What are you being asked to do in 4.4.2 You will write an outline for an essay on this topic And then write a paragraph about your outline and plan To do this, You need to look at your thesis again for the Cause/Effect Essay Prompt:  Discuss the effects of technology on everyday life.
4.4.2-Open a word document and  1. title it Your Name's Technology Effect Outline (Ex: Jasper's Effect Outline)  2.   Type your completed thesis at the top of your page.  The first thing that you need to do is to write a thesis sentence; this is the sentence that tells me what your paper will be about. I have written a sample for you. Check it out below. There is an easy formula for it.  Effect 1 and Effect 2 are just two of the effects of technology on every day life. (Please feel free to use this.)  Remember your thesis is a complete sentence.  My sample thesis: Improved communication and better educational opportunities are just two of the effects of technology on everyday life.
More on that thesis: You do not have to go with my thesis and my areas of discussion? How does technology affect your everyday life? Remember you will write an essay on this topic so make sure that you like your areas of discussion Look at the next slide for more ideas.
Other possible ideas you can write about in your essay” 1.  technology can improve our health (with the Wii fit you can get exercise and lose weight 2.  On the other hand technology can affect us by making us unhealthy by making us couch potatoes 3.  Technology can help us to keep in touch with others. 4. Technology can make life easier with all the modern conveniences 5.  Technology can cause us to procrastinate since you get caught up with it and lose track of time. Above are just a few more ideas for how technology affects you. As I continue I will continue with the assignment using my thesis so that I can model what you are to do.
Once you get your thesis, you need to complete your outline. My thesis: Improved communication and better educational opportunities are just two of the effects of technology on everyday life.  4.   List the examples you plan to use to support your thesis in this order  o        Effect 1 of technology on everyday life  o        Improved communication Cell phone – I am always in touch with family/students/friends  	This will be paragraph 2 – the first body paragraph  o        Effect 2 of technology on everyday life.  Improved Educational opportunities – Virtual Public High School, Odysseyware on the computer, more enjoyable lessons with music, smart boards and web 2.0 tools readily available.	  This will be paragraph 3 – the 2nd body paragraph    5.   Type a four-eight (4-8) sentence paragraph that explains your outline  o        Use BET – Your best writing. o        Review what you wrote; make changes if necessary  So explain in more detail in 4 to 8 sentences what you plan to write about
Now feel free to use my thesis and layout for this essay: But you have to have your own original ideas for support instead of mine. When you finish your thesis, outline, and paragraph submit your 4.4.2 assignment. And then we will continue by thinking about 4.6 so move to the next slide.
In 4.6 you will write the actual essay using the thesis and outline that you have developed. So the hard work is already done. So the thesis and outline that we have developed in 4.4.2 is for a 4 paragraph essay. You will have an introductory paragraph. Two body paragraphs, each explaining 1 way that technology affects your everyday life. And finally a short, concluding paragraph.
Cont. with 4.6-Introductory paragraph So your introductory paragraph is about 3 sentences. Why don’t you start with a question? How does technology affect your everyday life? And then add a sentence to explain why it is important to know about technology? I would say something about living in such a technological society, you need to always keep this in mind. And the 3rd sentence would be your thesis sentence.
4.6 – 2nd paragraph of essay which will be your first body paragraph You need to begin with a topic sentence. To do this you need to know the area of discussion for this paragraph. The formula for this topic sentence is the key words and the area of discussion. Using the thesis that I wrote, the topic sentence would be Technology has made huge improvements in our ability to communicate with others
4.6-2nd paragraph of essay – 1st body paragraph continued Technology has made huge improvements in our ability to communicate with others. Really I am never not able to be in touch with someone unless my cell phone battery is dead. Cell phones have made it so easy to stay in touch with my family and friends. When my father was in a serious car accident…. As I continue writing I would explain this example using vivid details, and then I would add a concluding sentence saying that Technology kept me in touch with my family during a crisis.
And then you would begin your 3rd paragraph which is your 2ndbody paragraph According to the thesis that I wrote this paragraph will be about technology opening doors in education. So you will write a topic sentence just like you did in the last paragraph. And you need to give a good example along with vivid details. I think you could write about NCVPS giving you a 2nd chance to pass English and all of the ways that we allow you to show us what you have learned: blogs, wikis, toondoos, glogsters, powerpoints.
