22. Why Wait? “ ...I was checking off my shopping list as I slowly pushed my grocery cart, slightly leaning against it, trying so hard to hide the limp that had now become so apparent. Suddenly I realized there was an item I had missed. Oh NO! It was two aisles over, an aisle that I already had walked past. I paused, leaning more against my cart, hoping to take some of the weight and pain away from my deteriorating left hip. I thought long and hard, do I really need that item? Can I do without it? Was it worth walking back TWO long painful aisles to get to that item? I decided no, it was not worth it, even though I really wanted that item, the cost of that item now equated to the amount of pain it would take to obtain it. The thought of that excruciating hip pain brought tears to my eyes, tears that I slowly and secretly wiped away... --Vicky Marlow, Founder of Surface Hippy Website I think we have all been blessed with this wonderful new procedure and we should all be very thankful and try to help as many people as we can who need this type of surgery, get it, and with a good doctor. --Karen McNulty – Dancer 17

“My kids were frustrated that their father, who was playing professionally just a couple of years ago, could no longer even kick the soccer ball with them. My wife had to deal with my lack of sleep issues and how that affected my overall attitude. My quality of life had deteriorated to the point where I was just trying to get from point A to point B with as little discomfort as possible.“My surgeon explained to me that because of my age, my lifestyle, my bone density and the fact that I am male, I was an ideal candidate. The results were extremely impressive! The final factor for me was that I really liked the idea of preserving the neck of my femur because no matter what I chose, there is a chance that I will need another procedure done 15-20 years down the line. It made sense to me that the femur would be stronger at that point if it had not been violated previously.“In the 6+ months since I had the BIRMINGHAM HIP, I have my life back! I am able to play with my kids, play golf and sleep again. Most importantly, my wife says I am happy again. She feels like she has her husband back and our four kids have their dad back!”
To evaluate the impact of operative volume on hip resurfacing outcomes, Andrew J. Shimmin, MBBS, FAOrthA, and colleagues used the Australian Joint Registry to identify nearly 9,000 hip resurfacings performed at 196 hospitals between September 1999 and December 2006......They then compared the cumulative rate of revision at 4 years among the hospital groups. At 4 years, the investigators discovered a 6% revision rate for centers performing fewer than 25 cases, a 5.6% rate for those performing 25-49 cases, a 4.7% rate for hospitals doing 50-99 cases, and a 2.7% revision rate for those performing more than 100 cases.
