Life Lessons From John

American author John Steinbeck
is best known for his works set
during the Great Depression, with
a laser-sharp focus on migrant
workers and their plight. It was a
highly stressful and challenging
time, and readers can learn a
lesson or two on life and survival
from Steinbeck’s ction. Here’s
the take of The Culture Trip on
the matter.

The Great Depression is a whole
period of decline and want,
beginning in August 1929 with
rapid economic decline and the
stock market crash that followed
in October. People lost homes
and jobs, many businesses closed
down and saw crashing pro ts,
and the Midwest saw a terrible
drought that made things worse.
Dislocation
Steinbeck’s celebrated novels The
Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and
Men reference the “Dust Bowl,”
referring to the time and place
where drought and over-farming
wrought havoc on the Midwest.
It’s a harsh taste of displacement
from natural disaster and lands
and homes getting repossessed
by bank. People do everything
necessary to survive, and it’s a
show of strength and the spirit of
constantly trying to make it.
Clash of cultures
Migrant workers moving to
California realize things aren’t
easier, as they were deemed
outsiders and fear of the
unknown took over. It’s stress at
its highest level, with weariness
taking over people due to their
dire circumstances.

When In Cancun: Things To Visit
And Explore

Of course, Cancun will
always be the beach
paradise that it is, and the
vibrant vibe and youthful
energy of its night scene is
a veritable selling point.
But there are a lot of other
things to explore in Cancun
and its surrounding islands
and locations. From
extreme activities to
cultural events and spots,
Cancun can surprise one as
if it’s the first time all over
again.

One can begin by gaining
more knowledge about the
Mayan culture. The
Chichen Itza is one of the
most famous archeological
sites all over the world.
Mayan ruins have been
popular tourist spots in
Mexico. The focal point is
occupied by the distinctive
geometrical sophistication
of El Castillo which was
once a religious temple.
The Tulum Ruins is another
great site that could supply
one with a rich historical
perspective. The night
could end with Xcaret Park
which offers a variety of
cultural shows teaching
about Mayan history.

A strong theme for Cancun
visitors to explore is
ecology. Eco-consciousness
is the main aim of Museo
Subacuatico de Arte, an
underwater museum with
varying depths for scuba
diving and snorkeling. Over
500 life-size sculptures can
be found here, a place that

provided an alternative
sanctuary for the
proliferation of marine life.
Isla Mujeres’ turtle
sanctuary is another spot
worth one’s time.
If one is feeling more
adventurous and friendly
than usual, probably after
having a few sips in the
Tequila Herradura Museum
where it’s all about the
tequila history and fun,
downtown Cancun can be
an inviting place to be.
Taking time off from the
Hotel Zone, visitors might
want to mingle with the
locals and experience the
culture from the
inhabitants themselves.

Michael Jordan, the point guard

Last season, the NBA saw a
thrilling ght for the Most
Valuable Player award between
two stellar players: Russell
Westbrook, who won, and James
Harden.
Westbrook became known as Mr.
Triple Double after averaging
double digits in points, rebounds,
and assists. Harden, who played
shooting guard for his entire
career before last season,
transitioned into the point guard

role, which helped his team
register one of the best o enses
in league history.
However, 28 years ago, someone
did exactly what these two young
guns did, and his name is Michael
Jordan.
On March 11, 1989, with about a
month left to play in the season,
Jordan and the Chicago Bulls
were in trouble after being on
track to nish with a worse record
than they had the prior year.
Realizing that some changes are
needed, Jordan held a meeting
with head coach Doug Collins,
resulting in a decision to let His
Airness handle the ball more
often and initiate plays as the
team’s point guard.
What ensued was probably the
best stretch of Jordan’s storied
career. Over the remaining 24
games, he averaged 30.4 points,
9.2 rebounds, and 10.7 assists,
recording seven consecutive
triple doubles in the process (14
overall).
While the adjustment did not
translate to a better winning
percentage during that time,
Jordan was able to bring out the
best in his teammates, the impact
of which they would feel two
years later when they won the
rst of their six championships.

