THUMBELINA
Content Summary
Act 1
Scene 1
In the Library
A famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen is sitting in the library surrounded by
children and telling them about the world which opens for you when you are reading books.
Children want to act out a fairy-tale together and play a part in it. The writer agrees to tell them a
fairy-tale about a tiny girl Thumbelina.
Scene 2
The Fairy’s House
A Fairy can more than others, she can even do magic. One day a woman came to her house to
see if she could help to have a child. The fairy took pity on the woman and gave her a seed to
plant. When it blossoms there will be a tiny girl inside. But the Fairy warned the woman that her
dreams would come true only if she wishes it very much.
Scene 3
Mother’s Garden
Mother’s garden is full of sun, floral scents and wonderful colours. But Mother’s most beautiful
flower is her daughter Thumbelina who is grows and recieves Mother’s love. However,
Thumbelina become more and more curious as she is growing. What is there beyond the
garden’s gates? She wants to explore the world. Mother doesn’t want to understand the girl. One
day Swallow landed in the garden and in a song tells the dwellers of the garden about its long-
distance journeys full of adventures. Thumbelina is very excited with Swallow’s song. Swallow
flew off but Thumbelina hurried after the bird, leaving her Mother’s garden
Act 2
Scene 5
Above the ground
Thumbelina decided to stay with her Mother, but invisible ties will connect her with Swallow for
all her life, because the girl’s heart got to know love.
Scene 2
The Fairy’s House
Fairy Song
Fairy
To add some magic every day
Is easy, yet it’s not enough
And everything will be in vain
Without the touch of love
Every little man
Who comes on the Earth
Carries a peace of sun
From the day of his birth
So each of us should learn one day
To conjure up and see the stars
Distinguish good from bad
And never hide from love.
Mother’s Prayer
Mother
Oh! Fairy! You can everything
You are so wise and kind
But all I want is –
A small kid
That’s what on my mind.
I want so much
To swing the cradle
Caress and cuddle
My little darling.
Fairy
Your girl can emerge from the flower,
It will be hiden inside.
You girl is a gift from the sun,
Hiden in the sunlight.
Mother
Oh! Fairy! You can everything
You are so wise and kind
But all I want is –
A daughter
I could care about.
I want so much
To swing the cradle
Caress and cuddle
My little darling.
Fairy
At night I will cast for you
Take the seed and plant it
When it blossoms
You dream will come true
If you want it so much
Fairy
You only wish, you just desire,
Let magic power burn like fire
And if your dream is very strong
A Flower child will be born
Children
And let life blossom like a flower
And reaches for the sun
A Flower kid from flower bud
Inhales the smell of dawn.
You’ve got a name, and also flower
Your star’s up there in the sky
You have a lot of days and nights
But what is more – a loving mother.
Everybody
You only wish, you just desire,
You only wish, you just desire.
Scene 3
Mother’s Garden
Thumbeline
Grasshoppers jump high
Little violets bloom
In tender rose petals
Like a bee I can hide.
How big is a windowsill!
I open the window wide…
How beautiful is the world!
Flowers are in the sight!
My dreams are like birds
High in the blue sky,
My thoughts are like butterflies
Over the summer meadow.
The window opens
Thumbeline
The window opens, mom,
The meadow in full bloom
I want to jump, to play,
Throw summersaults and run!
Mother
The window opens, but do not rush
The wind is blowing very near
The wind will break the flowers, my dear.
Thumbeline
Mom, the window opens
And birds are singing
I want to join them
Oh, let me go outside.
Mother
The window opens and thunder’s son
throws lightening sharp and fearsome
swallows fly low to the ground, my child.
Thumbeline
The window opens, mom -
the world is just awesome!
Oh, let me go outside!
Mother
In our house and garden
You are always safe
On any path you go
With every flower play
Swallow’s Song
Swallow
Like wind, like snow or blizzard
I never settle down and calm
My flight, my way is like a cape
For this world and heaven.
In Paris, Athens or Rome
Looking down from the clouds
I see the ocean stretches out
And the white iceberg floats
To see it, to know it
is never too much
While you are flying –
you live and grow.
What is good or bad – how to define?
It’s clear when you’re flying high.
There is a freedom like a flight
Like sailing on a starry night.
Scene 5
Above the ground
Happy Land
Mother
The dew drops on the leaves –
Like early morning shower
Soon will come the first sun rays
Which will open the flower
Fairy
Like a little golden seed
Hidden from view
A tiny girl or boy inside
Will drink the drops of dew
Everybody
This land is just for us
This land alone
The happy land
Where I found home.
This land is just for us
This happy land
The meadows and the sky
And birds which fly so high.
Thumbeline
Just like little birds
Flower kids can fly.
We can give you the wings
If you strive for the sky
Hans Christian Andersen
All our dreams and thoughts,
Which only heart can see,
May God let them fly
And wings will never break.
