ECOWAS COMMISSION CALLS ON NIGER TO RESPECT CONSTITUTION AND
ECOWAS PROTOCOL ON DEMOCRACY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE
ECOWAS Commission appeals to Niger authorities to abide by their Constitution and
the ECOWAS Additional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, signed and
ratified by Niger, especially the aspect that forbids obtaining or maintaining power
through unconstitutional means.
Recalling the role played by Niger in the adoption, ratification and implementation of
the Additional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, ECOWAS wishes to
prevent the heightening of political tension in Niger and maintain the democratic
gains and the stability the country has enjoyed in the past years because of the
consensus that exists among the various political stakeholders.
This appeal follows the visit of a delegation sent by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua
in his capacity as ECOWAS Chairman, to his Niger counterpart, President Mamadou
Tandja, to deliver a message on the present political situation. The delegation was
led by former Nigerian Head of State, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar.