The Two Unforgettable

Unless you hate him and what he
did to your team back in the 90s,
odds are you’re with the majority
of the basketball world who
believe that Michael Jordan is the
G.O.A.T. He has achieved what
very few have accomplished in
their lifetimes, and more.
Whereas Magic Johnson and Larry
Bird before him saved the game
of basketball, Jordan changed it
forever. Here are two of his most

unforgettable performances on
the court.

69 points
This was his greatest game in
terms of statistics. Beating the
Cleveland Cavaliers who were the
whipping boys of the Chicago
Bulls for over two decades, MJ
scored 69 points, grabbed 18
rebounds, dished out six assists,
stole the ball four times, and had
one block. It was notable for two
reasons: it was a close game, and
much more di cult to go on a
scoring barrage, and he shot an
astounding 62 percent from the
eld.
The Flu Game
In MJ’s gutsiest (no pun intended)
performance ever, he played with
intense pain due to a stomach u.
He had to be hydrated every so
often just so he could stand up.
Players don’t usually suit up if this
is the case, but it was the 1997
NBA Finals, and the series was
tied two games apiece. With the
match, the championship, and his

life on the line, MJ de ed logic by
scoring 38 points, 15 in the fourth
quarter, and the game-winning
shot, while only resting a total of
4 minutes. That is greatness.

MJ vs LBJ: GOAT Talk
posted Jul 5, 2017, 10:46 PM by Richard
Ohlhaber [ updated Jul 5, 2017, 10:57 PM
]
So, Lebron James has nally
passed Michael Jordan on the all-
time post-season scoring list.
James is number one now, and
his fans once again clamor for his
stake at being the GOAT. Like I
said, “his fans”. The rest of the
world however, or at least a
majority of it, still consider MJ to
be the GOAT.
11. 3/23/2018 Blog - Richard Ohlhaber
https://sites.google.com/site/richardohlhaber01/blog 11/22
But is it really impossible to
believe that LBJ can one day pass
MJ, and be crowned GOAT? The
answer is a (debatable) YES.
Michael Jordan’s greatness
emerged at a time when Magic
Johnson and Larry Bird were
winding down as players.
Although the league had other
great stars in the 90s, they would
almost always lose to Jordan and
the Bulls. The Bulls never lost in a
championship series. MJ was a
winner, and not just a stat- ller.
Lebron James, on the other hand,
could do everything. He’s a more
complete player, skill-wise and
physique-wise. James has
reached the NBA Finals for seven
consecutive years, a feat that not
even MJ achieved. However,
James did lose to his peers in the
NBA nals. In fact, his record is 3-
4, while MJ’s is a stellar 6-0.

theurbantwist.com
The most telling stat in deciding
the GOAT however, is as it has
always been. Since GOAT status is
subjective, it simply means it’s a
popularity contest. If that’s the
case, then yes, it’s pretty
impossible to beat MJ.

The Basic Elements In
Developing a Consistent Golf
Swing
posted May 9, 2017, 6:23 AM by Richard
Ohlhaber [ updated May 9, 2017, 6:27
AM ]
Golf is a most interesting sport,
which is patronized for its
engaging challenge on the eld,
as well as its e ectiveness in
developing networks with
signi cant people. In order to
have what it takes to become a
decent golfer, one must rst
develop a consistent golf swing.
Here are few tips.
13. 3/23/2018 Blog - Richard Ohlhaber
https://sites.google.com/site/richardohlhaber01/blog 13/22
First, you must learn to plant your
feet on the ground. This is crucial
because the only leverage you’ll
be getting on the green is going
to be a result of how rmly your
feet are planted. There’s a reason
golf shoes come with small studs.
Good anchorage is what provides
what you need for a powerful
swing.
One error that gol ng beginners
make is the lack of commitment
to the swing from start to nish.
A swing should be decisive. It
cannot be divided into segments,
as a swing is an all-or-nothing
kind of move. From the moment
you start your swing, you should
do it with the con dence to nish.
Hesitation in the middle will foil
your attempt.
Most coaches will always
emphasize that a swing needs to
come with a follow through. It
might sound illogical to do this,
especially when the follow
through is often seen as a motion
that hardly in uences the ball
that is already on its way to its
intended target. However, the
follow through is essential in
developing the muscle memory

https://sites.google.com/site/richardohlhaber01/blog 14/22
that’s needed to make your golf
swing consistent.

