideas on top, the photos which I had gathered inspired me and I think if I hadn't of found them I’m not to sure how could my photo’s would have been and if the angles I had captured would be the same. Lastly, something which may seem small but by knowing how to change the paint brush tool size is very useful when editing someone's skin, if they have spots that need to hidden and the paint brush size is to big then this would be clear to the reader that I have attempted to try and cover up certain sections but then on the other hand if the paint brush size is to small then is more time consuming as if I had a bigger section of colour to fill in this would waste time and I felt that by being able to vary the size of the paint brush was very helpful.
  • 16. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Firstly, the main thing which I found I didn’t use properly was the research part and planning, I feel from my preliminary I have gathered much more research into similar products (music magazine genres) and I have used much more ideas of there styles/layouts/ideas as shown on my work also I believe my planning and drafts from my preliminary have very much improved, for my preliminary I drafted out one contents and one front cover straight out and I didn’t use different ideas and then pick out my final one like I did for this production, also I have planned much better for this production and researched into different text styles that fit the different genres, I have researched and gathered ideas for my own photos which I have taken, the photos which I gathered were professional quality and I felt that then inspired me and I developed my own with the ideas and for my preliminary I never done this I just took my own photos. Secondly, as I feel I’m not one of the best to write up my own work as I find it difficult saying what I did and how, but I believe that I have improved from my preliminary, I think now the media studies course has continued I have begun to get a better understanding of my own work, I feel the quality of how I write my media work up has improved also as I have begun to also understand meanings of words used in media and how to put them into context, Also I feel I have some what created my own way of writing up my media work from my preliminary, as for me seeing a page of text bores me and I think I’ve tried to avoid that in my media work now by using more colours and using photo’s/print screens and I believe this then helps me to describe how I done things but I prefer seeing that than a page of black and white text. Thirdly, being organised and keeping up to date has helped me, for my preliminary I believe I could of done better, my time management wasn’t the best and I remember rushing sections which I should of taken time on. One major time consuming part I remember messing up was I spent far to much time on my front cover and then didn’t spend as much time as I should of on my contents page which then got rushed and I believe if I had planned this out better this wouldn’t have happened. Also for my written work it wasn’t very good, I had left it all to the last minute and then when trying to write my lessons up I found really difficult as I couldn’t remember a thing, so from this I have kept up to date with my media journal as its better so I can explain things as they are fresh in my head that day. Fourthly, the whole use of Photoshop I have completely improved in, using this software from my preliminary was very basic I dint explore Photoshop there for the potential to create different effects wasn’t very high and not knowing where tools were was very time consuming which I would then get impatient with because I would want to get a certain aspect done, so I felt from my preliminary my Photoshop skills have definitely improved and one in particular I feel has improved is my ability to cut out images as time goes on I got more and more confident about cutting images out although I still don’t think they have that professional touch on them but I believe they have improved. I think my general ability has just improved from preliminary task and I’m very glad that we had the task from start as I can see now looking back the reason why we had it, if we had just been given this production I don’t think mine would have been as successful as it has turned out now I would of done so many things and I’m pleased with m final production and how it has worked out. 
