       B. Motivation

Six students are asked to pick any numbers from one to six one at a time.
               Each number has corresponding words.
Student will act the chosen word then the rest of the class will guess the student’s action
               that ends in –ing.
Actions to be performed by the students:

                      1- planting
                      2- washing

                differences of gerund.

       C. Development of Lesson

               1. Elicitation

When a verb ends in -ing, it may be a gerund or a present participle. It is
important to understand that they are not the same.

                    What's the difference?

When we use a verb in -ing form more like a noun, it is usually a gerund:

                               Ex. Singing is fun.

When we use a verb in -ing form more like a verb or an adjective, it is usually a
                    present participle.

                               Ex. Anthony is singing.

                                 I have a boring teacher.

What are Gerunds? How do they function? Gerunds are verbal forms ending
in -ing that functions as a noun.

Like an ordinary single-word noun, a gerund may be used as a

            2. Presentation

Teacher presents a huge picture showing the hobbies or recreational activities
of each member of a family.

Observe the activities that each member is doing.
How do you call these activities? (hobbies/recreational activities)

(Teacher writes on the board the students’ answers for the given questions.)

             • What activity makes Mr. Cruz healthy? (Playing tennis makes Mr. Cruz healthy.)
             • What is Mrs. Cruz hobby that improves her vocabulary? ( Mrs.Cruz’s hobby,
                 reading, improves her vocabulary.)
             • What is Franz’ favorite hobby? (Franz’ favorite hobby is biking around the
                 village.)

             • What does Lolo Genie enjoy doing? (Lolo genie enjoys listening to the radio.)

• What does Lola Amy love doing? (Lola Amy loves gardening.)

           3. Analysis

Study the underlined phrase in each sentence.
Give the first word for each underlined phrase.
(playing, reading, biking, listening, watching, gardening)
How do these words end? (They end with –ing.)
These phrases are names of activities. Hence, these words with -ing are nouns.
Identify the verb in each sentence. Where is each underlined phrase placed in the
sentence? (It generally comes before or after the verb).

    D. Generalization

A gerund is a verb form ending in –ing and used as a noun. Like an ordinary
single-word noun, it may be used as a:

Subjects-Tell us whom or what a sentence is about.

Direct Objects-receive the action of certain action verbs called "transitive active
             verbs."

Indirect Objects- receive the direct object.

Predicate Nominative or subjective complements- come after linking verbs. They
rename the subject of the sentence.

Objects of the Preposition- are nouns that follow a preposition. They are a necessary
             part of prepositional phrases.

Appositives- are nouns (sometimes modified by an adjective) that follows another
noun (in commas) and which describes that noun.

A gerund phrase consists of a gerund together with its modifiers. It may be modified
by adjectives and adverbs or by phrases and by clauses.

A gerund or a gerund phrase may come before or after the verb in a sentence.

    E. Post Activity

     1. Application

gerund's function in the sentence as subject, direct object, subjective
complement, object of preposition, or appositive.

Note: If the gerund is part of a gerund phrase, include the whole phrase in your
           answer.

  • 1. Demonstration Lesson Plan in Grammar English III I. Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students are expected to: • Use gerunds and gerund phrases accordingly • Construct sentences from a given slide show • Identify worth doing recreational activities II. Subject Matter A. Topic: Gerunds and Its Uses B. References: -Effective Drills in English Grammar by:Teresita R. Briones (pp.91-93) - http://www.towson.edu/ows/verbals.html#Gerunds C. Material: Power Point Presentation III. Procedure A. Daily Routine 1. Prayer 2. Checking of Attendance B. Motivation Six students are asked to pick any numbers from one to six one at a time. Each number has corresponding words. Student will act the chosen word then the rest of the class will guess the student’s action that ends in –ing. Actions to be performed by the students: 1- planting 2- washing 3- typing 4- singing 5- writing 6- reading Then ask the students what they have noticed. Review of present participle and show the differences of gerund. C. Development of Lesson 1. Elicitation When a verb ends in -ing, it may be a gerund or a present participle. It is important to understand that they are not the same. What's the difference? When we use a verb in -ing form more like a noun, it is usually a gerund: Ex. Singing is fun. When we use a verb in -ing form more like a verb or an adjective, it is usually a present participle. Ex. Anthony is singing. I have a boring teacher. What are Gerunds? How do they function? Gerunds are verbal forms ending in -ing that functions as a noun. Like an ordinary single-word noun, a gerund may be used as a 1|Page Page 1 of 6

  • 3. APPOSITIVE 2. Presentation Teacher presents a huge picture showing the hobbies or recreational activities of each member of a family. Observe the activities that each member is doing. How do you call these activities? (hobbies/recreational activities) (Teacher writes on the board the students’ answers for the given questions.) • What activity makes Mr. Cruz healthy? (Playing tennis makes Mr. Cruz healthy.) • What is Mrs. Cruz hobby that improves her vocabulary? ( Mrs.Cruz’s hobby, reading, improves her vocabulary.) • What is Franz’ favorite hobby? (Franz’ favorite hobby is biking around the village.) • What is Erlie’s past time? (Erlie’s past time is watching TV programs.) • What does Lolo Genie enjoy doing? (Lolo genie enjoys listening to the radio.) 3|Page Page 3 of 6
  • 4. What does Lola Amy love doing? (Lola Amy loves gardening.) 3. Analysis Study the underlined phrase in each sentence. Give the first word for each underlined phrase. (playing, reading, biking, listening, watching, gardening) How do these words end? (They end with –ing.) These phrases are names of activities. Hence, these words with -ing are nouns. Identify the verb in each sentence. Where is each underlined phrase placed in the sentence? (It generally comes before or after the verb). D. Generalization A gerund is a verb form ending in –ing and used as a noun. Like an ordinary single-word noun, it may be used as a: Subjects-Tell us whom or what a sentence is about. Direct Objects-receive the action of certain action verbs called "transitive active verbs." Indirect Objects- receive the direct object. Predicate Nominative or subjective complements- come after linking verbs. They rename the subject of the sentence. Objects of the Preposition- are nouns that follow a preposition. They are a necessary part of prepositional phrases. Appositives- are nouns (sometimes modified by an adjective) that follows another noun (in commas) and which describes that noun. A gerund phrase consists of a gerund together with its modifiers. It may be modified by adjectives and adverbs or by phrases and by clauses. A gerund or a gerund phrase may come before or after the verb in a sentence. E. Post Activity 1. Application Directions: Locate the gerund (gerund phrase) in each sentence. Then identify the gerund's function in the sentence as subject, direct object, subjective complement, object of preposition, or appositive. Note: If the gerund is part of a gerund phrase, include the whole phrase in your answer. 1.