With a competent swing, you can
be a force to be reckoned with on
the golf course soon enough.

the following:
Ernie Banks
No list of “Best Chicago Cubs of
all time” will ever be complete
without “Mr. Cub” himself.
Though there were other hitters
better than him to have played
for the Cubs, not one among
them can say that he played his
entire career for the team, which
was what Ernie Banks did. From
1953 to 1971 – a total of 19
seasons – Banks amassed 512
career home runs for Chicago
Cubs, taking home the MVP
award in 1958 and 1959.

Ryne Sandberg
The legend of Sandberg started in
1984, when he earned the MVP
award and led the Cubs to its rst
postseason appearance in nearly
four decades. He even almost
brought the team to the World
Series but fell one game short
against the San Diego Padres in
the National League
Championship Series. Since then,
the Ryno continued to dominate
in both batting and elding until
his abrupt retirement in 1994.

Who Was The Best Michael
Jordan?

Ever since Michael Jordan
entered the NBA, basketball
has never been the same. Not
only did he electrify audiences
with his high-flying moves, he
also revolutionized how the
world saw the game. All of a
sudden, marketing exploded,
with dozens of brands being
elevated because of this one
superstar. But there is no
denying that he is indeed the
greatest of all time. The
debate, however, reposes on
the question who was the
better Michael Jordan? Was it

the dominant Jordan of the 80s
whose athleticism and scoring
prowess was incomparable? Or
was it the leader of the Bulls
dynasty in the 90s?
The Michael Jordan of the 80s
was a scoring machine in every
sense of the word. He would
take on several defenders at a
time and still score. He was
fast and out-leapt almost
everyone he faced. 80s Jordan
scored at will, and was an
efficient slasher to the hoop.
Every kid wished to be like
him. He was flamboyant, and
was a huge superstar early on.
90s Jordan was a bit slower,
didn’t jump as high, and didn’t
score as much as 80s Jordan.
But 90s Jordan was more
mature. He knew the game
inside out, and knew what it
took to win. 90s Jordan
developed his mid-range
jumper and his defense. He
became a more well-rounded,
complete player, arguably the
greatest team leader in NBA
history (probably alongside the
greats, Bill Russell, Magic
Johnson, and Larry Bird), and

Take The Cannoli: The De ning

From its start as one of the
de ning movies of the New
Hollywood era, the Godfather has
left a cultural impact few other
movies can claim. Besides being
the de nitive gangster movie, the
lm also became a cultural icon,
oft referenced and quoted.
Moreover, in an entertainingly
recursive way, the lm in uenced
the activities and behaviors of
actual gangsters.

One book, “The godfather e ect,”
explored the mark the lm has
left on the Italian American
identity. Its author, Tom
Santoprieto, describes how the
narrative of the young Vito
Corleone inspired him to look at
his own family's origins as Italian
immigrants in a di erent way,
and explores the reasons behind
the prominence of Italian

Corleone and his kin. In the past,
FBI agents repeatedly found
copies of the lm in raids of
known gangster's houses.
Noticeably, they also found out
that these mobsters actually
started talking like the characters
from the movie, which provided
no end of entertainment for
wiretapping police agents.
The most obvious e ect was on
the public perception of
gangsters. Although far from
glamorizing real gangsters (with
Don Vito's desire to turn
legitimate being the key point of
the narrative), the movies did
heavily in uence how they were
subsequently depicted. Today, no
gangster-oriented lm or
television series would be without
subtle (and sometimes
obligatory) shout-outs to the
“Godfather.”