After you write the 3rd paragraph, it is time to write the concluding paragraph: You should begin by restating the thesis of your essay. And then you need to have a call to action. Maybe go back to the concept that we need to be looking at the ways technology affects us often since we continue to be more exposed to technology.
4.6 the essay So when you finish your essay, you will save it. Then go back and review it one more time. Have you written in formal English grammar? This means that you should not use texting language. Did you write in complete sentences? Did you use capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and the proper end punctuation? Does your essay reflect your best effort?
4.6 Finally When you can say yes to all of the questions in the previous slide, you should save it again. And submit your 4.6 post assessment. Congratulations!

Technology can make life easier with all the modern conveniences 5. Technology can cause us to procrastinate since you get caught up with it and lose track of time. Above are just a few more ideas for how technology affects you. As I continue I will continue with the assignment using my thesis so that I can model what you are to do.
  • 6. Once you get your thesis, you need to complete your outline. My thesis: Improved communication and better educational opportunities are just two of the effects of technology on everyday life. 4.   List the examples you plan to use to support your thesis in this order o        Effect 1 of technology on everyday life o        Improved communication Cell phone – I am always in touch with family/students/friends This will be paragraph 2 – the first body paragraph o        Effect 2 of technology on everyday life.   • 7. Now feel free to use my thesis and layout for this essay: But you have to have your own original ideas for support instead of mine. When you finish your thesis, outline, and paragraph submit your 4.4.2 assignment. And then we will continue by thinking about 4.6 so move to the next slide.
  • 8. In 4.6 you will write the actual essay using the thesis and outline that you have developed. So the hard work is already done. So the thesis and outline that we have developed in 4.4.2 is for a 4 paragraph essay. You will have an introductory paragraph. Two body paragraphs, each explaining 1 way that technology affects your everyday life. And finally a short, concluding paragraph.
  • 9. Cont. with 4.6-Introductory paragraph So your introductory paragraph is about 3 sentences. Why don’t you start with a question? How does technology affect your everyday life? And then add a sentence to explain why it is important to know about technology? I would say something about living in such a technological society, you need to always keep this in mind. And the 3rd sentence would be your thesis sentence.
  • 10. 4.6 – 2nd paragraph of essay which will be your first body paragraph You need to begin with a topic sentence. To do this you need to know the area of discussion for this paragraph. The formula for this topic sentence is the key words and the area of discussion. Using the thesis that I wrote, the topic sentence would be Technology has made huge improvements in our ability to communicate with others
  • 11. 4.6-2nd paragraph of essay – 1st body paragraph continued Technology has made huge improvements in our ability to communicate with others. Really I am never not able to be in touch with someone unless my cell phone battery is dead. Cell phones have made it so easy to stay in touch with my family and friends. When my father was in a serious car accident…. As I continue writing I would explain this example using vivid details, and then I would add a concluding sentence saying that Technology kept me in touch with my family during a crisis.
  • 12. And then you would begin your 3rd paragraph which is your 2ndbody paragraph According to the thesis that I wrote this paragraph will be about technology opening doors in education. So you will write a topic sentence just like you did in the last paragraph. And you need to give a good example along with vivid details. I think you could write about NCVPS giving you a 2nd chance to pass English and all of the ways that we allow you to show us what you have learned: blogs, wikis, toondoos, glogsters, powerpoints.
  • 13. After you write the 3rd paragraph, it is time to write the concluding paragraph: You should begin by restating the thesis of your essay. And then you need to have a call to action. Maybe go back to the concept that we need to be looking at the ways technology affects us often since we continue to be more exposed to technology.
  • 14. 4.6 the essay So when you finish your essay, you will save it. Then go back and review it one more time. Have you written in formal English grammar? This means that you should not use texting language. Did you write in complete sentences? Did you use capital letters at the beginning of each sentence and the proper end punctuation? Does your essay reflect your best effort?
  • 15. 4.6 Finally When you can say yes to all of the questions in the previous slide, you should save it again. And submit your 4.6 post assessment. Congratulations!
